Ok, a lot of people seem to be over-exaggerating my feelings towards this game. I don't know maybe I didn't make it clear but what the heyhey, I haven't seen y'all in a while, thought I might make a new comment.
I don't hate Sonic 4, I'm just disappointed that it didn't try new things. I can understand why they wouldn't, with all the "fans" bashing anything that upsets the formula that the originals set out, but still, they couldn't do anything new, like a stage set on a beach (idk, first thing to come into my head, and surfing sonic would be awesome)
However I've seen some gameplay footage and they are trying at least some new things and they do look pretty cool. Like on casino street zone, you can run into cards and get rewards based on the hand you get, and then there are trails of cards Sonic runs along, which are awesome.
I don't hate sonic, I like sonic. If that abomination with the silver guy and the fire (I don't like to call it by name, that seems too nice) and Shadow the hedgehog hadn't happened, I'd say there hasn't been a single disappointing Sonic game I've played. I can genuinely enjoy Sonic Unleashed and Heroes and I seriously do like Sonic R. And Colours looks like a Sonic Fan's wet dream (not the "bashes anything different" kind, the "gives stuff a chance and tries to look past the bad stuff" kind)
One thing I do hate are the reviewers giving it a fantastic score just because it's like the old ones. They're viewing the game through Nostalgia's beer goggles and not seeing that it pretty much sonic 1-3 HD remix. New Super Mario Bros. did new stuff. Mega man 9 & 10 did new stuff (sort of). Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver did new stuff (and they actually are remakes) Sonic 4, from current Knowledge, does not, and that disappoints me.
I don't hate Sonic 4, I will buy it, and odds are I will love it. All I'm saying is, it didn't just have to be a love letter to long time fans. I bought Mega Collection Plus and the Mega Drive Ultimate collection, I can look back at the first ever video game I played whenever I choose, but I also want a new game. Something that gives me that feeling of heartwarming nostalgia that I get when I play Sonic 1-3, but also something that adds more to the table and gives me a good, modern experience that can stand up with other games on the market. SEGA are trying to give the fans what they want, which is good, but they can't try too hard or they'll lose everyone else, which would be bad.
