Try a different genre entirely. Maybe the multiplayer FPS scene is too old for you now: try a story-based RPG like Final Fantasy, or a classic side-scroller like Super Metroid.

Overall, your goal is to find out why you play. If it's just for fun, then find the games that entertain you and stick with them. If it's for competition, find another game that satisfies you that way (I recommend Gears of War 2). If you like storytelling, play Mass Effect or Final Fantasy. Find a reason to play, and get games accordingly.

Example of "having a system."

I play MMOS & casual games in-between regular gaming. When one becomes tedius, I switch to another. I keep a stockpile of games I haven't ever played before, I have 6 MMOS I play for about a month each year (keeps them fresh & less tedious), & then I just go to BigFish/BigSea Games when I want to play something relaxing.

Sometimes I just need a break from gaming; I'll watch entire seasons of shows on TV or online, I'll watch online videos all way (TGWTG, Escapist, YouTube, Ashens, Cinema Snob, AVGN), I'll go buy a pile of comic books, I'll visit humor/oddity sites that take up hours of time (Oddee, Cracked, Something Awful, 2leep, Caveman Circus, Fork Party, Engrish, FailBlog, Uphaa, Digg), or I'll watch webtoons (Homestar Runner, Off Todd, Ebola World, Floating Hands Studeos, Ill Will Press, Umop, Miss Dinamite, FatPie, Weebl's Stuff, Liquid Generation, Newgrounds).

The one thing I've failed to do is put variety in the types of regular & MMO games I play; I pretty much only enjoy fantasy RPGs, city builders, & sims. There are a few shooters I like, but the only one that will work on my computer is Serious Sam 2. I really wish I could play Goldfinger....

Well this is my experience and it might help. I started playing Knights of the Old Republic again and just can't stop. It's just way too fun. You must realize that I don't get new games often and I was entirely bored with my catalog, so I picked it up and played it. I am now having much more fun with a game than I have in a long time.
I'd do that with Tales of Symphonia (favorite game, and coincidentally, one of the few JRPGs I can tolerate) but a friend from school borrowed it and transferred, so he's still got it. You'd think I would be able to find another copy (I work at a game store), but I can't for some odd reason, and I just know that would cure me of my gaming boredom.
checked Ebay?

My friends and I tend to come on xbox live, hang around in a party together, and spend ages trying to decide what game/s to play. We all gave up on CoD long ago, and now Battlefield is getting old. At the moment, we find some entertainment from the Blur beta, but that's not gonna last much longer.

I tend to find that we all come on live without an actual idea of what we're going to do, and that we attempt to work out what to do when we're there. So unlike the OP, I don't get stuck in a rut of a certain game, but I do still seem to be stuck in that same kind of boredom.

Lost Planet 2 needs to arrive soon dammit.
