Painkiller.

It probably won't be your thing, since it eschews a plot and ADS aiming for shooting at things until the Havok engine takes over, but if you need some stress relief, I can't think of many better games for that purpose. Also, it has a lot of very awesome weapons. (Ever wanted a gun that fired shurikens and lightning? Or a shotgun with a built-in freeze ray?)

Vanquish. Its like if GoW and DMC had a love-child who grew up into an evil russian cliche. It is as awesome as that sounds. (well okay the bad guy is an evil russian, thus a cliche... you know what, just play the damn game)

For FPS:
Anything in the Battlefield Series.
Battlefield 2142, Bad Company, Bad Company 2, 1943 are the ones I have played
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2
For TPS:
Lost Planet 1 and 2
Crackdown 1 and 2

That is all I can think of right now.

Another vote for Painkiller, I'm surprised that on the home of ZP, it took to page 2 for it to show up, but it really is sterling old school shooter FUN, and isn't FUN what is missing from so many modern 'realistic' shooters.

Managing to not concern itself about such awful dead weight as a plot, means it can throw huge variety at you, in terms of enemies , weapons and locations, you can go from graveyard to cathedral to funfair to military base in the space of a few levels, and once you're done, you can head back in to try to unlock the 'tarot cards', which are like achievements except they give you extra powers, perks and bonuses while playing.

for instance, 20 secs of bullet time, invulnerability, double damage, etc, or more cash, more armour, etc throughout the level.

On top of that, the bosses tend to be 'shadow of the Colossus' sized beasties, truly impressive for their time, and still fun to battle with now.

Oh and Borderlands mixes a single player fun shooter with WOW style items and levelling and works well, and is again, fun!

Killer 7. Though, I always say Killer 7 any time anyone asks me for a recomendation.
Your avatar looks like a Team Fortress version of Conan, but what do I know? I only own a Wii.

Anywho, hello, I'm a pornography addict. It's like a drug addiction. I just can't get enough; I'm always chasing that silicone-enhanced dragon. Pee, furries, sheep, I can't get eff'd up enough. Lately I've been getting into bondage porn, but watching people slap each other without actually screwing just isn't doing it for me. Got any recommendations?
I take it you haven't see this. [http://theflamingc.com/]

Otherwise, for lesser known titles that'll blow you away with "WHY WASN'T THIS ADVERTISED BETTER?!", go for "Wolfenstein" or "Singularity".
I'd definitely say Singularity, but I felt Wolfenstein fell far short of my expectations. It wasa chunky and kinda fell flat on its own face.

OT: Metro 2033 is probably one of my favourite recent shooters. Great game.

Bioshock (Bloody great shooter, all the good parts of RPG, none of the bad)
Why not

System Shock 2 (Bioshock's daddy, and the reason I couldn't come to love Bioshock [AKA: "Not System Shock 2"])

If you haven't played Bioshock, you really need to. It's one of the great games of the generation.
I'd recommend you stay away from Bioshock and play System Shock 2 instead. It's infinitely better.

I'd also recommend Deus Ex aka the best game ever made.
Re Deus Ex, I just finished a replay with the Revision and Biomod mods, the New Vision textures and the DX10 drivers. They spiffed up the game to an amazing degree. Check them out if you go for a replay.

There is a LOT of hate out there for bioshock more because it's "not system shock 3"

Bioshock is admittedly a LOT like a re-imagining of System Shock 2 in a different environment, with many gameplay elements essentially the same (Psionics powers, plasmids) not to mention plot similarities but so many bitchy comparisons like how the game is not unforgiving enough and has a quicksave function... when the EXACT SAME CRITIC will in the next review praise Half Life 2 for having the exact same elements!

I came mainly from Half Life to Bioshock and it was glorious. Maybe coming from SS2 you could be longing... but for every time I hear about how great SS2 was I hear about what a ***** it was: weapons dissolving after a few shots, getting into an unrecoverable status, endlessly repeating huge sections, having to live with tiny mistakes for the whole game.

But these people who constantly deride Bioshock and are like "why can't it be as unforgiving and restrictive as SS2" I do not get.

There is this guy on Youtube who said the Gene Bank "ruins bioshock" as it does not force you go one precise upgrade path and dares to give you the flexibility to try new abilities and combinations for what is most effective. That's crazy, you are still limited in what you can afford... you just aren't forced to continue down a path that is apparently wrong from the first step.

I liked Bioshock. For me, it combined enough RPG elements not to be grind-heavy or head-spinningly anal-retentive, and it's about the closest current-gen game I've ever played to the original Doom (that is, in terms of mostly-linear-but-sprawling-with-lots-of-sidepaths).

Deus Ex is good, but don't take it on without a lot of time and patience. It's hard, it's long, it looks terrible by today's standards, but the story, open-endedness and the hilariously awful voice acting will probably keep you going until the end. (I haven't actually beaten it.)

And another good one: Just Cause 2. It's a third-person sandbox game set on a Southeast Asian island about the size of Australia. And I must admit, it is fun to jump off a broadcast tower while the camera moves to the best place to show off the broadcast antenna exploding.

Also, Painkiller, which I explained up above.

Bulletstorm, I guess, although I'd encourage you to try Fallout or Oblivion.
Since when is oblivion a fps? Fallout is oblivion with guns , therefore oblivion has no guns , therefore its not a shooter. (Although you could argue that u can SHOOT an arrow , but that doesn't count )

OT: well just to be different from every other post , Metroid prime 3: corruption. I can't believe people forget the only good wii fps. Shame on you so-called gamers ( this is a joke don't flame me )

I would also add Killing Floor to this list.

Yeah, I'm not a complete f*cking idiot, I do realize neither Oblivion or Fallout are FPS's, that's why I said he should try Bulletstorm first, I only suggested the other two because he seemed to be in need of broadening his horizons to something outside of your typical generic shooter.

I may be a bit late to reply, but anyway: I started replaying it yesterday with New Vision. Still the best game ever made by far. Watch out, Hong Kong, here i come.

Oh you need to Stop Now and put Revision in there. They redid so much, and so better. Unatco, New York, and Hong Kong are fantastic compared to the original maps.

You should check out Biomod as well. It incorporates Shifter and adds auto-control of augmentations ("passive" ones work automatically while "active" ones still need to be triggered) and - drum roll please - a ledge PULL UP FEATURE. That's right folks, you can jump while you're up against a crate or a ledge, and your character will pull himself up. (Usually. Sometimes you have to jump around and change the angle you're at. It's not perfect, but anything helps).

Biomod is a bit quirked by Revision in that their Athletics skill replaced Swimming, but Revision changes the text back to Swimming. Still works as advertised though.
