Console games will generally get the courtesy of me listening to their music. I might listen to the in-game music for computer games or I will turn on iTunes or a DVD or something from Hulu. My handhelds will almost always get the iTunes treatments. In the case of iTunes I have an 80 song(and growing) playlist of my favorite songs.

if the game experience depends on atmosphere, like Oblivion, or it's the first time I've played through story, I listen to the game music. multiplayer i use pandora.

Sometimes I just play my music library (which is mostly soundtracks to begin with) on random but usually I just listen to the game.

Shooters get some random metal or other high energy music most times, though if I'm feeling silly I'll play something like Vince Guaraldi jazz or the Charlie Brown Christmas special soundtrack. RPGs kind of depend. Many I just leave the in game music going, but anything like Oblivion gets some iTunes on shuffle. Fighting games or action games almost never retain their original soundtrack for me. Same with sports games.
