This is meant to generate discussion, so friggin talk already, you crazy escapists.

PREEMPTIVE EDIT: to all the smart people who caught my ambiguousness: it's Bungie's masterpiece. as in, their best work. their magnum opus. quit nitpicking.

I'm getting sick and tired of people hating on Halo. It's sort of become the cool thing to do now, as if hating on Bungie's masterpiece turns you into a video game hipster or something. Yes, the game has cheesy, color-coded bad guys. Yes, it has floaty physics, no cover-based gameplay to speak of, and recharging health (which I am normally not a fan of at all.) So why do I like it?

Because I don't come into the game expecting a realistic experience.

Let's dial this back a bit, shall we? The biggest gripes (aside from online play, which I'll get to in a minute) are just what I mentioned before. The game comes under fire because it's not realistic.

...I'm sorry, what? You're playing a game about a super soldier fighting space aliens! Just how realistic do you want this game to be? People get pissed because the melee does so much damage in online play, but think about it: Master Chief is ungodly strong without his suit (cybernetic enhancements). With it, he's hercules. If two of these guys got in a fistfight, how long do you think it would last?

The gameplay mechanics are polished to a mirror sheen, are easy to get your head around, and have a surprising amount of depth. The formula works, is what I'm getting at. The melee is a balancing thing. CoD4 has a one-hit kill knife and CoD5 has a similar bayonette, right? That's extremely unrealistic right there, but no one thinks twice. The game is fun and that's the point. Game is supposed to equal Fun, yes?

Now don't peg me a fanboy, because I'm not. I played the hell outta CoD4, TF2 (and orange box in general), and RSV2. Those respectively are Halo's biggest rival, a thinking man's shooter, and an extremely cover-based shooter.

I loved them all. Including halo.

Moving on; online play.

I have only one thing to say on this. There is a casual audience on halo, and there is a hardcore. Just like every other online shooter out there. Fratboys and ten-year-olds abound on CoD4, RSV2, and TF2 servers as well (again, been there, been shouting obscenities from).

They're different games, they're all fun. Some people hate some, some people hate others. It's a matter of opinion, so please, please stop saying that it's a bad game. It doesn't make you sound cool or game-savvy, it makes you sound elitist and dickish.

Seriously, people.

EDIT: halo is NOT my favorite game. That spot would be reserved for Morrowind, the King of All Games. I'm just miffed at all the ranting.

EDIT NUMERO DOS: and please don't pull the opinion card. i'm not bashing anyone's negative opinion on the game... read the entire thing if you're going to comment, please.

Same here, buddy. I'm getting tired of all the Halo hate i've seen. I've played first Halo on my trusty PC,and despite memories getting blurry,it was pretty okay. Not better-than-sex-world-rockin' wonder, but playable and even enjoyable.

I guess it's nastiest of Halo fans themselves who are to blame for such enormous backlash, but it's really disproportionate.

I'm tired of Halo fan boys
Halo haters
Halo threads
Halo ad's
Halo rings
"Halo" by Machine Head
MLG Halo players
Halo Electronics
"Halo" by Beyonce
Jesus's Halo
and people who say Halo is over rated

[small] Here's hoping one day people will shut the fuck up about Halo and either enjoy it or don't talk about it. Also thanks to miracleofsound for MOAR suggestions[/small]

I concur. Halo is by no means perfect, but I'll be damned if it isn't fun.

And be careful what you say about liking Halo and Team Fortress 2 or Half Life 2. A guy threatened to stab me in the throat for saying that I did.

I'm tired of the Halo-Hater-Haters.

And the haters.

I just hate anyone who bashes an opinion. If people hate Halo, let them. If they don't, let them.

Yeah I agree too, entirely. I think it is very unfair the way people bash Halo and all things with the title left right and center out of some strange twisted grudge. I do genuinely agree with you, but I do like to think there is a distinction and people who merely do not like the game are entitled to their opinion... it's the people who openly bash it with an aggressive streak that is obviously aimed at upsetting people who I have issues with.
I love Halo, always have and always will and I agree with you entirely that people who think they are cool for hating it are just pretentious and I also agree with the whole thing about the fanbase as well.
Honestly... thanks for saying all that for me.

Whenever people talk about Halo, they're almost always either talking about how much it sucks or they are talking about the people that say it sucks.

I'm sick of that. All of it. Very rarely do you see a Halo thread that's actually talking about the actual game.

I'm a PS3 fan boy and the hate is annoying me, but not quite as much as the PS3 hate. All console/game haters should be locked away off the internet or limited to 4chan.

I am tired of anyone who is RAWR RAWR RAWR on any video game. This is simply because, it's a fucking video game and you don't have to play it. You don't have to talk about it. You don't have to watch anyone play it. You don't have to watch television ads for you. You don't have to do anything that you're bitching about.

That's it.
Pretty much what I was going to say. To be more specific, though, I wish the bloody console/platorm wars would stop, they're each as fun as the last, and if you don't enjoy something because it's not on your favourite machine then try and lighten up, it's just a game, desgined for being enjoyed.

Yeah I'm sick of that, I've borrowed Halo 3 off me mate for about a week now and I love it but some of the people on XBox Live say it sucks and I just think "How?"

There's nothing wrong with people not liking Halo, or any game for that matter, if they genuinely just don't like the game. Thats fine, nothing against that, if we all liked the same thing we'd all be bored off our tits.

What I hate is when people hate on the game just for the sake of hating something because it's popular. Then acting as if they're some pained oppressed martyr, being bullied by the "sheep" that actually like Halo. It's popular for a reason.

Then there's the people that hate games because "microsoft sux PS3 ftw!!!!!!" or vice versa... They're just candidates for forced sterilisation.

Edit: Also, the Halo series has some of the best soundtracks ever. In my opinion, of course :p

Second Edit: Completely agree with the OP's Morrowind point :)

You know that's actually a fair point, you do rarely actually see a genuine Halo thread that has any correlation to the actual game itself instead of just the fanbase/haters tearing each other apart.
I suppose we are somewhat preoccupied and unable to get past what we consider the 'major issue' and seem to have forgotten how to just pick up and play.

I don't like Halo not because it's "not realistic"; I don't like it because it's generic and run-of-the-mill. It doesn't seem to have an identity of its own: it'S like Star Trek meets Half-Life without anything new brought to the table. I don't hate it either, but I've had more fun playing Timesplitters 3 than I had playing Halo.
