What are some big immersion breakers you've found in games?

Mine would be just recently, playing dragon age
(Download New Content) I guess I could try and help

Hmm...it takes a ton to break me of my immersion. Pretty much only outside forces have ever accomplished that; even stuff like my taking screenshots and notes during a visual novel hasn't distracted me all that much.

I think it would take absolutely terrible voice acting to break my immersion. Stuff like during Devil May Cry 2, or Baten Kaitos (first one only).

The worst immersion breaker is death. I'm instantly taken out of a game when I die, and in games that try to be immersive and yet kill me repeatedly any idea of immersion is lost.

This really... it's not like i'm not aware that i'm playing a game anyways.
I don't need to forget that i'm a mortal human without magic powers/swords/lazor guns in to enjoy an immersive game.

Nothing in game really...but out of the game. "Sam (my dog) down, out of the way, no stop scratching, yes you can come up, lie down....LIE DOWN!" During this exchange I usually die if I forget to pause.

For me, it's bad dialogue/voice acting. SOTN is a good example of this. It's a great game, but every time there's a cut scene, I have to mute it.

It's called "Gzatzor you has got Achievement skreen thing"
And trophies nothing is breaking the immersion more than an achievement that is called "the bigger they are" when you kill a giant... giant that took you 30 min hardcore gaming.

Achievements tend to be immersion breakers.

Being unable to step over something small in a game, like walk up a step. Or running into invisible walls. I HATE invisible walls.

Loading screens. I know, I'm impatient, but as Shamus Young has said [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/comics/stolen-pixels/5124-Stolen-Pixels-11-Finally], it's like waiting in traffic: you can't get out, and you can't do anything else. It kills.

Also, when my PC starts to mysteriously slow down and degrade the graphics. That may or may not be the game's fault.

I'm going to quote Graham Stark of Unskippable and say this. "I hate you so much right now!"

I perfectly agree with that.

OT: In Kingdom Hearts II especially, they took quite a few steps to make the game much less immersive. A lot of the "helpful" gimmicks got onto me fast. They put these little marquees in there that told you what to do. "Defeat the mysterious enemy!" "Destroy the ship!" And all that jazz. And those marquees hung at the top of the screen throughout the whole dang fight, making you very aware the whole time that you were playing a video game. Also, the random supermoves from the quick time events which take all control away from the player all to make Sora spin around and do some crazy stunts was not only immersion breaking, but quite frankly insulting.

Also, the little changes to the way the game flowed got to me as well. In the first game, whenever Sora walked through a door, it showed a one or two second clip of him opening the door. In the second game, whenever Sora changed area, this cartoony black circle zoomed in and out of the shot to show the transition, and the design of the circle changed to fit the theme of the world. Now, I am aware that it was probably done to make another connection between the Disney style and the Final Fantasy style. But I really don't think it was worth the significant immersion loss. Rather than feeling like you're entering a room, you feel much more like you are changing areas.

ALSO, they changed the interface for the gummi ship map. In the first game, even when you used the warp drive to instantly arrive at the next world, at least you felt like you put some distance between where you were and where you were going. In KH2, you just navigate your little gummi ship avatar to the "obstacle" that is preventing you from getting to the new world. The way it all happens is just so...stupid. It doesn't feel like "you're opening a new path," as the game tells you. It feels exactly like you're playing a little minigame in order to qualify for that world.

And after you unlock the world, it's even worse. Then you just have to move that stupid avatar of a ship over to the world, click, and you're there. It makes the whole universe feel like evertying is connected by nothing but minigames and a generic interface.

And don't even get me started on Atlantica.
