I'm not even enjoying myself anymore.

(I search barred and didn't find anything, though it is very possible I missed something)

So, as of late, my weekly routine consists of classes on Monday and Wednesday, choir practice on Tuesday night, work on Thursday afternoon, Friday morning, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning. Every Wednesday, a buddy of mine comes over and crashes at my place for the night and we're usually on X-Box Live until the wee hours of the morning, passing back and forth between rounds of Modern Warfare 2, which leads me to my topic.

I don't even enjoy the game anymore (I did for awhile, but once I went prestige, I just lost interest), yet I keep playing because I've just fallen into this rut. I've tried switching out MW2 with other games, but nothing really works. My interest in the medium is dwindling for the time being. So, my question... Do any of you just play a certain game, or just play in general just because you've grown so accustomed to gaming that you couldn't imagine not doing it in your spare time? And if you ever were, how'd you break out of your routine?

I have multiple hobbies other than video games: Comic books, writing, and table-top gaming to name a few. If I get bored of a game I will generally jump to another genre (FPS's bore me fast). I generally don't play enough games these days to get stuck in these ruts anymore thankfully... used to though... probably why I started playing WoW after Modern Warfare, Halo 3 and RPGs couldn't keep me interested. Then I got bored of WoW too.

All I can suggest is try other games and hobbies.

I've tended to stop playing my 360 and started to read more often. Still trying to finish War and Peace then I might read some Warhammer novels.

I've got some other hobbies, and I did leave out plenty of time in which I do partake in various other activities, including writing and film (both the practice and the cinema), but a number of other hobbies have fizzled out. I used to be big into the table-top game Heroscape, but I don't have enough friends interested in it to get a good game going unfortunately...

Well this is my experience and it might help. I started playing Knights of the Old Republic again and just can't stop. It's just way too fun. You must realize that I don't get new games often and I was entirely bored with my catalog, so I picked it up and played it. I am now having much more fun with a game than I have in a long time.

Yeah I know how that is. Generally when I get so bored of video games I simply can't play them I try to find something else to do entirely. The simple answer is to just not overplay them. I miss the days when I could play the same game for days and days without getting bored :(

I'd do that with Tales of Symphonia (favorite game, and coincidentally, one of the few JRPGs I can tolerate) but a friend from school borrowed it and transferred, so he's still got it. You'd think I would be able to find another copy (I work at a game store), but I can't for some odd reason, and I just know that would cure me of my gaming boredom.

You and me both. I remember playing Sonic 3 in fifteen hour intervals. I just can't do that anymore.

I think my original Sonic 3 cartridge has all the save slots completed with all seven super emeralds :p

World of Warcraft, every evening. Partly out of obligation to my guildies, partly cause I need those goddamn emblems... and then there's the RP.

Nice. God, I loved that game. I've got the 360 Sega Collection thing. Maybe I'll replay through some Sonic games. Some Kid Chameleon and Comix Zone as well. Inadvertently, thanks for the idea!

Pace yourself. Plug in an old system that hasn't seen the light of day in a while. Invite a friend. Play something that you would otherwise ignor. OR get a web cam, get footage of your favorite games, toys, or whatever, and make a review show about it. Hell, anything to break the boredom.

Awesome. With how bizarre that game could get, I can only imagine the shirt. Altered Beast was one of those games that just never got the attention it deserved.

That's what I'm gonna end up doing, popping in my Sega Collection for my 360 and rock out some Sonic 2 and 3, Altered Beast, Comix Zone, and Kid Chameleon. Sometimes you gotta look into the past to make it to the future.

It's MW 2. It kills people's brains. Seriously.

Kidding.

My 360 almost always comes on when I get home. However, playing primarily for achievements keeps me out of that rut because I never play the same game routinely, unless it's REALLY good.

Sega games kicked ass (at least most of the Genisis ones) and you will likely find some reasons why your old games were your favorite. And reviewing them always makes you observe them diffrently. For example, I just finished a FFVII playthrough, and hell, I know why I like the game in spite of the many faults. Resident Evil 2&3 are the same.
Go through your collections, pick one at random, make a to-play list, and make it more of a task. Setting a goal is often better than lounging and thinking of what game you want to play.

MW2 is at the end of its run for me. At the time, I just needed a thoughtless shooter to keep me occupied, and I got it for free, so I figured what the hell? But I did kind of burn out on it. And I can't play for achievements. I've tried, but it just doesn't get me going.
