Let's not dilly-dally, as the title suggests I need a good (preferably clean and motivational) historical quote fit for a sort of...presentation. If it's possible would you kindly post alongside the quote who said it, why they said it and when they said it. Thanks for your time.

"Gentlemen, we must all hang together, else we shall most assuredly hang separately."
--Benjamin Franklin

(I'm pretty sure it was about the declaration of independence, but it could have been something different)

'If mankind minus one were of one opinion, then mankind is no more justified in silencing the one than the one - if he had the power - would be justified in silencing mankind.' It was said by John Stuart Mill. Not sure when he said it but he lived from 1806 to 1873.

Well, since you didn't really give much detail, I'll just give you my favorite quote ever.

"The day will come when, after harnessing space, the winds, the tides, and gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire." Pierre Teilhard de Chardin

"As a Christian I have no duty to allow myself to be cheated, but I have the duty to be a fighter for truth and justice."

You have to guess who said it though.

"If you have nothing to say, say nothing."
-Mark Twain

I hate it when people just talk to fill in space. So did Mr. Clemens there, I guess.

You're really going to have to be more specific.

What presentation? What theme?
Oh okay (this just generally goes out to the others in this thread who were asking for specifics), it's a pretty vague purpose behind my need for quotes but if you think it would help a newly-established roster for my class (Catholic high-school if that's of any use) has me tasked to find a historic quote for the week...that's it, if it had to be cheese-related then I would've asked to keep it to history's great dairy farmers but that really is the only specification, the rest is just common-sense (like I said, something general...clean and motivational. I don't want some line from the deepest, darkest corner of the grimmest book ever written by Nietszche for no better reason than "It sounds totally badass").

"'Be wary of people who use quotations.' I can't remember who said that." - Murdoc Niccals, Gorillaz

On a somewhat more serous note:
"Every normal man must be tempted, at times, to spit upon his hands, hoist the black flag, and begin slitting throats." - H.L. Mencken. Also, Mencken is like a fountain of quotable sayings. So, y'know, yeah.

I know not with what weapons World War III shall be fought with, but World War IV shall be fought with sticks and stones-Albert Einstein. Or something along those lines.

"All generalizations are false, including this one." -Mark Twain

(Okay, that probably isn't very helpful to you. http://www.brainyquote.com/ might be helpful for you to narrow your search down a bit more. Good luck)

Yes, that's a genuine quote.

Or my personal favourite, Mussolini:

Winston Churchill:

"Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few." during the Battle of Britain he said this in reference to the pilots of the Royal Air Force.

Don't know if he actually said this but he did enjoy his gentlemanly spirits so.....

After a women approached him and said "Sir, you are drunk." he replied with "Madam, I may be drunk but you are ugly, and when I wake up I will no longer be drunk."

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."
? Abraham Lincoln

One of the best quotes that explain a lot of peoples motives, its something I take to heart.
