This is meant to generate discussion, so friggin talk already, you crazy escapists.
PREEMPTIVE EDIT: to all the smart people who caught my ambiguousness: it's Bungie's masterpiece. as in, their best work. their magnum opus. quit nitpicking.
I'm getting sick and tired of people hating on Halo. It's sort of become the cool thing to do now, as if hating on Bungie's masterpiece turns you into a video game hipster or something. Yes, the game has cheesy, color-coded bad guys. Yes, it has floaty physics, no cover-based gameplay to speak of, and recharging health (which I am normally not a fan of at all.) So why do I like it?
Because I don't come into the game expecting a realistic experience.
Let's dial this back a bit, shall we? The biggest gripes (aside from online play, which I'll get to in a minute) are just what I mentioned before. The game comes under fire because it's not realistic.
...I'm sorry, what? You're playing a game about a super soldier fighting space aliens! Just how realistic do you want this game to be? People get pissed because the melee does so much damage in online play, but think about it: Master Chief is ungodly strong without his suit (cybernetic enhancements). With it, he's hercules. If two of these guys got in a fistfight, how long do you think it would last?
The gameplay mechanics are polished to a mirror sheen, are easy to get your head around, and have a surprising amount of depth. The formula works, is what I'm getting at. The melee is a balancing thing. CoD4 has a one-hit kill knife and CoD5 has a similar bayonette, right? That's extremely unrealistic right there, but no one thinks twice. The game is fun and that's the point. Game is supposed to equal Fun, yes?
Now don't peg me a fanboy, because I'm not. I played the hell outta CoD4, TF2 (and orange box in general), and RSV2. Those respectively are Halo's biggest rival, a thinking man's shooter, and an extremely cover-based shooter.
I loved them all. Including halo.
Moving on; online play.
I have only one thing to say on this. There is a casual audience on halo, and there is a hardcore. Just like every other online shooter out there. Fratboys and ten-year-olds abound on CoD4, RSV2, and TF2 servers as well (again, been there, been shouting obscenities from).
They're different games, they're all fun. Some people hate some, some people hate others. It's a matter of opinion, so please, please stop saying that it's a bad game. It doesn't make you sound cool or game-savvy, it makes you sound elitist and dickish.
Seriously, people.
EDIT: halo is NOT my favorite game. That spot would be reserved for Morrowind, the King of All Games. I'm just miffed at all the ranting.
EDIT NUMERO DOS: and please don't pull the opinion card. i'm not bashing anyone's negative opinion on the game... read the entire thing if you're going to comment, please.
