I was wondering what in-game spells/abilities/skills people have remembered for being, well, awesome. Something that you wish you could do all the time in every game ever.

For me, it's definitely Lynx's ForeverZero from Chrono Cross. It was the coolest thing in the world back in the day, and I love it still.

I mean, look at it.

Okay, yes, that was rather awesome. I was under the impression that Chrono Cross had graphics on about the same level as Trigger, for some reason.

As for me... grappling wire from JC2, I'd say. The trick arrows in the Thief series are nice too.

For something less subtle, the Terror Stars in Galactic Civilizations 2. I've got a couple screenshots, if anyone wants to see.

The xenomorphs ability to climb on any wall.

God, how much more fun would that make every shooter?

Atleast, I feel that it would be an improvment...

Using the sword that summoned Megiddo in Golden Sun: The Lost Age. Just drop a meteor on all your foes!

Yes. Excellent idea, though I was none too fond of the game as a whole. The Predator's invisibility and heat vision (not in the eye ray sense, sadly) was great too.

Is it just me, or are all the most well-liked abilities of the utility variety? Movement-based, slow-mo, invisibility, that sort of thing. Just something I noticed.

Edit: Terror Stars are an exception, because they're so absurdly over the top that you can't help but spam them.

I liked the game just fine, but compared to AVP 2 xenos, the newer ones have broken legs.

I mean, the could jump literally 100 plus feet at become artiliary shells when need be.

And now that you mention it, I do like abilities that change how I move, like the Reach jetpack.

Personally, I prefer Ark.

As nice as that is, walking on walls/jumping doesn't compare to walking on the ceiling.

The first time I saw the effects of a Concrete Donkey dropped on a closely gathered team of enemy Worms.

It was haunting, beautiful, and utterly hilarious.

The thing that has stuck with me the most in my video game career that's an ability... not some gadget or special move but some sort of power that the player character gets.... is the teleportation ability from Zone of the Enders 2. Why? Because it worked RIGHT. I liked how when you used it sometimes you'd be upside down and there's be that brief snap of motion sickness as the camera tried to catch up with you as a dozen robots were trying their best to blow you to pieces. I liked the sound effect that went with it and the flash of light. It had a 1950's "E gads I've been teleported!" while flawlessly blending it with something that would have been at home in Top Gun. It didn't just feel instant, it felt FAST. It's one thing to be chilling and then just poof somewhere else. It's something else entirely to phase out of reality and be regurgitated back into existence in the middle of a giant robot laser brawl.

Being able to call in a carpet bomb, tank and all manner of explosive tools at will in Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.

Reading people's minds in Destroy All Humans!.

The "Raid II" tactic in Dynasty Tactics 2.

From Dynasty Warriors;

Pang Tong's musou.
Yuan Shao's true musou and C1 attack.
Ma Chaos's mounted attacks.
Gan Ning's musou.
Xu Huang's helicopter spin...of doom.
Zhen Ji's kick...of doom.
Meng Huo's C1.

Running on buildings in Prototype was the most fun part in the whole game. God I wish I could do that in real life.

In Arcanum, there is a spell called Tempus Fugit.
You can slow the time in the entire world.
Ah yes, Arcanum. Never bothered with time magic, but I always liked the spell description. Haste the party and simultaneously slow down the entire world.

Of course, we both know it's the game's second best spell, after teleport.

Edit: Or minmaxing so you can summon demons when you first get to Tarant. Or, better yet, when you meet Lukan (who just so happens to be the best first "boss" ever.)

On from the Orks in Warhammer 40k: Retribution, if only because of the name;
Aimin'? What's dat?

Clearly, they fire so many bullets in such a spray it causes suppresion on their enemies.

Either that or from the same game and again because of the name;
Let the Galaxy Burn!

Blazblue: Bang Shishigami's: "FU RIN KA ZAN!"

A real man only activates his super mode for the good of others!

Morrowind: "Levitate."

(seriously Oblivion, what do i care if there's a law against levitate? If I murder whole towns I obviously have no respect for the law and if I'm the noble hero I think I should use every advantage I can to see to it that the world is not overrun by demonic forces of evil!!! PFFFFFT. A law...)

Fable: Slow time.

Basically tempus fugit from arcanum but without the limitation of not working against industrial engineers.

Various SNK games: Plasma generation.

Both Geese and Rock Howard can make plasma at will and manipulate it into shapes to attack their enemies and to augment their fighting. I want that power!

Bullet Drop, on Prototype. Doing it from the top of the Empire States Building is...satisfying.

...I then tried to do it in another game.

...Didn't work out.

Also, demo-charges on Red Faction Guerilla. So many ways to use explosives, so little time!

Destroy All Humans had some great abilities, reading minds, psychokinesis, and Free love, an ability that lets you get inside a hippie chick in broad daylight without the police noticing.
Either these, or any of the support powers you see in RTS games. I'd love to be able to pull a stealth bomber out my pocket and annihilate someone from a long distance.
