For some reason, I am in dire need of being frightened in a video game. Who can offer some suggestions? I have not tried Dead Space, mainly because the gameplay looks rather dull. This is also the reason I have not tried Metro 2033. Also void F.E.A.R. (Played them all) Doom (Same) and Amnesia.

The Penumbra series.
And I think you should give Metro 2033 a shot, the gameplay isn't the best but the atmosphere is tense and the story is worth giving it a try.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has excellent atmosphere. I don't even do the missions, I just go off and go hunt creatures, awesomely fun and creepy.

What consoles do you have?

If you have a PS3, then Demon's Souls. The atmosphere and gameplay add a feeling of fear that makes you careful about everything you do the first time around.

Dead Space was scarier than I thought it would be, it's pretty good. It IS more of an action game but they do a lot of the atmosphere things right. Amnesia is awesome!

Siren Blood Curse - PS3
Forbidden Siren Series - PS2
Fatal Frame Series - Forget the platform!
Silent Hill 1 -3 PS2
Metro 2033 - Multiplatform - Not scary, more mildly creepy.

I find Dead Space weak sauce in the scare department tbh.

Silent Hill?

Grab a PS2, pick up SH2, get scared.
Also available for the PC, although it's a lame port. Amnesia you've played. Penumbra is similar to Amnesia, so you might want to try that. Or you could try going for one of the classics, which is also one of my favorites, Clock Tower. Yes, the first one. (It's known as The First Fear on the PSX)

You might also wanna try checking this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63P6vpRwTf4] out.

Clock Tower for the SNES. Seriously, I can't recommend this one enough. No way to attack, no music, just you and a murderous psychopath in a big mansion...

Wait, what?

Dead Space and Metro 2033 are great games with amazing atmosphere, 2 of the only games to actually scare me.

Well, except the Silent Hill series.

Wat.

Seriously, go play those, now. Dead Space on Medium (or hard, if you want), and Metro 2033 on Hardcore or one of the Ranger difficulties.
>implying difficulty = horror
Don't get me wrong, both are good games (I really do recommend at least trying Metro, I found it quite interesting and it has some wonderful atmosphere, albeit I was never scared. It's more unnerving than scary (thinking of the scene with the gate/door thing in the room with Bourbon and the bodies). Dead Space was mostly jump scares which let me down, but it's a decent action game. Nothing really matches Amnesia for me. Only game that ever made me shout out loud, pause the game, and leave the room.

Can't speak about Metro 2033, but Dead Space is just a shooter with jump scares... not really scary

On topic: Penumbra Overture is great.

Dead Space's gameplay is better than it looks. It's really not very scary though, at all. I say that as someone who is an absolute wimp about Horror games as well.

The Fatal Frame games are very good for Horror, I would recommend those.
