if you like resident evil 4 then shadows of the damned is a pretty good game by shinji mikami
very underrated game in my opinion silent hill hd collection also very good and the dead space series is fantastic
for fps killzone is good and so is the resistance series though the first 2 maybe outdated graphically
still a great series to play through also mentioned before the puppeteer is a masterpiece love that game to death

Out of the Souls games, I would personally recommend Dark Souls. Although when you get the chance, Demon's Souls is worth a purchase as well. Although last I heard the servers have been shut down, so you won't get the experience the PVP aspect of the game sadly.

Well, If we're also adding on PSN games I can recommend a few of those, too.
Crash Bandicoot 1, 2, and 3 and Spyro the Dragon 1, 2, and 3 for pick up and play action-adventure. Go with #2 for each series, at least.
Crash Team Racing if you plan on playing local multiplayer someday and want a cheap racer for 4 people. Jet Moto is also neat, but is only 2 player and gets dull playing alone after one circuit. Twisted Metal 2 is also a good 2 person car slaughter-fest. (TM 3 and 4 are not liked by most old school fans but have 4 player options. Rogue Trip: Vacation 2012 was made by TM 1 & 2's team and is pretty hilarious, but I don't think it made it to PSN. Everyone, get the Rogue Trip disc if you see it in a second hand shop.)
FFIX, FFVII and Chrono Cross for older JRPGs (and FFVIII if you're into Square's more WTF kind of stories). There's also Chrono Trigger, FFIV, FFV and FFVI, but all the PS versions of those 4 suffer from bad loading times(even on PSN from what I've heard). Go with the superior handheld versions unless they've gotten rarer since I've last looked.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night for 2D side-scrolling undead bashing and exploration.
For newer stuff, all I can think of is Guacamelee (which I actually have the Steam version of). You play as a luchador fighting skeletons and other freaky things with Dias de los Muertos imagery to rescue El Presidente's daughter. It's probably one of the most crazy-awesome things to hit the PS3. (Though, PS3/Vita owners who buy it now might feel stiffed since the PS4 version has the extra DLC included.)

Demon's Souls, Dead Space 2 and FEAR 2 are really good. FEAR2 is an FPS but its probably the best I've ever played so it's worth mentioning. The blend of sci-fi/horror in this game is awesome, espescially given the super satisfying gunplay. Dead Space 2 is like Resident Evil 4...in space.
