I'm not even enjoying myself anymore.

Oh dear.

On-topic, try getting some different games. The Alien vs. Predator, Trackmania, and Valve games should get you back on your feet with gaming. They got me back when I grew bored.

Do any of you just play a certain game, or just play in general just because you've grown so accustomed to gaming that you couldn't imagine not doing it in your spare time? And if you ever were, how'd you break out of your routine?
I went through a phase when I was playing World Of Warcraft. I did used to enjoy it, but it turned into an out-right chore until the point I just got sick of it. It took well over a year between me starting to get sick of it and me finally wanting to quit it (I'm currently trying to fix something about Blizzard accusing me of selling my account before I do stop the subscription).

Besides that, no, and the amount of games I have reflect how quick I am to get bored of games. Sometimes I wonder if it isn't so much the games as just me growing tired of games in general. I mean, some games did manage to get me into computer games more, but generally I am bored of games. However, I don't see myself doing anything else at all.

There's generally two types of computer games in my book. The kind that I stop playing because my give a damn got broken at some point and I couldn't be arsed to get a new one, and the kind that I stop playing because starvation is setting in and I'm starting to get the shakes. There's really been a lack of the latter one lately, but I've been compensating with increased work hours and a new programming project.

I know exactly where you're coming from. I have been gaming for roughly 20 years (holy shit, that hurts to say). I'm finding it harder and harder to justify picking up a new game these days. After working as a contractor for a gaming company the last 5 years (until last December) and spending so much time playing games through middle school, high school, and college (twice!), I found my attachment to games dwindling significantly. I've found that the opportunity cost of gaming versus living my life doing other things has shifted. I get much less out of gaming now than I do other things I used to take for granted.

My honest suggestion: find other things to occupy your time. Not only will it help you assess your life a bit, but you'll have fun and, if you should so desire, you can always game when you do want to. I've spent the better part of the last week playing Conviction and am having fun. However, my interest in MW2, BC2, AC2, L4D2 (my, it has been the year of the sequel, hasn't it?) waned quite quickly and I'm sure it will with Conviction as well.

If you're not sure gaming is what you want to do right now, that might just be a healthy choice. I quit my contracting gig and cut down on my gaming and am actually much happier these days.

Try some non-video gaming like Settlers of Catan, Dungeons and Dragons, or going to the gym. You could also just hold out a few weeks until your classes end then change up your work schedule, then get new friends. And change religions, and sell your car, and live in the woods. You know, nothing drastic or unreasonable just something to break the rut.

(I search barred and didn't find anything, though it is very possible I missed something)

So, as of late, my weekly routine consists of classes on Monday and Wednesday, choir practice on Tuesday night, work on Thursday afternoon, Friday morning, Saturday evening, and Sunday morning. Every Wednesday, a buddy of mine comes over and crashes at my place for the night and we're usually on X-Box Live until the wee hours of the morning, passing back and forth between rounds of Modern Warfare 2, which leads me to my topic.

I don't even enjoy the game anymore (I did for awhile, but once I went prestige, I just lost interest), yet I keep playing because I've just fallen into this rut. I've tried switching out MW2 with other games, but nothing really works. My interest in the medium is dwindling for the time being. So, my question... Do any of you just play a certain game, or just play in general just because you've grown so accustomed to gaming that you couldn't imagine not doing it in your spare time? This happened to me back in the 64 days when console multiplayer became a reality. Every weekend was Mario Party, over and over. I loved the game but after a while I wasn't sure why we were even playing anymore. I remember during a bobsled run minigame my buddy fell asleep at the controller and we careened off an edge.

We decided we should start playing board games and I have loved the switch...until everyone became obsessed with playing the SAME board game over and over again...and now I am playing my XBLA Perfect Dark...so everything comes around full circle!

This one's tricky! Change it up, expand your horizons, then when you come back to the game a bit later you will miss it and appreciate it a bit more maybe?!

First step is to play something other than MW2. That's your first mistake.

Use your PC to emulate N64, PS1, and DS games and prepare yourself for a world of gaming.

Just stop playing and do something else. I once went 6 months without playing videogames, television, before I even had the internet. I just replaced it with watching films or exercising.

Used to play games because I enjoyed them, now I play them because I have nothing else to do. No friends (and in any case would be rather difficult because, among other issues, I don't speak Finnish) and bugger all else to do in this part of the country. At this point, i'd run into a cave and fart in a bear's face in order to get it to chase me so at least i'd have something to do. And if the bear catches me, at least it'll put me out of my misery.

I recently hit this wall similar to yours with Global Agenda. Then, I bought Batman: Arkham Asylum and Beat Hazard off Steam. I haven't been able to go back to Global Agenda since.
Well, okay. Maybe that's a lie. I'll log every once in awhile to let the agency know I'm not dead, but then I go back to what I was doing. Work helps too, as lame as it sounds. It works for me.

Or I just do something else. play drums, draw, watch movies, laugh at stupid people on gameshows, etc.

I typically game so much because it's my preferred form of entertainment. Similar to how some people will sit and watch TV even though nothing's on, I'll play any random game in my library just to pass the time and listen to my podcasts. Right now, I'm trying to get all those bloody light seeds in Prince of Persia.

But, you know, I like to mix things up, I play TF2 and Left 4 Dead in the breaks between hunting down every last orb. I never really fall into a place where I play a bad game just because there's nothing else to do, if I can help it at all, I'll make sure I like the game before devoting my time to it.

Hmm. Nearer the end of my WoW days I did continue to play the game, just out of loyalty to my division. Didnt last long though, as a few of them fucked me over. FInally quit after that, and havent touched it since. Glad I did quit in all honesty.

I'm finding it harder and harder just to get INTO a game, let alone enjoy it. Most of the time I'll just be staring blankely. Not smiling when something awesome (or what would have been considered awesome before now) happens. I think I may have accidentaly sold my gaming soul somehow.

Whenever I get bored of playing a game I usually switch to a different game. After awhile I will have an interest in playing the game I got bored with and start playing it again.

About a week ago I got back into playing Rome: Total War. Before that I had played Dragon Age: Origins for about a month. I am also really considering playing Spore too.

Honestly, I'm in the exact same position. I've been playing old games on high difficulties, which seems to ease the boredom.

I've tended to stop playing my 360 and started to read more often. Still trying to finish War and Peace then I might read some Warhammer novels.
That's an odd jump to make. I've read War and Peace and while it was quite excellent, like most works that come in such weighty tomes it's an incredible grind to get through. Going from that to something that's borderline pulp just seems a bit odd.
