IMO, Bastion's not that great.

Congratulations. If you want to write a review please put it in the user review section.

As a general rules on one cares about an individual's opinion of a game (i.e. why people flame all the I hate halo or I live Half Life threads) but If you write a full review then it comes accost as more professional and worth listening to.

and to SlayerN's statement: "not uniqe inn content of the story" IN WHAT GAME/BOOK/MOVIE HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OR SEEN A STORY MORE UNIQE!!! the world has been destroyed (essentially), the characters are lovable and mysterious.
The Dark Crystal, The Neverending Story, The Dying Earth books (not so much lovable as hugely cynical, but you gotta give it credit for founding D&D's magic system), Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chrono Trigger, am I leaving much out? Gotta be plenty more, but you get the point. It's not that unique, you just don't expose yourself to a whole lot of stories. I'd consider handing in my "I like storytelling" badge if I were you.

EDIT: Oh yeah. THE LAND BEFORE TIME. That too.

Seems like some people have got what I was going for (especially The Super Action Squad of One). Iunno, it's just that I haven't heard anyone call Bastion other than absolutely fantastic so I felt a more moderate opinion needed to be heard. Note that I never called the game bad; I just think it's an average beat-em-up with above average presentation. It had the same aesthetic appeal as Braid and Limbo, but unlike those, the actual "game" part was comparatively dull.

Bastion had nice colorful art and the narrator idea was good but I have grown tired of indie games distinguishing themselves by using a different art style while the gameplay is nothing amazing.

How many platformers have we seen with blocky, worst than NES, graphics? Games that look like they were made for the Atari 2600 like the bit.trip games. It's like the developers sat back and said, let's make a really ugly, blocky platformer game. Then people go nuts because of it's "unique" style not remembering that there were plenty of blocky games in the early 80's and if it weren't an indie game..this shit wouldn't fly.

Just things that have bugged me for awhile. I don't think indie devs should get a free pass on any aspect of a game just because they are indie. Ok, rant over.

Anyway, Bastion was fun for a few hours but after that it just didn't offer much at all. When I get in the mood to destroy everything while gripping tight a controller, I take control of Kratos.

It definitely had problems. Linearity and variety were among them. There were more than enough different weapons and abilities, but not enough varied enemies to use them on. Combat is fun, but lacks any real kind of strategy. Just mash away at the enemies, dodge when they attack. Block/counter if you're feeling fancy and there's nothing about to attack from behind. Oh and use a ranged weapon if the enemy's out of reach. That's...really all there is to it. Special skills can add a little more strategy, but only with certain skills against certain enemies, and you can only equip one skill at a time, so....yeah.

The "follow the path" linearity was a missed opportunity to allow some more explanation and narrator-delivered information about the world that was destroyed, but it's understandable why it's as linear as it is. The dynamic narrator must have been difficult and resource intensive enough to implement as it is.

Still, for all its problems, Bastion really is a special game. In fact, the most celebrated games of all time have more problems than Bastion. Silent Hill 2 and SotC both control like fat, clunky, uncooperative ass, but they're very important games. The same goes for Bastion; the things that make it special excuse and obscure its shortcomings.
Can you really call the combat in Bastion simplistic? Walk barely any two players had the same exact weapon loadout as the combinations of weapons. upgrades and drinks made it so that the game supported multiple playstyles. Some people went spear and hammer, others went pure guns and explosives. some players favored raw damage while others favored utility. It all blended itself to a very unique experience for everyone with how they pursued upgrades and with how challenging the made the game for themselves through the idol system.

Stop the presses! Some dude on the internet doesn't like this generally well acclaimed game! Seriously though, so what if you didn't like it? Do you want a pat on the back or something?

I didn't really like Bastion either, the "narrator" doesn't tell the story as much as he does just state the obvious and the combat can be summed up as "just keep throwing shitloads of enemies at the player"

My advice to anyone reading this? Wait for either Diablo III, or (if you're absolutely determined to get something indie) Torchlight 2.

That narrator needed to shut up. I played through to the end, but considered terminating my Bastion early many MANY times just because of that annoying narrator.

I knew I wouldn't enjoy it from seeing some videos online, therefore I didn't buy it. I always do extensive research before I buy anything for myself.

I played about half an hour of it at my sister's house, and frankly I didn't really enjoy it. While it looks, sounds and handles beautifully, it was fairly uninteresting and didn't hook me at all.
