Somehow my SNES and PS1 controllers survived my childhood and still work today. The first controller I ever remember having break on me was a PS2 controller.
The right analogue stick detached internally and would uselessly flop about making playing absolutely impossible to play with if not sometimes quite funny especially on GTA3 when trying to run/walk made you randomly run/steer in different directions as the controller was wiggled.
I remember my housemate at uni got crazy gamer-raged one day at a bullshit moment in a game and in his rage got his PS3 controller and twisted the grips in different directions and split the controller in half, that was pretty crazy, hanging together on some wires and broken circuit board.
