The word "hipster" has seen quite a bit of misuse, but the modern version that I think makes the most sense is: "Young people who are being contrary solely for the sake of being contrary, and are quite smug about it."
Thanks for the edit. I try to keep things like this as academic as I can, but I have my biases. I've actually been thinking about it and if you want to distill it even further: They ARE the internet manifested. As stated, they are a sub-culture pastiche, but they don't hold on to anything very long. They're basically a human compilation of memes that constantly changes over time. If anything, people hate them because they are seen to represent all the negative aspects of the internet in real life.
As you might expect, by and large they're mythical beasts, but people who avoid popular content/styles/views in favour of niche/indie/unusual content/styles/views to an extraordinary extent. As in strange in order to appear strange. Think cafe-going facial hair-growing sometimes somewhat stylish bike-riding (but not the practical kind of bike) strange people.
EDIT: Not sure if YT embeds count towards a word count. So I'm just going to flesh it out here, don't want to get mod wrath. I just had nothing more to say than that.
