Good news, I went there this winter. Awesome country. Let's see what I remember.
They had chicken sausages. They were terrible.
Lots of lamb in Egypt, often served as kebabs. Also get lots of bread and funky dips. And the Coca Cola cans have weird pull tabs. Mindblowing stuff.
There's a lot of poverty in Egypt. Some families live in conditions that we would describe as "third world". There is wealth in Egypt, but those have have are vastly outnumbered by those that have not. For example, there's a teaching crisis in the countryside because so few teachers can afford to get by under such terrible pay.
Egypt is also going through a tourism crisis right now. Much of the economy is dependant on tourism, which has slowed drastically, partly as a result of Westerners being somewhat uneager to travel to Arab states, as well as the terrorist attack in Luxor in 1997. Most of the hotels were only half full as a result, even though as a tourist experience, it's certainly the best place I've ever been to.
Despite the hardships of poverty and the like, the Egyptian people are as a rule very friendly. Perhaps I only got to observe them as a tourist, and naturally they would be nicer to us, but I was surprised by their warm personable approach, and disarming sense of humour. Oh, and if you go to Egypt, random people at tourist sites will ask you where you're from and then spout weird phrases that they believe to be synonymous with the country (I'm English, and got lots of people saying "Lovely-jubbly", and "tally ho". Most amusing).
I know more about the place, but I'm not sure how much you need, so yeah, digest that.
