There's no TL;DR for this post, so if you want to comment, please read the whole thing before doing so!

Hello Escapists.

Now, when reading the headline of this subject, I realize what you might be inclined to think, but I'll start off by saying that I'm not a neo-nazi, racist or extreme nationalist. I'm just puzzled.

I'm going to spark, what I hope, to be a reasonably well-behaved discussion. SO BEHAVE!

I'm kind of nervous at this, but here I go;

Have you ever thought about the fact that saying the words "I'm proud to be white" makes you sound like a member of the Ku Klux Klan? Well I have, and I'm sick of it.

If an African-American stands up in a crowded room, full of strangers, with a fist in the air and says "I'm black, and I'm proud", white people will nod their heads and clap their hands politely, like he/she is saying the most inspiring thing in the world. But if a white man does exactly the same (not that I believe any sane white man has ever done so) people will immediately think back to World War II.

Of course the above example is exaggarated, but now you get the gist of it.

Here's a situation that's actually happened to me once or twice:

If I'm going out at night, with my friends, having a beer and a laugh, and I accidentally bump into the wrong guy, prompting an immediate apology from my side, but he persists at offending me - I'll counter-retort. That's the kind of guy I am. Problem is, if he has a different skin-colour than me, well then I'm suddenly a racist, and all of the people at the club are drawn into the spectacle.

Did I say anything bad about his ethnicity, country or colour? No. But that doesn't mean he's not a dick. Calling him a dick, though, makes me a racist.

When did this happen? I'm in my twenties and I realize that "white people" have done some pretty bad stuff during the years, you'll never hear me deny that - but that has got nothing to do with me. It's history. Sure, it's a bit of my history too, but what has been done by some short guy with a weird beard and delusions of grandeur, or a bunch of slave-traders in the 19th century reflects nothing about my own personality.

Furthermore, when we Danes, (I'm from Denmark) do something bad in the eyes of, I'll use this example, the islamic world - such as distributing a satire-drawing of the Prophet Muhammed, in a nationwide newspaper - and then defend it to the rest of the world by being proud of our right to free speech, suddenly half of the nation is feeling ashamed of themselves.

It's not that I think it was a wise thing to do. Heck, it caused a lot of people to be very angry with our country, but I'm not in any way ashamed of the fact that we defended our right to free speech when the all of the islamic socities in the world screamed 'bloody murder'.

I am proud to be who I am, as a caucasian male. And I'm proud to stand firm for what I believe in. It's not like I'll go around spewing that out of my mouth. But if I would, I couldn't. Or, well, I could, but let's just say it'd be a bad idea.

Phew. I think that covered most of what was on my mind. So, that's the deal guys (and girls). What I want from you, is your constructive input;

What do you think of this? Am I right in saying that "white people" are somehow discriminated against, concerning this particular issue, or am I completely of my rocker?

Again, I want to stress that any racist comments or anything that resembles any such will be promptly reported.

Nothing wrong with being proud to be White.

Our society if permeated with apologists these days, who would have us attone for our forefather's sins. It's ridiculous. White people are discriminated against, in the sense that the establishment teaches we cannot be discriminated against.

You, sir, have inspired me to proclaim such things more often.

But I believe you're right. I've seen far too many situations where one white guy could be considered racist for something he said/did even though there was no racial intent.

Kids these days....

I love how apologetic us white people are for all of the atrocities that people have commited against black people, yet forget that America was founded on the genocide of the Native Americans.

I don't know, I guess I find pride in things I control, not in stuff I can't. I mean, I have hazel eyes, should I be proud of that? I don't think so, but then again, I shouldn't be ashamed.

Genetics and luck, that's all it is, so I don't see any reason to warrant pride or shame.

You're right. I actually get nazi cracks all the time for BEING ARYAN. I'm not allowed to be proud of my race, heritage, or family because we happen to be German in origin.
My opinion is that racism/sexism/religious intolerance (except for against Muslims, that shit is real and I see way too much of it) is dead now but is used as an excuse (especially unknowingly) for people who are not white male Christian/Catholics to get ahead in life. But then again, I'm bitter and from Michigan, where the only racists live in Howell.

Double Standards, how do they work?

Bro, you did nothing wrong. Almost everyone in this putrid world is a reactionary proto-human incapable of thinking for themselves. I am glad you had this train of thought, people take racism too soft or too hard, never correctly.

Keep being proud.

While I see what you mean, but when coloured people (especially Afrrican-Americans because of the history of slavery, etc.), stand up and say 'I'm proud to be black, it's kind of like giving evidence of having overcome that terrible past in order to be free people (so to speak). However, if a white person was to do the same thing there's no real reason for it. We, as caucasians, haven't been through the same kind of stuff as African-American people, so standing up for our ethnic background is kind of pointless and makes us look slightly racist, intentionally or no.

Except for the fact that Native Americans are given their own little countries on American soil, with their own law enforcement agencies, and are the only group genuinely allowed to place a casino anywhere in America. Just saying.

I think the problem that stems from that is we white people have a bit of a negative history with pretty much every other race out there. We can still call pride but we have to pick a country, like I'm proud to be Irish. It gives a little more specificity that tends to put the same amount of pride in a smaller group, thereby each person gets a little more even though odds are it's totally undeserved. Seriously, when was the last time you made a scientific breakthrough or were the first of your race/religion/disability/family/person with this colour of eyes to do something?

That's what I thought. And no hypocrisy, I'm in that group of undeserving pride people too and also am a shameless git.

Man I don't go out as much as I used to but when i do i am super aware of those of different skin colours around me. Not because i'm racist but because it seems like they can act a certain way and get away with it. It's worse still being a girl, it's like they don't understand personal space if that makes sense. I know a male friend of mine who got beat up by a group of darker guys cos of something a girl made up and told the group.

Even in the library at my uni, i can be sitting trying to study and there are like... using it as a social club on their phones and chatting away in wee groups.
Sorry i say they because i do not know if they are pakistani or indian or what, just a different colour.

Ha im just venting now but I know where you are coming from, they act inappropriate sometimes I feel and white people cannot really react to it or we are racist so we just sit quietly and they continue. :(

Sorry if i managed to offend anyone with that speel!

He's not talking genetically. He's talking culturally. Yes, there should be cultural pride.

two words... Thank, You.

I wouldn't say that I'm 'proud' to be white, but that's simply because why be proud of something as superficial as your skin colour. But now someone else has said this yeah, most of us have all publicly denounced racism and the crimes that have been committed throughout history because of it at some point in our lives, so when can I stop feeling like I still owe a debt to society just because I was born white? I call no fair.

I've never understood the point of being proud of your phenotype. It's like being proud that the sky is blue. Neither one is something you have any control over.

No one can be proud of something he hasnt done anything for to achieve it. You are white because your parents were. And you have your nationality out of the very same coincidence. There is nothing to be proud of but the things you achieved on your very own.
You are like a sports fan after his team became champion shouting "we won we won". You didnt take part in it at all. So be a whites fan if you must, but dont wonder if others think of it as pretty weird (at best).

I think it's kinda cool as a notion that my ancestors were Picts and Vikings. They knew how to do up Pagen barbarism PROPER... Though aside from being very \m/ METAL \m/, it was kinda a cut rate state of affairs considering the Egyptians, Greeks and Romans were already working out math, philosophy, permanent architecture, etc...

Still... Go Team! (I guess)
