Get the dread empire trilogy by Glen Cook.

Or get the black company series by the same author.
The Black Company series pisses me off... Final 4 books in that series are out of print, so I'm screwed there -_-
You can find them on amazon.
I'll make sure to look for them. I happen to have the third of those final 4 just sitting on my shelf, unreadable... makes me sad.

The Dark Tower series by Stephen King.
I've heard good things but I couldn't get into The Gunslinger. I read it halfway, and I had trouble picking it back up.

I hear it features a reoccurring character from The Stand. Now that's a good book.
His books often have things connected, especially the Dark Tower series. It's great if you can read huge books. but if you're textually challenged don't even try to read it.
The Gunslinger's not by any means a long book. Especially not compared to the expanded version of The Stand.

EarthSea, nothing too serious and still quite compelling. First one's about a magician who has to find himself to live.

A Scanner Darkly by Philip K Dick, or any books by Terry Pratchett. And possibly Lord of the Flies by William Golding but that one is very depressing.

Need a good read? well i tend to know some books...
[Warning] Following books might already have been posted.
1: Any books by Daren Shan. Theyre supposed to be scary... but i just think the plots is awesome =) its the first plots i HAVENT been able to guess for 2 years! (Yes, i guessed the Davinci Code *flex*)
2: I dont know if this book is only in danish... if it is its a big loss for the rest of the world. The Big Deitywar by Kenneth Bøg Andersen. I got the first book "The Devil's Apprentice" from a freind on my birhtday, and when everyone had left to go home, i sat down to read it. I went to bed 5 AM that night, and the book was finished. Ive swallowed the second one too ("The Reaper's Dices") and im gonna get myself number three too.
3: Read "The Shamer's Daughter"?
4: The Wardstone Series, "The Witchhunter's Apprentice", "The Witchhunter's Curse" and "The Withchunter's Secret". Theyre actually kind of scary, in their own, down-on-the-ground, medival way.
5: the "A Tale from the Edge" series by Stewart Rodel, even though im not sure its the right title... [Warning] This serie is LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG
6: "The Warrior" series by Josefine Ottesen.

Thats all my recomendations for now =)

Agreed. If anyone wants to know more about it, check out my review of the Earthsea Quartet (which no-one commented on) here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/326.111525]. A lot of good recommendations in this thread, although I won't comment on every one I agree on.

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy (this is VERY dark and violent)

or for a lighter read, I Am The messenger or The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

try the percy jackson books. they're based on greek mythology so it doesn't fit in much with steampunk but is a great fantasy read.
also one of the greatest fantasies of all time Lord Of The Rings, although some fnd it difficult to get into the books as it is mostly dialogue.
Mostly dialouge? 0_o

I always figured it was mostly description, with some dialouge and singing thrown in. (seriously, what's with the singing?)
The first half of the first book is fairly mediocre, but if you can get beyond that they're pretty good books.

personally, i'd reccommend this [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lies_of_Locke_Lamora] book, Scott Lynch's The Lies of Locke Lamora. It's fairly action packed and entertaining, basically the literature equivilant of one of those summer blockblusters. Snappy, entertaining, and flashy, but without any particular meaning behind it.
