Second Sight.

ALright, it wasn't an ability you could use, it was a story ability, but still it was one mind-fuck of a thing.

But if you won't accept that, then it was the ability to lift up enemies and wave them around with your psychic abilities.

I kinda wanted to be able to do this when I was little:

Used to run around the garden with my arms out-stretched.

To me it would be using the hook shot ability from any Legend of Zelda game. That item/weapon is so awrsome to use!
The Hookshot is fun, yes. I'm not a fan of LoZ, but that was good.

I prefer the Ivy Whip in Terraria, though. And, of course, JC2's grappling wire tops them both.

I don't know if I'd consider it an ability but the auto-translate feature from FFXI is really awesome.

For months after I stopped playing I found myself still pressing tab half way through words hoping to auto complete them.

Writing "Galaka Sausage Penta Thrust Inside Mithra Fun Hole" Just isn't as effective without it.

I was wondering what in-game spells/abilities/skills people have remembered for being, well, awesome. Something that you wish you could do all the time in every game ever.

For me, it's definitely Lynx's ForeverZero from Chrono Cross. It was the coolest thing in the world back in the day, and I love it still.

I mean, look at it.

This reminds me of every finishing move in Final Fantasy, ever.

Dual-Wielding in Halo 2 and Modern Warfare 2. Because when ever you join the military, YOU BECOME AMBIDEXTROUS.
That's nothing. In Duke Nukem 3D you can kick with both feet at the same time [http://youtu.be/OByKugyIu4c]. I'm sincerely hoping they enable it in DNF as well.

The ingame ability I remember most fondly, however, is the use of Dementation in dialogues in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines. There's nothing like convincing a person that you're not yourself but in fact their old pet turtle, Shelly [http://youtu.be/HcYiSBhxLEM].

the fact that seemingly everyone in the world of Tamriel has the ability to heal minor wounds on themselves.
Imagine the implications of this...................you will never have to suffer small cuts ever again.
Use the spell enough and you can heal anything at all.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood - Throwing a massive two-handed sword overhand (like competative axe-throwing) to impale your target in the face. Surprised me the first time I did it, and it was beyond cool to witness.

Prototype - Except the default consume animation which just felt odd, every one of the transformations and weapon abilities look awesome. (Armor + Blade is my favorite of the bunch.)

Crysis - All of the suit's capabilities, switched on the fly. My first playthrough I stuck to stealth as much as possible, but my second time around I tried to switch it up as much as possible.
[Stealth Mode] Sneak in. [Maximum Strength] ::punch sentry to the next block:: Jump onto roof. [Maximum Armor] Start plinking a patrol with my weapon to get their attention. [Maximum Speed] Leap across rooftops to rear of compound. [Stealth Mode] Nind the now to find the next sucker to send flying.

And I can't forget grabbing my first sentry by the throat and switching to Strength Mode to squeeze the life out him. (add in Thermal Gogles for to watch his body heat dissipate to background temp)

The only thing that really sticks out from the Final Fantasy series that looks very similar is Ultima in FFX. However, ForeverZero has a certain charm in its presentation. The description says "All things become eternal nothingness." Furthermore, the sheer fact that you only have it for a small portion of the game makes it a very bittersweet ability. The reason why I like it so much is because it would never outstay its welcome, but does not even get the opportunity to do so.

Speaking of Xenosaga, I'm a huge fan of anything Jr. did in Part 1, ever. I stopped playing the series about halfway through Part 2, but I'm definitely itching to marathon all 3 games if the opportunity presents itself.

3 is the same thing as 2/1 but with an even more impressively complicated pseudo-mythological backstory and feature film length CG sequences. That being said, I'm not knocking it. It's a fun story if all you wanna do is blow things up on cue and then watch a subtitled movie. Often this is in fact all that I want to do.

Personally, I prefer Ark.

O.O

I'll have to go with that. Overkill much?
You wish. By the endgame (and you only get it if you completed the chocobo digging sidequest, saved a previous boss drop, then beat an optional boss in the final dungeon and pay it a bunch to fuse the two items into one accessory), it does... oh, I don't know. Maybe 7000 damage if you're pretty lucky?

With many setups, Freya, Steiner, Zidane or Amarant (the four melee characters, and Zidane is more of a thief character), just hitting someone with a sword/spear/claw will deal 9999 damage.

So yes, it's actually rather weak. Weaker than stabbing someone.

I never got it, so I didn't know that. Looks cool though, gotta give it that.

I remember 30-minute long sequences in Part 1. They outdid themselves in P3...?

Thanks for the recommendation.

Oh yes, certainly looks neat. If you want truly spectacular overkill, though, look no further than Galactic Civilizations 2. A 4X game. I know, I know, not the flashiest of genres. Bear with me.

This is a Terror Star, near Harper (the sun) and Harper I (its only planet). Harper I is useless, so this system is basically perfect for a demonstration. Observe.

Yes, that thing just blew up a sun. It also destroys any ships, starbases and planets in the system, excluding other Terror Stars. The planets are reduced to delicious, mineable asteroid fields.

It's my preferred method of declaring war.

I like the directness of that approach. Nobody is gonna be questioning your intentions...if they're still alive...

Also, giant, planet-sized laser death stations are awesome (Death Star ftw).

Thank you, thank you. To be fair, it ends in everyone hating me, but that's what these are for.

Meet the FWC, or Flying War Crime.

That thing you see next to it, for comparison's sake, is a planet.

And the Death Star is honestly the bargain bin version. That only blows up one planet at a time.
