I think game stop hate me these days because when I buy 2nd hand PlayStation 2 games there I mix n match the case disc and manual so I get the best copy possible.. Like fuck am I gonna pay for a good case and fucked disc I want my moneys worth!

Like I Saw Resident Evil Code Veronica X... thought ah aint got that one and then remembered the incident with Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec (Great box... No manual and Scratched to hell Disc) so I whipped open the Code Veronica box low and behold Nice Condition Manual as the box was I look at the disc... looked like someone melted it slightly with a lighter.... so i opened the box of the only other copy and checked that disc (box had water damage and the manual was well shredded) and had a mint condition disc! so i was like right ill have that disc and put it in the good case!

Same goes for Zone of the Enders, same thing!

I could see in the corner of my eye the store guy watching me getting pissed off but fuck em im paying my cash i want every bit of my moneys worth!

do you guys do that too? not just with PS2 but with any Console or PC Games?

I've done it before-- and I used to work at Gamestop, so I would do my best to help the nicer customers find a legit case with the booklet intact. It's a good idea to inspect used merchandise before you buy it if possible regardless.

Not with PC games though, 'cause I wouldn't buy a used PC game :p

Never thought of that. I usually get good cases and discs. Must be lucky or something.

Nice avatar....*nosebleed*

On-topic: I've had times when i wish I did something like that. It was at a second hand store rather than a gamestop but the same applys.

I'm reminded of the time a visitor came to my house with a copy of Halo 3 with the intention of playing it with me. "I already have it." I say with a laugh. "Let's go play." then later I found he had replaced my Halo 3 box with his. Leaving me with a mostly broken box and a disk that can't play half the maps.

Oh did I get mad, skipping a short violent story I'll summarize with this: I got my game back.

You may be annoying some of the employees, but Gamestop itself probably loves you to death. When you buy used games, no matter how obnoxious you are about it, they get to resell old stuff to you at an enormous profit margin without having to pay the developers a cent. Just saying.

Hmmm, can't say i've had that problem, I've found when i've traded games in/got traded in games theirs a sort of quality issue where if it looks fucked they don't accept it. Maybe it's just a gamestation thing, or just something about the stores I go to in my area.

What the hell kind of Gamestop puts cases on the shelf WITH THE DISCS IN THEM? That just screams "Steal this, please!"

And who cares if you do do that? If you're actually buying it, it's your prerogative to make sure you get your money's worth. I don't see how you're being "Gamestops's worst nightmare."

You come to my store, I'll fucking give you the best copy I have; you don't even have to ask. You just better hope I have more than one.

You want to know Gamestop's ACTUAL worst nightmare? It's the guy with a huge sack of old-as-fuck games to trade in who's got a preternatural knack for showing up when it's already busy, asking asinine question after asinine question, who then picks out a bunch more ORIGINAL XBOX games - half oh which we probably don't actually have - and demands to check the quality of each disc AS IF WE HAD A BUNCH OF EACH.

Do you do that? If not, you're so very, very far from a worst nightmare.

Because having it sit on the shelf to later need to be re-alphabetized, inventoried and then eventually categorized and shipped off because no one hardly buys PS2 games it is somehow less of a hassle then someone mixing and matching?

I hate to spoil your dreams of being Retailer Cthulhu, but you are actually doing him a favor despite the harsh glares he might be giving you.

As someone who has worked a lot of retail, employees usually don't mind carrying out special requests like this as long as you're polite about it.

It doesn't work that way in my game stores, but i try to get the best copy if i can.

I'll spend 20 minutes deciding which has the best case, only to have the guy over the counter swap it for one plastered in half-torn stickers.

Yeah my local gamestops keep the discs behind the counter. But ill swap case and manual for best possible fit.

I also ask to see the bottom of the disc before they sell it to me. At first most employees in the area where reluctant to do so. Mostly because half the disks i try to buy are scratched to hell and they lose my business. However some regulars saw me ask and they started doing it too. Then non-regulars. And now its gotten to the point where our gamestops either won't take scratched disks or will only give you pennies for them. This is a victory in my opinion.

Valid points but i know that 2 of the staff are rather assholes, like twice now ive walked in there and Seen USA Copies of games on both NGC and PS2... now im in Europe so its almost not gonna sell in a tiny ass town that im in so i ask em (as i have my ps2 slim now modded for imports gotta love Jap only releases xD and a Freeloader for Gamecube) that these are usa copies of the games (showing them the NTSC) and offering to take it off there hands for half the face value (still alot more than what they paid to get it in) and they laugh in my face and put em back on the shelf... as far as i can remember that copy of Zelda Twilight Princess for NGC and Devil May Cry 3 on PS2 is still there 6 months later xD

I can't do that... cuz in England to stop theft they put the boxes out on the shelves and have the discs behind the desk...

But they clean the disc for free if it's really scratched. So it's all good in the end :)

Except once you're done with the game, you can't return it if you download it.

Yeah your their perfect customer, and hey I do this too. Once a employee actually offered to help me do this.

This is the test I do to determine which Gamestops are the good ones. The one in the local mall is not a good one but a bad one run by dicks. I picked up Spawn Armageddon (no original box, no manual, disc looked a bit scuffed. Played well though), Pokemon Colosseum and, Super Smash Brothers Melee (all on gamecube). I just wanted a disc that would work and painstakingly inspected every copy of every disc they had. I picked the three that looked best, showed the manager (only guy working there) the discs and their condition, went home and quickly discovered that only Spawn worked. Took the other two games back the next day but the computers were down (nobody's fault) hour later I go back and go for the refund. Same manager is there but I am being helped by a different clerk. I go for the store credit because that's how I roll (also wanted preorders) Clerk shows managers discs after I say I want a refund. Manager says "I didn't sell 'em to him like that but give him the refund anyway." Dick manager. Bad Store. survey says 0 and DM got annoyed e-mail.

Similar thing happened at the more local gamestop. I picked up SSBM (heh...BM) which didn't work. Took it back same day but the manager wouldn't sell me any others because the disc I got was the best looking. I looked, I agreed. Annoyed by the continued lack of Smash Brothers but know it was for the greater good. Good Store.

I agree though. You're paying money for a service they provide. They have no right to complain. If it's really that much of an inconvenience to them they wouldn't offer up the used games service at all.

The convenience of Steam combined with the ridiculous deals they're always running makes it really, really dangerous. It takes a lot of effort to control myself with all the impulse buys.
