I'm not worried about Mass Effect 3 :)

Before I start, there are some spoilers about the beggining of the Game here.
Most of you will of already heard it some where but I will spoiler-tag them, but you may want to read it all for your selves. So if you don't want spoilers, then don't click on the massive "spoiler" in the box. Obviously :)

OK! I was reading my Local XBOX Magazine, and I came across this little article on the up-coming Mass Effect 3:

[spoiler/]
In his effort to save the galaxy from the next reaper invasion, Commander Shepard tends to rub the wrong people in the wrong way. But as the first human Spectre who can essentially operate outside the galactic laws laid down by the Citadel, this isn't usually much of a problem. However, according to the first details of Mass Effect 3 released by BioWare, he's made a particulary powerful and resourceful enemy in the form of the highly secretive agency Cerberus. Having worked directly with the head of Cerberus, a Human known only as The Illusive Man, Shepard is now on the run with a Cerberus bounty on his head.

Mass Effect 3 opens with Shepard being put on trial on earth for his part in breaking the deep cover operative Dr Amanda Kenson out of prison in the Arrival DLC for Mass Effect 2. Halfway through the trial, the Reapers invade and Shepard must flee to the Normandy for the Prologue, before begginning another recruitment drive that'll include some familiar faces. Confirmed squad-mates are Liara, Ashley or Kaiden, and Garrus, if he survived the final onslaught in Mass Effect 2. Other former Normandy Crew members to make a appearance (as long as they survived ME2) but not necessarily jumping aboard are: Wrex, Legion, Anderson and Mordin.

Other details that have surfaced include a bigger skill tree with powers that can evolve several times, more customisable weapons and armour, and also, a range of Good and Bad endings for Mass Effect 3- made more significant by the fact that this is the last game in the series, though of serveral spin-offs including a Mass Effect Shooter are sticking...

Also Included as notes in the margin:
*The reapers can finnally be defeated in ME3, though that's not a guaranteed conclusion.
*Combat will be harder than in the previous games and will include a bigger focus on Melee.
*Did you spare the Rachni? Then Mass Effect 3 is where you'll feel the repercussion of that choice.

[/spoiler]

For those of you who don't want anything spoiled, here is what I put in a nuttshell:

*The Return of Former Crew members.
*A much Bigger Skill tree than in the previous games.
*Good and Bad endings to the game.
*More customisable weapons and armour (Mods are making a come back).
*Tougher Combat.
*Repercussions of former actions.

Many people have doubted this game, and, to be fair, so did I at first. I know I shouldn't get hyped up (Lionhead have already taught me that lesson *looks at Fable III collecting dust on the shelf*) But BioWare do not like to let down their fans.
DA2 one of their weaker games, but most of their games are of top quality, and someone already told me that DA2 was made by a different team of designers within BioWare.

Right. The game could be aweful. It could just be a massive middle finger in the centre of the screen. But look at all of BioWare's previous games, and tell me that you 100% believe it will be bad. They seem to be putting in all of good things that made Mass Effect 1 & 2 good, and improving on it. You can't say from the info they've given you that it doesn't have RPG elements. So I'm looking foward to this game, and you'll be a fool not to in my opinion.

I'm not worried ether. In fact, I don't care.

WITCHER 2 OUT TOMORROW YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.

(But at the very least I can say that I'm not as scared about them rushing the game and giving us a second DA2)

No Tali? =(
Tali's in. She was confirmed as a party member in either Playstation 3 Magazine or PC Gamer UK, the June 2011 issue.
Good, now if they would only confirm Legion.

I am not worried about the game overall, I know I will enjoy it very much. My concern is that they are doing what so many other developers are right now and that is simplifying their games to attract a broader audience. If the game is a shooter with little story, nobody is going to notice, but when the games are known for their stories and interactions, simplicity doesn't bode well.

A small and irritating example from both Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 is how they made companion quests "compulsory", by this I mean that the missions just came up on your to-do list without any effort on your part.

Part of RPG's is exploration, and to have the game just tell you to talk to your team members is immersion breaking and adds monotony to the game, as well as making the game feel more linear as completionists will feel compelled to do every little quest even if they don't like the character and don't want to help them.

Bioware have never let me down, not one of their games would I consider bad. That Dragon Age 2 is the worst game they have ever made (in my opinion) and yet is still head and shoulders above everything else speaks a lot as to how good a developer Bioware really is.

We may see the return of Ash/Kaidan, Liara, Wrex as squadmates. And surviving ME2 squaddies will have bit parts and cameo roles. Maybe a bit more for a ME2 romance.
And there are new squad mates.
I was only putting what was in the article, I'm sure there will be new squad members, but that was a list of those returning. Though some of the Squad Mems in ME2 were annoying, I cannot stand Ashley. I liked Kaiden and all the others, but Ashley was just nasty and I don't like that.

Aww crap... if Liara comes back, my ren-fem-shep will have to choose between her and garrus, and that's a tough choice. However, if there is a possibility for a gay relationship with tali... my xenocest will be complete!

I have faith that Bioware isn't going to let me/us down. I'm just worried about EA's influence and their focus on "expanding to appeal to other markets". The thing I care most about is the story and I'm not worried about that, but there needs to be good game play to back it up. I'm not going to lie, I'm kind of crossing my fingers on this one, but you're right. Bioware doesn't like to disappoint their fans, I just hope they learned a lesson or two from DA2 and that they don't let EA mess things up.

So you're suggesting that the entire point of Mass Effect 2, to build up an elite squad to help Shepard take on the Reapers, is completely pointless?

I am not worried either. It is very rare when Bioware lets me down (the only time that that has happened so far was with Mass Effect, and even then it was not a bad game, just not as good as I was expecting), and there recent games like DA:O and ME2 have been brilliant. I have total trust that Bioware will make a great game. They proved that they were not afraid to take risks with 2. My only hope is that 3 maintains the same level of quality (or greater) in writing, aesthetics, sound, and gameplay that 2 had.

So your squad is just expected to dissolve at the end of the game? I understand the point of making the squad in-game, but within the context of the overall series, it felt like the focus on squad characters for the second game was building up the importance for the finale.

Because every single squad member in Mass Effect 2 has the potential to die, you really can't expect any of them to have any important parts.
Sure, if they're still alive at the end of your ME2 save game they'll probably show up and be like -- "Dude! S'up!" But that's about it.
Why would they write in a long and intricate storyline into ME3 involving Legion or Grunt or Tali as squad members when (I'm sure) many people's save games indicate that these characters are dead?
Tali and Garrus are squad members for Mass Effect 3. Both could potentially be dead from the events of Mass Effect 2. So yeah, your entire point is kind of invalidated there.

It's probably gonna suck ass. Don't kid yourselves.
If it sucks as much as Mass Effect 2 did, then I know I'll be enjoying the crap out of it when it comes out.

Well Mass Effect 1 was a RPG. Mass Effect 2 was a FPS. If Mass Effect 3 can find a good medium with these. Than yes I would not be scared at all. Truefully I'm not scared at all Bioware has released games that have stood the test of time. Such as Kotor.

Yeah, pretty much.
I don't know what game you played, but ME2 was about building up an elite squad to help Shepard take on the Collectors.
Reapers kinda got tacked on at the end as the ones behind the Collectors.
Collectors were just an arm of the Reapers and now they're gone.
This seems pointless as at the end of the game, you realize that Shepard actually does nothing at all to prevent or even stall the Reaper invasion. (Unless you count the Arrival DLC -- which not everyone bought.)

At most, they were able to shed some light on the Reapers' purpose in systematically "destroying" organic life every couple of millennia. They seem to do it to procreate.

Abduct organics -> Liquidate -> ??? -> Profit!

Because every single squad member in Mass Effect 2 has the potential to die, you really can't expect any of them to have any important parts.

Anyway though.

DA2 was all hyped up for this save game import bullshit too -- and what was it for? Cameos. "Oi -- I'm that obscure character that the Grey Warden helped out on the side quest, but now I have inexplicably moved from Fereldan to the Free Marches along with every other NPC that the Hero of Fereldan happened to meet so the player can see them and think, 'Yaaaaaay -- imported save file!'"
And half of the time, it was completely wrong and broken.
