Honestly, I'm not sure how useful they are. I guess their real use is to quickly discover new places without engaging in combat. Just quickly run from one end to the other.
I have found a much more interesting use for them.
They can carry you and you can fasttravel without any weight-limit.
So once I got overburdened because I felt in love with all that junk in a Dwemer ruin. I couldn't fast travel (because overburdened) but then I saddled up. Don't ask me how! With 4x maximum weight capacity it probably involves magic. A LOT OF MAGIC. But one the horse, I could fast travel again...
I'll have to give that a try. I usually end up making 2-3 runs back to my hub house whenever I and my pack mule (Lydia) are full. But if this works, that I can do is as I reach full burden go back to the front of the dungeon and find a nice place (some container) put everything in ther and when I'm finally done with the dungeon grab everything get on my horse and head home. It could save me a bunch of fast travels.

If you own a horse somehow, it follows you everywhere. If you don't know why, maybe it's a bug.

Keep it. Horses don't give a fuck about anything.

I met a horse today. Rode it for a bit then went to get off it while half on a rock, in quite the awkward position. Needless to say, the horse literally shot up in the air and landed about 100 metres away... It didn't survive the fall.

No seriously. The damn horse LITERALLY SHOT UP INTO THE FUCKING AIR and landed about 100 metres away. Like a catapult. I'm unfortunitely not joking. Cruel as it may sound, I couldn't help but giggle. Best glitch I've seen so far. Even better than the dragon I seen yesterday that crash landed then had a spaz across the ground for about 50 metres.

Wow, that sounds almost as epic as this.

Yes, it's quite a common problem with horse programming in Skyrim. See, this particular type of horse is whack with poo brain.

best programme on TV atm

as for the horse, it obviously likes you, and wants to be your friendo, i say let it be your friendo in exchange for letting you ride it up vertical cliff faces :)

But then you spend half a day trying to get from the fast travel drop-off to the nearest shop...
