Trying to play NBA2K13 was a complete disaster. Couldn't shoot properly or pass or dunk or anything. Could dribble okay, but I'm pretty sure the computer handles that.

Dad was forced to take over for both our mental states.

EVE online. Man is it fun to read about, but my god is it a pain in the ass to get into.

So, I bought Ninja Gaiden, thinking that it couldn't be any harder than the original God of War games. I mean, I had (almost) gotten through that on the hardest difficulty, so how much worse could this be?

Answer: A lot.

I died within the first ten minutes of playing the game. Second boss fight constantly handed me my ass over and over again.
You see, I forgot that with God of War I started on the easiest difficulty and worked my way up. Ninja Gaiden's easiest difficulty...wasn't a difficulty, it was letting the game play itself.

Well, that's one series I'll never go for again.

The first time I booted up Evochron Mercenary could be summed up as an "out of my depth" moment.

"Alright! I'm in a spaceship, cool beans."

10 minutes go by

"Okay! I've figured out how to move, steer, and shoot-what the hell did I just do? Why is the screen blue OH DEAR GOD WHERE AM I?!"

5 minutes later

"WHAT THE HELL GET AWAY FROM ME! OH SWEET SCALY JESUS THERE'S MISSILES EVERYWHERE! WHYYYYYY. WHERE DID YOU ASSHOLES EVEN COME FROM?! WHY IS MY RADAR COMPLETELY RED?!"

30 seconds later

"Welp, I should probably look at the control list and figure out how to actually save."

Opening the controls list

"This is HOW MANY pages?!"

As a general rule of thumb I am more than capable of diving head first into any given game and unlocking all of it's secrets. The problem I have is always gaming whilst in a group chat with friends, and everyone tries to drop knowledge bombs on me about features that I am hours away from even knowing about.
Videogames have teams of human beings behind them, who have at least left you a trail of bread crumbs leading up to a comprehensive understanding of the game. Any game you play can be bumbled through, and you will have a good time gradually unlocking the nuance of the game. And for posterity, I do mean games like Total War and Crusader Kings 2. XCOM: Any Iteration and Path of Exile. These are all games absolutely centred on learning how to play. At the start of all of these games you'll feel totally out of your depth, but it's by design, and swimming is much easier than it looks.

The time that stood out the most was when I was playing Arcana Heart 3, and feeling good about myself for getting some wins. I wasn't good, but I felt that I was improving. Then I played a regular player, and it was like I was playing tic-tac-toe and that ************ was playing 3D chess. I couldn't even fathom what he was doing other than annihilating me.

Also, my first time turning on Crusader Kings 2.

Dwarf Fortress.
Oh, totally.

It's probably one of the only games I love that I haven't been able to play (Not for lack of trying, either).

Witcher games.
I want to love them, but god damn it that battle system, skill system and whole alchemy crap feels unnecessary complicated.
Once you get the hang of it though, it becomes incredibly rewarding.

I guess the first time I played Dungeons of Moria or Dungeons of the Unforgiven were pretty super-confusing and I didn't get very good at them until later, but that was really just a lack of knowledge.

Master of Orion 3 (not 1 or 2) gave me that feeling too.
