however the last (and only) one I ever played was Runescape (hurr hurr) so I'm willing to try somthing different..somthing that looks nice,
and the secret world has got me interested
[i/]however....[/i]
theres a few reaons I'm unsure...first of all there always seems to be another MMO coming out that is eather advertised as a WOW killer (or not) and goes dead within a few months...
now obviously I can't ask if its going to go dead or not..but with TOR seemingly a ghost town..well
anyway question
[b/]have you played it?/ do you know anyone else whos played it?[/b]
[b/]is it any good?/how is it as far as MMO's go?[/b]
I am currently playing it as my MMO of choice, and I'm enjoying the questing and dungeons immensely. As of yet I haven't tried PvP so I can't speak for that part of the game.
What you should know before jumping in is that it is different, as in WAY different, from the standard MMO format. Sure, there are quests that are just "kill X of Y", but they make sense given the context. What most people are drawn in by however, are the investigation quests. For example, one early investigation quest gives you the clue "Time is the province of Gods and Kings. The hands of Time point towards truths written by Kings in the word of God" and nothing else. Based on this you need to figure out a password for a keypad that you have no idea where it is unless you've been paying attention earlier in the area. The game has a built in web-browser to make research simpler.
Combat-wise the game allows you to equip 7 active abilities and 7 passive abilites spread out over 2 weapons/magics (or all weapons/magics for the passives). The game puts a heavy emphasis on situational awareness with many avoidable heavy damage abilities used by some of the earliest enemies in the game. The "holy trinity" of tank/heal/DPS is pretty much still there, but a well put together character with synergy between his weapons/abilities will be able to do just as well as someone who specializes in just one thing.
There are no classes as such. Instead you can equip two weapons that have different abilities tied to them. Spend enough time in the game and you'll eventually be able to get every single ability for every weapon. Because of this there is no respec function, and you can heavily gimp your character if you don't know how to make a good build. If this happens, the best way to deal with it currently is to go back a zone or two and just repeat the quests in that zone, as that will let you grind out new ability points very rapidly.
Dungeon-wise there are 8 dungeons with 3 difficulty modes each, with the higher difficulties being the "PvE endgame". There are no raids in the current build.
There are also sabotage quests, which feature a stealth element, but they're basically "avoid the enemies incredibly narrow FoV without paying any attention to lighting or sound level, so they're a bit simplistic in my opinion.
Another oft-debated aspect is the cash shop in a subscription game. I am alright with it since it is only cosmetic items, but not everyone will be ok with this business practice. What I am not a big fan of is that the purchases made are not account-wide but rather locked to the character you bought the item on, but this is being brought up time and time again on the forums and hopefully Funcom will listen.
This is as much information about the game as I can think of off the top of my head, sorry for the long post

Don't feel bad, Runscape's quests were amazing!
It's just...the GRIND!
You've probably seen me in the other threads most likely and I would highly recommend it.
However, it requires a VASTLY different approach to gaming than most people normally expect.
In summary, the way you play the secret world is slow and methodical.
In order to achieve the best possible experience from the game, you have to think about almost everything and you have to ask the question why?
The Story:
To describe it as legendary would be an understatement. Ragnar Tornquist spent over 10 years crafting the wondrous work of art that is the story of The Secret World and it shows. I am not over-exaggerating when I say that almost Every. Single. Quest. Has reveals something important about the world around you. From the cinematics, to the lore and each players individual dialogue, and to the snarky/serious/mysterious reply you get at the end of most missions. Everything has the heart and soul of a true storyteller resonating from it.
As Ragnar himself described it, the game's story it like a magnificent puzzle. That puzzle has been shattered and it's pieces have been strewn across he world. It is up to the players to find those pieces and fit them together in a way that makes sense in order for them to truly understand what is happening to the world as we know it.
Finally, everything has ties to the real world. If you just Google some of the places, monsters, myths, or events mentioned in the game you are bound to at least some sort of real-life counterpart. It really does take place in OUR world. Both the characters and story reflect that.
The Combat:
The combat is an interesting subject. Yes, it is hot-key based and, yes, hot-keys are nothing new.
However, that is not where the beauty of the system lies.
Instead of being able to grab a gun and mow stuff down like you're some all-mighty hero of the people, you really have to think about your build. There are over 500 abilities and 9 different weapons. You have to choose two weapons and attempt to find ways in which 7 active and 7 passive abilities will synergize and build off of one another.
At the start, it may seem simple. However, be warned, the learning curve is steep.
A basic example of a synergy would be:
Actives:
Basic producer: Does X damage and builds a resource for each weapon. Medium Cast time.
Consumer A: Consumes 3 resources of weapon B and does x damage. Does X additional damage to afflicted targets. Long Cast time.
Consumer B: Consumes all resources from weapon A. Deals 3 hits doing X damage each. Instant, short cooldown.
Consumer C: Consumes all resources from weapon A. Throws a sticky grenade doing X amount of damage after 3 seconds. Instant, short cooldown.
Passives:
Passive A: Causes Basic Producer to Afflict the target with a DoT doing X damage over 8 seconds.
Passive B: Causes Consumer A to CRITICALLY HIT an Afflicted target 100% of the time.
Passive C: Whenever you apply an Afflicted you gain one stack of X buff.
Passive D: Whenever you critically hit, you build a counter. On your 5th counter, you do XX amount of damage to your target.
The remaining spots could be filled with other supporting abilities.
Every possible pair of weapons has synergies like this. You just have to look for them. Again, using your brain. Get used to changing up your build.
There is also active dodging and casting while moving. You will use this a lot later on. Many enemies in Blue Mountain and beyond will require you to move or be hurt, badly, as most enemies have their own interesting attacks.
The Questing:
The questing in TSW is interesting. You should focus on the quest you choose. The, when you send your report over mobile phone, look around. You will probably have another quest within 50 meters. Think of questing as a bunch of train tracks, and every quest giver that has multiple quests you can do as a fork in the tracks that will give you a tour of the entire zone by the time you travel down all the tracks. If a person has multiple quests, chances are, you will return to him thanks to some other quest you got. You can choose the quests you want, but if you run back to the place you got the quests from as if you were questing at a hub in WoW, you have the possibility of temporarily screwing up your questing experience. (It's not likely though, as most quests are repeatable after a while.)
Once in a while, though, you are let off in the middle of nowhere and have complete freedom of where to go next.
Almost all quests are unique and have a twist to them. I can guarantee that, if you pay attention to the story, even the kill quests won't seem nearly as bad.
Dungeons:
Lots of interesting story surrounding these. There are no trash mobs, most fights require basic strategy, and later on they can get nice and challenging. Not a lot to talk about, really.
PvP:
It seemed fine to me, then again, I don't really care for PvP.
and last but not least,
The Puzzles:
When it comes to puzzles, this game delivers. Some are easy, some are challenging, and others will FUCK YOUR BRAIN TILL' IT EXPLODES WITH ORGASMIC PLEASURE! No joke.
I can't spoil a lot, but if you like learning, you will cream yourself over these puzzles.
They will require everything from basic historical knowledge, to pop culture, to decoding Base 64. I have spent many entertaining hours on Wikipedia learning new and interesting things and loved every minute of it. Especially the feeling after you solve a puzzle. It's indescribable.
At my pace, (started the 29th, am now a bit more than halfway done) I should be done with the main story about 2-3 weeks after I started.
It's not a WoW killer, and was never advertised as such. Instead, the developers recognize that it's a niche game. This frees it from the restrictions of attempting to please everybody.
In the end this "begs the question" (my captcha), are you willing to learn?
PS: (Warning, Miniature Equine related)
I have an Illuminati Cabal called The Emergency Friendship Coalition and am looking for more members. It will be focused on Ponies and PvE, though everything is allowed. If you wish to learn more, visit my thread on the sites forums: http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=39739
hey, to be fair there were some quests that were actually pretty cool storywise
hmm well this actually does look really interesting...
dumb question about subscription fees....your charged in actual time rather than time spent in game arnt you?....I wouldnt like feeling preasured to play becaus Ive "payed my subscription"

Yeah, like most MMO's, you get a free 30 days after you buy the box then the subsequent months require $15 per month to play.
Personally, I bought the Lifetime subscriptions, so now I don't ever have to worry about paying a sub fee again and can play at my leisure. (It's $250 total for that, though.)
Also, the cash shop IS only cosmetic. There is absolutely no way that anything you buy will ever affect your standing in game.
You could also try the game for 24 hours if you get somebody who has bought it to give you their buddy key.
Imma go poke my best mate about maybe trying it together. It sounds fun. We used to run a successful guild together on wow if we can play on your server mayhaps we will join you.

NOO! Don't join the dirty 'lumies. We Templars kicked their arses out of Europe, and we'll kick them out of the New World too given enough time. Plus, we have the fanciest uniforms!

Fancy, sure, but obvious. Guess who stole a precious artifact right from under your nose, that's right, US! Right out of London! You say a good offence is the best defense.
Incorrect.
A good offense is a good offense.
Sorry Templar's, but the fact that we practically control the Internet means that we will be the victors in the New World Order!

Bah, the internet is no match for a proper hammer to the face. And we will find you, after all, we've been rooting out secrets since long before you even existed
You could also have them email you a zipped or .Rar version of the patcher's .exe
It's downloadable right off of the account page.

Yeah, 100 year old secrets then, 100 year old secrets now.
Your organization is a century in the past. Go ahead and go extinct already, I'm sure our future archaeologists will have a fun time digging up your fossils.
Also, hammers are old school. If you try anything like that you'll end up with our puppet, the CoV, breathing down your stuck-up starched suit collars.

Our organization being old simply means that we know how to survive. It takes willpower, loyalty and discipline. You 'lumies will wind up digging your own grave with the constant power hunger and scheming. Also, I'd like to see the CoV try to give us a hard time. There are benefits to being the largest, such as unrivaled military might. And hammers being old school doesn't matter when you're wearing bulletproof armor, just makes it easier to pulp your insides while you can't do anything about it.

Well, Dragon do have a very... interesting intro... which includes a nine-tailed fox demon going down on your character while a halfnaked demon warlord watches... In order to give you a vision
It actually looked kinda interesting and I hear it's pretty good. I wouldn't mind playing it but I am completely thrown off by the Subscription fee and initial price and cash shop. It is just too much, im not paying all of that even if it has an incredible story and good combat.
Well I think it's one of the best mmo's at the market
it got great quests, which really makes fun solving them, a great story, and so on
got it since the beta, because I bought it at mmoga for a great deal - even if I have to pay for the game every month though~
The combat is awful, so its only good for people who like it's puzzle based quests. The story seems pretty good but its presented as lengthy cutscenes. I'd rather have conversations like TOR so I can read and skip ahead. And as Dandark said its a total cash grab.
