For the talk about disbanding the air force though, this isn't just something that's been going around in the US, this is apparently a NATO-wide discussion right now since the air force is, fundamentally, a branch with acts to further the ends of the Army or Navy (and Marines in the case of the US) but never its own, and with most countries having a de-facto Army's air force and Navy's air force already the question "do we even need a separate air force?" is being taken pretty seriously. Sure nothing might come of it, and nothing probably will, but it's also the same line of thought which say the air force created in the first place as well, so the possibilities are always there.
Out of interest, which NATO countries are talking about this? The US is rather unusual in that the USMC and Navy have such substantial fixed wing aircraft numbers. OTOH, always talk about sticking the USMC into the US army.

In my totally not expert opinion, it'd make more sense just to get the branches to operate closer together, rather than worry about duplication.

Royal Navy for a while here, got out about 3 years ago.

Not many tips I can give you apart from: make sure you have a thick skin and a sense of humour. Do not get hung up on any bollocking you receive, it's for your own good. Get as fit as fuck before you join, PT will get you fitter still but it will really help.

From the chatter, seems to be happening in Canada, the UK, Germany and France. Can't really understand for Germany, but for Canada, the UK and France it makes sense from a logistical point of view (one being a continent sized nation, the other two having islands all over the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans to defend. Both those situations screams "geography based command"). If there are any others I wouldn't know.

What I CAN complain about is the fact that I definitely picked the wrong job to do (intelligence specialist; trust me, it's WAY more boring than it sounds) and that the Navy has the absolute stupidest uniform policies out of any branch. Ugh.
Out of personal interest, what did your duties as an intelligence specialist include?

Nothing as exciting as the title makes it sound.
