I'm thinking of getting my first Pokemon game, what would you suggest?

The only Nintendo consoles I have are the DS (a regular one, not the 3D one) and a SNES.

I would prefer one with a decent tutorial about the whole 'collecting' thing (if they all do, it doesn't matter)

Thanks

Well, you don't have many options. For a DS I would personally say Platinum, but by far the best are the 3DS X and Y versions.

Get Soul Silver or Heart Gold. A very good place to jump in if you're new. Two regions, 16 gyms, largest amount of post-game content and so on.

well i was going to suggest X or Y but as you don't have a 3DS i'm going to agree with Dead Century, Hear gold or Soul silver are probably the best for a normal DS

They all more or less play the same way, are very accesible and feature tutorials. The updated versions of Gold/Silver on the DS should be good.

I would recommend any of the DS games, if you want a fresh start, Black and White are good for that since you can only use Pokemon from that region until after the main story unless you trade others in. Those are my personal favorite Pokemon games, just be sure to disregard the somewhat common complaint of Black and White's Pokemon, people like to give it a bad reputation for the trash bag and ice cream Pokemon alone.

Of course, Heart Gold/Soul Silver/Platinum are great games too if you want to get into the series. I would also recommend Black and White 2 if you end up really enjoying the first games.

Definitely Heart Gold or Soul Silver in my opinion but any of the DS Pokemon games are a great jumping off point as there wasn't any major changes between any of these games so they're rather consistent with each other. As for the one with the best tutorials, I can't remember due to rushing over almost all of them being a veteran Pokemon trainer I am but I can tell you that in every game the systems are explained well enough for anyone of any age to understand, being a family game.
The whole thing is an easy to learn fun to master deal so it's not hard to grasp.

Anyway, enjoy whichever one you pick they're all great.

I would probably suggest getting an emulator on your computer and playing Leaf Green or Fire Red. They are remakes of the first games so they play better (as much as I love Blue/Red, running shoes and Select taking me to the bike is a godsend). Then I would go with Heart Gold or Soul Silver on the DS because those two are remakes of the second generation and are just in general really expansive and awesome. If you get really bold then go for Diamond/Pearl which are 4th gen and Black/White which are 5th. But to start I would really really really recommend getting an emulator for your computer and doing Leaf Green or Fire Red. Other than that I would start with Heart Gold or Soul Silver.

Pretty sure you aren't supposed to advocate emulator games on he forums, so I won't be suggesting those.

If you are considering getting into Pokemon and tackling the actual *collecting*... It depends on how "personal you want your collection to be.

Gold/silver have a ton of 1st and 2nd generation Pokemon.

Diamond/Pearl/Platinum have all the 4th gen, with a mix of 1-3

Black/White/2's have all the 5th gen, with a mix of 1-4.

Any of them are a great place to start. If you have the older DS model, that had a GBA slot in the bottom, you can even pick up Fire/Leaf for 1st gen, and Ruby/Sapphire for 3rd.

Many players who love the collecting/breeding elements of the game take a certain satisfaction in passing their collection up from game to game, over the generations (hence the fervor over Pokebank).

You know, I would tell you. Get a 2DS and get Pokemon XY. Just do it. It you want to get into Pokemon, it's the first game I've played since the first ones, and it's just everything you'd want in a pokemon game.

Ignoring that, DS can play GBA games right? FireRed/LeafGreen. Go with the old classic, and after that HeartGold/SoulSilver since they have retreads of the Kanto region.

A SNES eh? Well... you could start at the beginning and get Red/Blue/Yellow and a Super Game Boy... :)

For DS, Soul Silver/Heart Gold are great! Couldn't recommend them more.

You really, really should consider investing in a 2DS and picking up Pokemon X/Y. They're really that good. And the online community/features of it are what everyone else is playing right now, so it'd be easy to find people to play with after you beat the main story. Barring that, it's difficult to go wrong with the main line series of Pokemon games. You can literally pick up any of them that you can currently play, and you'd be set.

Personally, I favor Black/White, although I can't disagree with anyone that suggests Heart Gold or Soul Silver.

Getting a legitimate copy of any pre-DS Pokemon games is a bit of a challenge due to the incredible abundance of bootleg cartridges. If you don't already own them don't go looking for GBA/Gameboy Pokemon since it will just frustrate you. Getting a bootleg is certainly not recommended - not just because they're illegal, they're also buggy and have a high failure rate.

As for the DS entries, it doesn't really matter which game you start with since they all follow the same basic story. I liked Heart Gold/Soul Silver most though. You get to go through both the Kanto and Johto gyms (16 vs the standard 8), have a pokemon sprite follow you around and it has some of the better minigames available. Black and White was a bit of a step back in my opinion though since you're going into it with no preconceptions, if you're going to like pokemon, you'll probably enjoy whatever entry you choose.
