Good. Here's to hoping Youtube will do the same.
Don't get your hopes up. YouTube's reputation is so widespread that people who aren't internet goers are aware of how bad they are. My grandmother, who struggles to access emails from her desktop, wondered why a newspaper article was browsing opinions on Youtube. Didn't know about 4chan, though.

I was on this topic in the WW, so I may as well say it here.

I didn't know the IMDB had forums, let alone they had been running since well before the Escapist existed. This is also the only case I know of where the comment sections got so bad they were shut down explicitly for that reason.

I don't think I've seen seen so many advocate for removing peoples ability to comment on stuff.
Frightening.

People will be people everywhere and anywhere they can comment so going by that notion alone nobody should be allowed to express themselves on the net ever again..

You always have to take the good with the bad and if you can't refrain from being baited that's on you.

I'd rather have chan-style commenting than being silenced or kept from partaking of others opinions and views.

Can we work on taking down GameFAQs next? It's a site that doesn't punish death threats but will give you a days suspension for posting something in the opening cinematic of the game.
That is the reason why I haven't been to GameFaqs forums since 2008. It got to the point of nearly everyone being assholes and all of the good people leaving. I'm sad that the forums are being removed, and had some good times, but the board started to be infested with people arguing over dumb shit, a whole bunch of OT discussions (in the VG Boards of all places), and even I barely commented anymore. Or if I did, one user would go out his way say ho much Platinum games sucked, and how anybody liked anything about them wouldn't know good games. Though most people chose to ignore him.

So is the Escapist gonna make a subforum to lure the IMDB people onto here like what they did with the Bioware forum?

I use the database frequently but never bothered with the forums. There's maybe one good thread every other twenty and they all devolve into stupid name-calling anyway.
That's been my experience. Using the site for the information and occasionally seeing Youtube level of commentary and chuckling. Its really amusing how they think their interpretation of a film is the definitive view everyone should adhere to and how unaware they are of how shrill they sound.

I will not miss it but I get the argument to allow it to continue.

I saw that a few days ago too, and I totally understand why. I have posted there a few times, but even from the start I wondered if it was a good idea to have a board for every single film and TV series in existence, as it would be impossible to moderate them all. Most of them inevitably turned into ghost towns haunted only by roving trolls screaming at nothing that the work in question sucks beyond all belief. I try to be creative when I post, but a lot of the time I ended up just explaining blatantly obvious things that people missed which they called 'plot holes'.

I made a 'farewell thread' for Batman Begins celebrating it by quoting lines in the final days before everything gets shut down, but haven't got much response yet.

Stupidest line that I remember? For repeated occurrence and variation, probably the 'Marvel = Kiddie, DC = Mature Adults and Marvel films only get good ratings because Disney bribes reviewers'. The Dark Knight might have good ratings, but its board was a cesspit worse than Gotham city the last time I dared check. It's always worth a good chuckle when someone tries posting or reviewing on a popular movie board pretending to be their conception of an 'auteur critic' who only likes 'the classics', and considers everything else made since 1990 to be 'hipster trash for idiot children'. Saw that a lot on the Lego Movie boards and any comic book movie.

I used to frequent the Passion of The Christ forums on IMDB a lot. It was a battleground for hardcore atheists and fervent creationists, and it was amazing just to watch. Some really interesting arguments went on there.

I also had some other interactions, usually involving movies in the horror genre.

I... don't think I'll miss the comments section, when all is said and done. It felt poisonous- lots of really crass and ignorant shit, and petty childish behavior, and always with these deleted threads/posts, and you just knew they were foul, like, youtube foul. But some poor schmo, or an army of them, had to go in and delete those rants/attacks... and there were a LOT of threads there. Sounds like it was a rough scene to moderate.

Just came across this thread and thought I'd post about a great replacement that I've been using: MovieChat.org [https://moviechat.org]

They basically replicated the IMDB forums. There's individual boards for every movie, tv show, actor, etc. It also looks like MovieChat saved and transferred over all of the posts from the old IMDb forums. No idea how they did this, but I can look up the most obscure movies and find posts from years ago.

While I am glad that the forums from IMDB have been take to another site, I am not interested at this point. And it seems they still got more of the same assholes in the video game forum. If I ever decide to put my user name in, I am striclty just going to go to the movie forums.
