I'm looking for a game with a compelling single player experience.

If you've got a PS2, then I would suggest finding a copy of Psychonauts, if you haven't played it already. It's fun and brilliant. Also, it has fantastic humor and writing.

i saw you didn't have a playstation, so there goes my recommendations of infamous and ratchet & clank xD

but my best single player games are:
painkiller
assassins creed 2 and brotherhood
dead space 1 & 2
bioshock 1 and 2
fallout, preferably 3, if not then new vegas is pretty good too.
bayonetta
providing you like a lot of music, audiosurf is a nice one to try.
minecrafts single player is pretty fun
bulletstorm has a fun single player + echo mode IMO.

Yeeeeah I wish I could afford a PS3, and then play all the exclusive series I've missed out on, like god of war, and infamous, and.... Um, well I'm sure there are other really appealing PS3 exclusives.

Painkiller is a new suggestion. Thank you!

Steam has just informed me that the whole F.E.A.R. Collection is only 10 dollars this weekend! I can't imagine that that is not a worth while deal. I wasn't in the mood for horror, though...

Anyway, thanks for all the help! Go ahead and keep adding to the list. Maybe we could even just post a list for people who are curious about good campaigns in the future... Either way, I'll see how I like this F.E.A.R. thing. Thanks again all. :)

and you're welcome, only got it myself a few weeks ago, and i've been having great fun with it. not really for story, but mindless fun is awesome ^^

I have a PC that can run anything, and an Xbox 360. Technically I have a Wii as well, but I'd have to pull it out of storage.
I hadn't thought of the witcher, do you need to have played the first game to get the full experience out of it?

Father Time: Long games are just what I'm looking for! Sadly, I don't have a Play Station.
I recommend The Orange Box on the 360 or PC if you want to mess around with the command console and NPC spawn cheats (fond memories). And since you technically have a Wii dust that thing off and get Metroid Prime Trilogy, one of the best gaming package deals out there. The first metroid prime alone is worth it, and all 3, well, that's one hell of a deal.

If you're looking for a good story with great characters, awesome plot twists, some incredibly well crafted puzzles, and don't mind a bunch of reading, get "Ghost Trick Phantom Detective" for the DS. Awesome game. Professor Layton and the Curious Village is another great DS game with a great story and wonderful characters.

Deus Ex or The Orange Box, depending on how much you have to spend.

Depends how long of a game you're looking for.

Child of Eden is like 3 hours long, but it's the most beautiful experience I've ever had.

Buying Alice: Madness Returns gets you the original Alice. Both games are amazing and twisted platformers. Plus, the new one has combat with a feel similar to God Hand. In which I mean, needing consistent focus.

Metro 2033 is dark, hardcore shooter. Definitely worth checking out.

Red Dead Redemption is fun with tons of content, it took me a couple days.

Bioshock 2 isn't that bad for a game that can never out-do its predecessor.

Banjo Kazooie: Nuts N Bolts will eat up years of your time, but it's not as compelling as it is fun.

Bayonetta is a long game that is over the top and simply amazing.

Final Fantasy XIII is incredibly long and gets fairly compelling at disc two.

The Witcher 2 is great, but you may want to wait for the console version.

Also, check the XBLA for the Deathspank franchise or any Tim Schafer games such as Stacking (very compelling, complex game) and Costume Quest.

Those are my recs outside of the obvious: Assassin's Creed franchise, Bioshock, Mass Effect, Oblivion, and Beyond Good and Evil HD.

I'll recommend Outland from the downloadable end of things. Very immersive, challenging but rewarding, and gives you that perfect blend of learning some patience and practicing your skills.

Disc wise, I'll throw in some support for Prototype, Infamous, Assassins Creed, Dragon Age, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and Darksiders. They're all lots of fun.
