When you find your self one at one with the game, the environment being right and the game being smooth as stone.

Dead Space
Mass Effect 2
Portal

are all fine examples of this.

Immersion is me going to the Lake District, and swearing that I'm actually walking around Cyrodiil (Oblivion) instead. It looks just like it.

Immersion is me looking for Portal-able surfaces whilst on the train to work.

Immersion is when you and the game are the only things that exist and any one time. Immersion can only really be achieved perfectly if alone. I get it a lot in Bad Company 2 multiplayer, and also Fallout 3 if I get the spare time to play.
I dunno about BC2. I don't find respawns very immersing.

Immersion is when you plan to touch yourself but have to download porn so you play a game to kill time but then lose track of time and forget you even planned to touch yourself that night.

Scratch that, thats just my Saturday Night :p

Immersion is when you spend 2 hours hiding in a box waiting for a friend to walk by and then you stalk while remaining in the box.

Oh High school, how i miss thee.

When a ghoul hits you from behind on Fallout 3 and you actually scream a little and drop the controller.

Good point. I imagine out of the 60ish hours I've played it I've spent 80% of that time loooking at the bloody spawn screen...

Metroid Prime and Amnesia:Dark Descent

The last one is not only the best horror game of 2010 but also one of the most atmospheric games, ever...

it's when you've been playing Assassins Creed and you start looking up at buildings to find the fastest way up. (This actually happened to me).

Or maybe it's when you almost have a fear enduced heart attack when your brother suddenly comes into the room while you're playing the Amnesia: The Dark Desent demo.

Immersion is when stay up WAY too late playing online FPSs, and then freak out when I see people around without Gamertags or PSN IDs over their heads and are convinced that they're my enemies and are here to kill me.

It's the reason that people usually look to RPGs and such when they think of immersion. If you do poorly you may have to reload a few saves. If you do well, then you will almost always feel like you are the character that you are playing. It's a wonderful feeling, and I love Fallout 3 for it. With appropriate mods, that game may as well call itself Post Apocalypse Survival Simulator.

I'm not sure you understand what immersion actually means...

Immersion is when you're stuck in a dungeon in Zelda and you start to hyperventilate, because you think you can't get out.

Although, to be perfectly honest: I've never been fully immersed in a game ever. I don't know what keeps me away, but there is just something...

Immersion is when I see a couple of bricks that are sticking out from a wall and the first thing I think is to climb them.

Immersion is when your friend walks past without noticing you and you try to hit the square button on a nonexistent PS3 controller to do a stealth kill.

Immersion is when you see a pile of bobby pins and feel the need to collect them because you need them to pick locks.

Immersion is when you see a barrel and trying to click on it so you can get a hint coin.

Immersion is when I feel how the main character would on-screen.

I was playing Uncharted 2 today and had to swing on rickety pipes high above the ground. Two words repeated themselves constantly through my mind while performing the feat: 'Oh, fuck'.

Immersion is when you hold someone underwater, and a faint smile crosses your lips as her movements grow erratic, her struggling weakens, and finally, her futile attempts to breathe end.

Oh, you were talking about immersion in games. My mistake. System Shock 2. Still the creepiest game I've ever played. 2 AM with headphones on and the lights off. Yikes.
