Yeah, well, life's a bit of a struggle when you graduate from college only to find out that every one (and I mean EVERYONE) wants 2 years of experience minimum. I'm moving 150 miles in 30 days to start work. So I had to table video games aside from my Wii.

I plan on going cheap anywho. I'll buy a used system as long as I can verify that it's not from the "brick" line and I'll probably buy some of the older games used unless I can get good deals. And I'm still gonna get a Wii U next year if there's a good lineup that isn't just a bunch of gimmicky ports.

Hmm... So many good choices, so little time and money.

I would say... Mass Effect 1 and 2, Bioshock, The Elder Scrolls 4 (if you can't play the PC version), Vanquish, Metal Gear Solid series... Seriously, the list can go on and on. I would like to ask something though. What genre you are interested the most? It'll help me make a more concrete list.
I like a lot of action, challenge and variety, and I don't mind a game where you start out as a wimp and slowly become a badass over time. I prefer split screen multi to online but that's not gonna be much of an option for a while since I'm moving to a small town. Other than that, I'd say adventure is my favorite.

Well, that's quite an endorsement. I also heard it's *****-ass hard, which I enjoy as well. I feel like something's missing if there isn't quite a struggle followed by a sense of satisfaction when I beat a game.
It sounds like the game would be right down your alley. I can't think of a recent game that has given me that sense "gamer's euphoria" like Demons Souls. Some of the boss fights and PvP (surprisingly, the community is still pretty active) will really give you that badass sense of satisfaction you were talking about. It's sincerely a great game: spot on atmosphere, pretty tight controls, interesting lore, great visuals, incredible sound design, and some really interesting RPG mechanics. It's got the whole package, and I strongly would recommend it for anyone looking for a PS3, or looking for a reason to pick up a PS3 over a 360.

The sequel, Dark Souls, is coming out on 360 as well as PS3 this October, but if you are going to be picking up a PS3 here soon, there's no reason not to give the game a purchase in the mean time, seeing as its only 20 bucks right now. It's definitely one of the strongest titles on the platform.

Aren't both consoles nearing the end of their lives? There have been noises lately about the next console generation. My advice would be, unless you can pick up a 360 or PS3 for super-mega-unbelievable-cheap, buy a PC instead or wait a year or so for the first of the next console generation.

I sound like a broken record, but if your a recent college grad student, take it from someone in the same boat.

Get a PS3, better exclusives, free online gaming (and yes the servers are reliable), It's a blue ray DVD player, It will stream Netflix just like the 360, if you can get an old one, it will cost you less and you'll get two generations worth of backwards compatibility.

As for games

Uncharted series covers all the bases.

I suggest getting a ps3. They last longer and have much better exclusives.

Too list a few: Uncharted, inFAMOUS, Little Big Planet, Heavy Rain, Metal Gear, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, and Sly Cooper.

I suggest Red Dead Redemption for anyone, because I love it so...

Captcha: Cool heads prevail. Kinda funny, because that's how I played RDR! :3

I think there are more PS3 exclusives than the Xbox now. (I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.) And you get a Blu-ray player and Love Film. So if you're big on movies aswell, PS3 is probably you're best bet. The only thing Xbox has going for it exclusive wise atm would be Halo, Gears and the original Mass Effect. IMO.
Um, "Love Film?" Yes, I do, but what is that?

This but on your PS3. You can stream movies and such. You also get BBC iPlayer.

Ah. In the States it's called Netflix, and it's on all 3 consoles. But still, the PS3's the only blue-ray player. And I still haven't seen Avatar or Inception in HD.

Infamous 1+2, Uncharted 1+2, God of War 3, Resistance 1+2, Killzone 2+3, Ratchet and Clank Future series, Metal Gear Solid 4, LittleBigPlanet 1+2, Heavy Rain...

Yeah, I'd say they're worth it. All fantastic games, and seem to be right up your alley. Though the Killzone games are a bit on the shorter side length-wise, they're still really fun to play.
Love the new avatar. Archer is my favorite new-ish comedy, aside from Community. Much more consistent than Wilfred (which I like nonetheless).

Mass Effect 1 and 2, both excellent action RPGs.

Three words:

DEMONS MOTHERFUCKING SOULS

That's all you need to know. It's worth it to get a PS3 to play Demons Souls alone. It's easily one of the best, if not the best, action RPG of this generation, and perhaps one of the best in the generation as a whole. Fan-fucking-tastic game.

I believe the PS3 has more exclusives than the 360 anyways.
UPDATE: today I bought a PS3, along with Arkham Asylum, Mass Effect 2, Demons Motherfucking Souls, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1, Rainbow Six Vegas 1, Uncharted 1, God of War Collection and Dead Space 1. And I am very very happy. In other news: I am out of cash. By year's end I'll be picking up the sequels, and by the time I have the free time available for Dead Island and Battlefield 3 and Bioshock Infinite they will have gone down in price. Fuck yeah.

So, new question: what movies should I get for my new blu-ray player (I hate Michael Bay and love weird)?

For both
Red Dead Redemption, Bayonetta, Fallout 3, Bioshock, Nier, Super Street Figher IV, BlazBlue Continuum Shift 2, Saints Row 2.

If you get a 360 Gears of War 2 or wait for Gears 3

If you Get a PS3, Demons Souls or wait for Dark Souls
