I've always just used Default Shepard as he appears on the cover of both games, Mainly because all of the custom faces look horrible, but partly because I think the Default Shepard is very well done, sexy and fits all the dialog he delivers perfectly. I have also developed a major man-crush on him over the last two games, so there is no way I'm changing him in ME3.

OT: I don't think they need to have a reason for it in the game itself. It would be just fine if you got to re-customize him before the game and but the game still acts like you always looked like that.

Simple, just let those who want to change their faces do so in the beginning, and let those who don't want to go straight into the game.

Chances are importers won't want to change anything, and those who do simply can without having to sit through a fucking long-ass unskippable cut-scene.

I think they should let players reconstruct their Shepard's face if they want to. They don't need to worry about a justification. Heck, they didn't really do so in ME2. Every character recognizes you immediately as Commander Shepard, despite supposedly changing your face. ME2 treated whatever facial changes you made like it was what your Shepard originally looked like.

I'd be content with a way to just change the hairstyle of my Shep.

Theres been a distracting flicker in the parting of her hair for 2 games now. It looked like they fixed it for a couple of hours in Mass Effect 2 but then it returned in full force for the rest.
