It has also come to apply to outer-space foreigners but still fundementally means fear or dislike of other cultures, nations or ethnicities on earth. The sheer amount of people labelled as xenephobic on earth, whether Oswald Mosley, Hitler, Glenn Beck, Nick Griffin or someone else. Note how Hitler, a mass murderer, falls into the same category as Beck, a political commentator with questionable ideological stances. This is because both of them suffer from the root problem of xenaphobia - an innate distrust of anything not of their nation and/or ethnicity.

And would a Batarian be of your nation or ethnicity? If they visited Earth, would they not be a foreigner?Oxford dictionary and Merriam and Webster both disagree with you on the idea that the foreigner has to be from Earth. I'll say it again, Xenophobic is the correct term.

Seconded. This is something I always wondered about, especially in fantasy settings. Is there racism in D&D? Is the Man keeping down fellow humans while also hating orcs because they're too green and keeping elves out of his schools? Is it okay to be speciesist because the other guy is physically different and maybe ACTUALLY incapable of happiness and love and freedom or whatever?

And for the record, I would never let my daughter date a hobgoblin. That's just not right.

Are you kidding? Of course there's racism in D&D. Elves are huge racists, described as looking down at the "younger, less races" in the Players Handbook. Dwarves are basically isolationists most of the time. Humans also like to keep to themselves and only trade with other races when it's profitable. In Lord of the Rings, its even worse. Elves consider Orcs to be vermin, humans to be dirty and uncultured and Dwarves to be hairy, repulsive ugly creatures.

You missed my point. Elves hating orcs is speciesist, strictly speaking. Racism would be hatred of others of one's own species (who are in some way different). Orcs are often shown to be racist - one tribe will hate another tribe because 'they're that other group' and no greater reason. But do silver-haired elves hate brown-haired elves? In Middle Earth, there's political tension, but you rarely hear 'let Sauron have them, those dirty bunch of barbarians.'

Though I suppose the classic Drow vs. Every Other Elfkind would be racist.

And the High Elves feel superior to everybody else and the Wood Elves just don't like other Elves. So yeah, it does exist. But you're right, I did completely miss that point.
