If your interested in something free then try out the mods as mentioned. my favourite is Age of Chivalry. a bit steep learning curve but REALLY fun when you advance from newbie to beginner (even if you die, just the satisfaction of damaging that 1337 heavy knight or irritating archer is wonderfull).

check also out Zombie Panic: Source.

Btw Americas army is totaly free, but still a bit buggy. You don't need anything for this game. It's pure free game propaganda thingy...

Not rubbish, seriously....

Btw add me :D http://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561197998733551

Hey all, I've finally started to bother with Steam. I'd like to use it for inexpensive titles that I don't mind not having a hard copy of. I'm a happy gamer and I'm willing to try any genre.

So, bearing in mind that by cheap I mean less than £10, have you got any good suggestions?
Garry's Mod is a must.
But you do need a Source SDK game to be able to run it.

I'm not on steam any more... my university network won't let me access it. I don't want to ask about sorting it out because I'll get a speech about the importance of focusing on your work and being good little automatons.

For some cheap indie-type games, here are a few:

AudioSurf
Plants Vs Zombies
Peggle (Deluxe + Nights)

Any Valve games that are cheaper then £10 on there, then gettem.

Be sure to fully utilise the oodles of demos on there!

(Buy their game!)

OK, maybe you should get something with more gameplay first...
But if you want the most incredible mindfuck and emotional experience I've ever had from a video game, play this at some point.

For indie games, I highly recommend Zeno Clash [http://store.steampowered.com/app/22200/] and World of Goo - Play both demos to see if you like it. And the other two hundred demos while you're at it. For the rest, get the Orange Box. It is a must for every Steam user.

How are the prices on the UK Steam releases, may I ask? Hopefully not as outrageous as other EU releases. I'm curious as to how it relates to Direct2Drive UK. I've been buying a lot of games in pounds, makes my euros worth a lot more.

That free though
The SDK is, but the games' models aren't. You need to own Team Fortress, Half-Life 2 or Zeno Clash if you want to use some of these models. And that's also why the Orange Box is such a good choice: Lots of models to screw around with!

Watch this thread for steam deals, and join the Escapist PC Clan once you get a few games.

Edit: Medal of Honor: Airborn just got added to steam for $10, so that might be a good game to start with (I know that I'm buying it!).

If you can be bothered, and have a computer that's up for it, I suggest you save up for a while, and by the Valve Complete Pack, which pretty much gives you every game by Valve.
If you decide to plump for Valve Complete Pack, STOP RIGHT THERE!!!

Wait till november and then you'll get L4D2 in there as well, a saving of £30+.

If you know you'll never raise to that money, I recommend the orange box, plants vs zombies, and always watch for weekend/midweek deals!

Audiosurf is a fun game to start off with, but Garry's Mod is a must-buy. Or if you have a good computer, go for TF2, happy gaming!

I suggest buying TF2 and joining us for melee night in half an hour!

What, does it hurt to advertise?

Get the valve complete pack. Yes it's 90 euros(75 in your currency i guess) but its 22 games in total. After that, G-Mod.
