So I started the game and so far everything is feeling familiar, though the intro movie makes me feel like I've stumbled into an episode of Berserk. I do like the feel of the Nexus, but I feel like I'm missing something. I can reach the the third level but it looks like there are levels above that I can't seem to find the way up to. Am I just missing the way up or does that unlock later on?
The top level as a bunch of statue with player who achieve high rank, so if you can get there you've seen everything.

The inner stairs go to Latria archstone, and the outer set goes to the Monumental (Maiden in Black will inform you of his purpose if she hasn't already) and upper echelon content. Some key NPCs will hang out up there later in the game, so it's worth a trip once in a while.

Just wanted to update. I finally finished the first real level(1-1). Partially due to being busy and not really having much time, partially due to being distracted by other things, but part of that is the fact that it took a little while to grab me. IIRC, Dark Souls had much the same issue where I didn't start feeling it until at least around the point I was done with the Undead Burg(or maybe the undead parish?). So I finally broke my way out to the bridge over the huge door and then I started thinking....yes, this is the Dark Souls I remember....including the trap I should have spotted and didn't until I was flattened by a bunch of giant balls(and realized I could have triggered it before I went down that slope). And of course, that one dude with the red visor who I tried to kill several times before realizing maybe I'd best come back to him later. He seems to be guarding something important and the whole thing reminds me of the black knights from DS.

I also switched to the royalty class from Knight once I heard the benefits of it, so had to retrace my steps a little.

There is also a bit of frustration. The fact that once I figured out that I could upgrade my weapons/armor and level up at bonfires in Dark Souls, I got used to investing my souls in that to cut down on my risk when venturing into new areas. Demons Souls......well, I couldn't actually level up until I could talk to the maiden in black again and I needed hard/sharp stones to actually upgrade my weapons/armor. Now that I beat 1-1 I have a lot more options on how to spend my souls and not just accumulate them.

The other bit I'm not sure if it's me or the game. I've died more then once because for some reason the items in my active slots seem to change without warning. My shield will be unequipped, my sword will swap with my wand and vice versa and my stock of healing watercress will be replaced with turpentine. Which isn't bad but it is annoying, especially when I'm at close quarters and really need to stab, not range attack. I swear I'm not hitting the buttons on accident but maybe I'm wrong. Is this a known issue or does it sound like I have butterfingers?

One other then that stands out. The bit where the monumental explains things to you felt weird. It's appreciated, but coming from Dark Souls I'm used to everything being really implied, conveyed through cryptic dialogue and item descriptions, and suddenly I'm getting this cut-scene "Now I shall explain the history to you" lore dump. In any other game this would be normal. In a souls game it seems odd.

But yeah, this whole thing feels like Dark Souls 0, or rather, more Dark Souls content cut from that game. And yes, I realize it's more the other way around because Demons Soul came first.

Apparently Dpad switching is a thing with even the other Souls games

http://www.giantbomb.com/forums/dark-souls-ii-8967/a-bug-with-weapon-switching-1475967/

Not sure how old your controller is? I haven't been exposed to this issue that I know of. Maybe once or twice and I forgot or thought I hit something else? Idk, but I've been playing DS1 a lot lately and it's been ok.

Upgrading is definitely more cryptic in this game, and the lore is a lie lol. As in, it's probably the best explaination of anything you're gonna get. In fact, it's probably because this is the first game that they felt an explanation was in order. You will learn as you go though like the others. I think the community is still active too for messaging and such, but I haven't gone back to it since last year.

Bosses that can be perticularly challegeing and can kill you without mercy:

1. The Tower Knight (Debatable but is definately more of a challege than other bosses)

2. Flamelurker (Specfically if you are a melee charcater)

3. Man-Eaters (2 bosses at once and you fight them ontop a bridge like place where they can push you off and fall to your death)

4. The Final Boss (He can "de-level" you)

So, because Demon Souls hates me and makes me feel like a noob all over again, I'm stuck on the Phalanx Archstone(whom I beat in one go once I actually got to him. hurray for me). More specifically, the long ass bridge that continually gets strafed by that ****ing dragon(and I thought the one in Dark Souls was irritating). I've found the underground passage that runs the whole way, but it appears barred at either end(one by the gate where the friendly NPC was hanging out and the other end the Merchant is sitting in front of like an asshole).

It looks like there should be a way of dealing with the gate on the near side but so far I've found no way to do so. Is there something I'm missing or is this Demons Souls being Demon Souls? If not, what's the trick to getting across the open spans of the bridge? I can make it all the way to the last open span and then die about halfway across(or a little more then that).

Or am I supposed to go do other areas and come back later, now that most of the other archstones are open to me now?

If I recall correctly, this is around the place Yathzee got frustrated and quit when he played the game. I can see why, though I intend to play all the way through.

The underpass of the bridge does have a doorway on the right hand side shortly before the merchant, but it is hard to see in all that darkness. Otherwise, with careful timing, you CAN run across the topside and not take damage. If you run right behind the flames, it's pretty safe. OR you can get 150 arrows(maybe more, depending on how strong your bow is) and climb the tiny tower bit after the first dragons pass and kill it with 2 arrows every time it passes over. Getz you I think 20k souls and a red dragon soul, or the soul is worth 20k, plus all the items lying on the bridge.

If you want to try and just run a ross the bridge, look out and watch the dragons animation in the distance. At certain points in its loop, it can't just fly to the bridge to attack you, so if you wait until it hits the "point of no return" for its cycle, you can buy yourself a few seconds.

If you go down the hall towards the merchant, and destroy all of the debrit, then there should be a staircase that takes you back on top of the bridge. Wait for the dragon to show up, and start running the moment he breathes fire. You really have to run.

And a little bit of advice for when you reach the flamelurker. If you're using a physical character, then make sure you find a weapon that does magic damage, use magic, or find an item that adds magic damage to your weapon. He shrugs off physical attacks like nobodies business.

The first section of the bridge out of the Phalanx hall is the only dragon hazard. Bait and chase its wake of fire under 50% burden like Dark Souls. The dragon is avoidable underneath after the first section, and the last he won't bother with. This bridge was a ***** for me at first too, so don't be discouraged. Coat your blade with some turpentine for the blue knights on the last leg. You will get one of the most useful spells in the game from the boss at the end.

Are you sure? It's the last span(the one between the second tower and the end of the bridge) where the dragon keeps killing me....and I have no option to continue underground from that point on. Well, I can, but then I run into that stupid merchant and can't get past him.

If I kill the dragon, does he respawn if I die or is he gone for good?

My bad. It's been so long since I've played that I forgot he does scour that leg as well. He's gone for the playthrough if you kill him though, but for some reason he never really bothered me on the final section. Probably because I was too preoccupied with the bastards waiting for me at the end.

Now that I think of it, yeah...what added difficulty to this fight was having to dash up to them and stay up there, because you'll get burned otherwise. I think why I didn't remember is because I always just killed the dragon earlier in new game+.

Remember that turpentine though. Slather that stuff on before you make the run up and try to take out the small guys before you get to 'ol blue eyes.
