You do realize that system only exist to keep you playing the game right? You keep playing to get more stuff, giving you a goal as opposed to just playing, getting bored with the gameplay and leaving. Come to think of it:

What's wrong with that?

I happen to enjoy progression. It's the reason why I'm currently running around with my diamond camo Assault Shield and Crossbow in BO2 as opposed to putzing around in Natural Selection 2 or Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

I didn't say anything was wrong with that, I was pointing out why the OP's idea doesn't work in the context of game design.

Defeats the entire objective of levelling. The idea is that you have to work up and grind to the best stuff so you'll keep playing their game. Clearly it works very well.
If that's the way they treat their gamers, then they're not building their games right. I think I'll go play some Quake 3.

Id like to personally point out that BO2 actually did a dang good job of the leveling system this time.
1. Some of the best perks, like ghost, are saved until VERY last. Hell, Ghost is 55.
2. You can keep 1 item after you prestige permanently after each prestige. Play through once, you get to keep your favorite item.
3. Prestige mode helps with the 'fairness' aspect. Someone whos been playing 6 months more is going to have the exact same classes after they prestige as the newbie has.
4. Gun unlocks do not reset every prestige, and they even have incentives to hamstring yourself. Example: To get Gold camo for most guns, you have to get kills without perks/attachments. Yeah. Also, there is a special camo, diamond camo, that you can only get after you unlock all the gold camos for a class. Keeps things mixed up.

So yeah... leveling up is done right in BO2... AC3 though is a different story.

The method Counter Strike has done for years works. You don't level up, but people are rewarded for good performance with money, which buys better weapons. Also all the money you earn in a match exist only within that match.

I feel I should mention that this game has been played by tens of thousands consistently for over a decade now, so the whole "Incentive to keep playing" excuse with unlocks and leveling is an inaccurate premise.
