The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
I've heard good things but I couldn't get into The Gunslinger. I read it halfway, and I had trouble picking it back up.

I hear it features a reoccurring character from The Stand. Now that's a good book.

I'm not sure about compelling, but for funny Fantasy, I'd recommend The Belgariad, by David Eddings. The story is deliberately standard fantasy fare (though still well-done), but the characters and dialogue are fantastic.
I'm VERY familiar with Eddings, he's one of my favorites.

I've also read most of Stephen King, so please don't suggest him.

The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas
The Time Travelers Wife
Flowers in the Attic
most of James Herbert's book
Shadow of the Wind

all are amazing reads
Time Traveler's Wife was excellent.
And anything by This guy. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulo_Coelho#Bibliography]
His books have lain an impression so deeply in my mind and heart...
Not necessarily too comedic, but engaging and rarely too dark.

For funny fantasy, how about "S Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure?"

The book is better than the film.

It's not pulpy and it's not lighthearted, but "The Power of the Dog" by Don Winslow is the book I'm reading right now, and it is extremely compelling. It's about Mexican drug lords and DEA efforts to stop them; it's brutal, bloody, and a hell of a read. Highly reccomended so far (and I'm only about halfway through).

If you want something lighthearted, definitely check out Catch-22 by Joseph Heller if you haven't already. It's a funny satire on the futility of war; it's about a WW2 bombadier that desperately wants out of the army. Highly reccomended.

Your mileage may vary, but I personally found Daemon by Leinad Zeraus to be quite excellent.

This. I'm about halfway through and I love it. Also, Deception Point by Dan Brown, it's my favorite book by him. Way better, in my opinion, than any of his other works.

EDIT: I feel obligated to say Dune, it's my all time favorite series. And I got my user name from them.

READ JOHN DIES AT THE END!
http://www.johndiesattheend.com/

It's one of the greatest books I've ever read and it's free online.
DO IT NOW!

PS:
Snow Crash is awesome too.

Can't.

The bad news is, yes, we?ve taken the story itself off the website, much to the disappointment of many of you. The only thing I can say is that there wasn?t really a choice. I had the story available online, with no ads and completely at my own expense, for seven years. Most of the negative feedback I got in the early days was people complaining that there was no .pdf or printable version of the story, because a computer monitor is such a horrific device to try to read a 350-page novel.
I wanted to read it too.

Well, I've read a dark fantasy book called American Gods. It's wirtten by Niel Gaiman, and is about a guy who works for Odin to destroy the modern gods in North America, and revive the old myhtologies.
It's really good, you should look for it.

Worth a shot. ^_^ In that case...

It might seem like kind of a weird suggestion, but if you can find it, you might want to give the Slayers light novels (not the graphic novels) by Hajime Kanzaka a look, at least the first one (The Ruby Eye). It's fairly light-hearted, though it might be aimed at a lower age demographic.

His books often have things connected, especially the Dark Tower series. It's great if you can read huge books. but if you're textually challenged don't even try to read it.
