In their current state, do you think any of the next-gen consoles have got a killer app yet?

If we count handhelds, the 3DS has so many good games I am not even going to try to list them. Easily the best console for value right now.
Agreed. There's no debating this.
I'm of the mind that both the handhelds are pretty strong at the moment. Disregarding the Vita's horrible proprietary memory, it has a damn good catalogue of games, most of them exclusive too.

Well, if you're a JRPG gamer anyway.

I play my 3DS and Vita more than my PS3/4 and 360/Xbone combined, though the wii u also get's it fair share of use.

Wii U:
SSB
Mario Kart 8
Hyrule Warriors
Bayonetta 1&2

3DS:
SMT IV
Final Fantasy Theatrhythm Curtain call
Bravely default
Rune Factory 4
SSB
Pokemon

PSV:
Tales of Hearts R
Danganronpa 1&2
Ys Celceta
Freedom Wars
Soul Sacrifice

They've all got their share of winners at the moment :D

Note: I did leave out some things like Persona 4 Golden (PSV) and Tales of the Abyss (3DS) because they were re-releases from earlier consoles. The same could be said about Tales of Hearts R but since we never got the original in the West I included it.

Can only speak from what got me to buy the systems and thus constitutes a killer app for me in short there is really only one atm and that is Bayonetta 2 for the WiiU I am hoping that Xenoblade X will be another. Some may call a few of Nintendos offerings killer apps and that would be true for sales for a few people but from a personal standpoint I have been very disappointed with Nintys more traditional IP offerings this gen more than I think I ever have.

PS4 and Xbox One dont have a single one as far as I am concerned although I did get a PS4 and I suppose Guilty Gear Xrd is the closest I have see for a killer app for me personally which is pretty niche really I dont really see any killer apps in the PS4s immediate future either (or xbox one) but there are more games I am moderately interested in on it than there are on the WiiU (which has two I am very interested in and bought the system for)

I'll be getting a wii U at some point to play the next Zelda game. Can't think of anything PS4 or Xbone have currently or coming out that I care very much about.

Both PS4 and xbone do not have any worthwhile exclusives out yet (and they do feel like the stop gap generation as stated above by a few posters). They got games to play if you wanted to get the latest system but nothing that warrants buying a specific system to play a specific game. And with titles appearing on both consoles and the PC, that latter point seems like it will only be solved with first party exclusives, but he first party must-haves are ages away. All that has come out so far in the first party category is updated re-releases and rather forgettable titles. I'm still waiting for price drops and the first party gems to come out, then I'll consider one of those two systems and grab the 3rd party titles I missed. Right now I have a PC, PS3, and Wii U (and a 360, if my sister lends it back to me for Lost Odyssey) and the limited funds that convinces me I'm fine for now.

The Wii U does have titles out that make it worth grabbing, as noted above. The lack of good third party support and the overabundance of a certain plumber is what turns people off with Nintendo's offering.

Wii-U's kind of been covered, though I tilt my head a bit askew at the guy who said Pikmin 3 (Its not a bad game, but its hardly been a system mover)

PS4's had Little Big Planet 3 pop out, though without much marketing fanfare, and some glitchiness kind of hampered it (I haven't played it since early January, so it may have gotten patched up). Second Son was decent, but felt like the move to a new engine wasn't fully featured out with limited enemy varieties, and doesn't have a lot of replay value, with the choices barely even registering outside the final cutscene.

Xbone's main contenders would be Titanfall, which seems to have imploded in on its own hollow of low content fairly rapidly, and Sunset Overdrive, which seems to be a love it or hate proposition, but even the love its are leaving it much in the same vein as Second Son.

Halo MCC and Last of Us are both re-releases.

Multiplatform wise, GTA V (with its ever "coming soon" PC version) has probably shifted most of them, or the COD/AC releases.

If you mean for the Xbox One and PS4, nah.

For the Wii U though? Well... Wonderful 101, Hyrule Warriors,Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Bayonetta 2, Super Mario Bros. 3D World, Pikman 3, Mario Kart 8, and Smash Bros all come to mind.

Master Chief collection could have been a big one, but it won't since the multiplayer was flat-out busted for a solid month and somewhat functional but with less features than Halo 2 had which is the state from then to now.

PS4 is getting Bloodborne next month though. That'll be a big one.

As far as im concerned, none of them have any.

Or rather, the 3DS has Monster Hunter, which is all i can really bring myself to care about.

And the PSVita does seem to be getting a fair number of good JRPGs as well as remakes of older JRPGs... which end up on PC as well because nobody bought a Vita.

Nope, nadda, bubkiss. Maybe the latest Nintendo Handheld with Pokemon clone number 25, but then as my contemptible sarcasm shows, I don't find it that killer personally. As my memory serves that last one was a real system seller.

Frankly I'm the last person to ask about this kinda topic at the moment, in my maximum contempt mode.

Smash Bros and Hyrule Warriors has been tempting me into getting a Wii U, especially since I now have more disposable income. I only own an Xbox One (console-wise) and absolutely cannot think of an exclusive that would make me buy it if I didn't have one. Halo would have been it, but, well, you know what happened with that.

As has been stated repeatedly thus far, the Wii U is the only console with any kind of "killer app" in the forms of MK8 and SSB4. Really, apart from Wii U the only other current systems I feel I'll get any use out of are my 3DS XL and my PC. So I'm set for years!

I'm tempted to buy a Wii U, simply because of Bayonetta 2, but nothing else on it really appeals to me. People will point at Mario Kart 8 but from what I've played of it, it suffers from the same (if not as bad) rubber band AI that ruined Mario Kart Wii. Plus with what limited game time I have, I really can't justify the purchase.

I will probably get a PS4, Uncharted 4 is the system seller for me and I'm hoping that is delayed like all Naughty Dog games tend to for more polishing and what have you so I can keep playing stuff on my PS3. I almost bought one when Second Son came out last year but the 'meh' reviews put me off despite the fact that I'll probably love it.

There is good stuff coming I'm sure. It just seems to be taking a while to get here.

yeah, as it sits right know, Nintendo does seem to be the only one to have what I'd call 'killer apps' (Bayonetta, Smash, Mario Kart)

past that, yeah, no.

Can't think of any real 'must haves' for ether system that are out currently.

I mean the only game I can think of for the Xbone I even want is KI.

Sony on the other hand ... has nothing of interest at all ...

for now.

Persona 5 and Bloodborne are both things I want.

Got Infamous, Killzone Driveclub, and remastered Last of Us as of now, currently waiting for Order 1886

None of them that alone warrants the console, but together they make it worth it, in fact I've never bought a console just because of a single game, it has always been on the promise of the amount of exclusives the console can provide, the PS3 performed quite well in that regard last gen, so I'm putting my trust in Sony, from what I saw of the Wii and the Xbox 360 last gen I'm not putting my bets in with the competition, the Playstation seems like the solitary console that doesn't dry up whenever the twilight years of each system arrives

I love how despite the constant "Nintendo is doomed they should just quit now" ramblings, here we are mostly all in agreement that they're the only company that has any high quality, worthwhile games in their lineup. I'd like to add NintendoLand to the list of killer apps- it gets pulled out at every party without fail, particularly when there are lots of inexperienced players attending.

That said, the argument for a PS4 is growing. Infamous Second Son and Batman: Arkham Knight are pretty tempting, but it's not enough to warrant the console just yet. I would add LittleBigPlanet3 to that list, but I went with the PS3 version instead. But yes, as it stands, nothing that makes me scream "I NEED THIS NOW".

And the Xbox brand continues its lifelong stretch of not releasing anything remotely catering to my tastes (at least nothing beyond the odd "oh that looks kinda cool" game on Xbox Live Arcade) so I still couldn't care less about it. Call me when 99% of their exclusives aren't "faceless man guns down all of the foreigners and/or aliens".

I suppose this is one of the advantages of having such a solidified stable of good IP- I feel completely safe purchasing Nintendo consoles at launch, because I know Nintendo always delivers. I know I'm going to get a Mario, a Zelda, a Mario Kart, a Smash, a Kirby, plus whatever other weird and wonderful products they have to offer. It becomes a guaranteed investment on my part, not having to worry that only 3 good games will actually turn up for the system I've just bought. At the moment, the other manufacturers don't have that degree of... trust? I just don't have the confidence in the PS4 lineup that I need in order to justify the purchase.

Infamous second son was waaay better than I expected it to be. All the complaints about it compared to the original games seemed unfounded when I finally played it, and if it weren't for the fact that it's a bit of a short ride it would have probably been high on my games of the year list.

other than that... hmm... not really. *shrug*

the wii-u has those titles that nintendo fans love, but nothing that'll convert someone who isn't already a fan. The Xbone is still coasting on the good graces of the American market having a short memory and the past glory of the 360, and the titles that the PS4 wants most badly to associate with it keep getting stuck in development hell.

That said, Persona 5. I will walk through fire if it means playing that game when I'm done. technically it'll be available for PS3 too, but eh, nuance.

The last killer game for me was The Battle for Middle-Earth. It was my desire to play that game which made me finally switch from Windows ME to Windows XP.

Don't get me wrong, there have been games that I've absolutely loved in the years after that but nothing that has made me rush out to buy a new OS or console in order to play it.

I own an Xbox One because I got drunk and didn't realise I'd bought it off eBay until the thing arrived.

I bought the WiiU in anticipation of the new Zelda (and enjoyed the HD remake of Wind Waker whilst I wait) - also the new 3D mario game is fun (have but yet to play the 2D one).

PS4 & Xbox One have nothing that interests me, especially over being able to get it on PC.

To qualify (as it sounds like bragging) I've owned every console since the NES (and a few before) including oddities like the 3DO R.E.A.L. and Jaguar64 as there were a particular game I wanted to play but nothing on the current gen makes me want to buy one.

To ease development of the new consoles they've made them too much like a cheap PC and consequently games are easier to port to PC so they will be, hence being able to play them on my cheap PC without having to shell out on a new console. I'm also not a fan of the new dualshock controller, I can't see what it adds and think dedicated share buttons detract.

In defence of the WiiU the screen in the pad allows me to transfer my game to it to carry on playing when the missus wants the tv. I've not found it massively useful in games (Zelda it simply had the pause menu - though the map whilst sailing was handy, Mario it replicates the screen already) but that is a useful feature.

For me I don't think there is enough out there for either the PS4/XB1, but I have friends that have said it was worth it for the changes in Shadows of Mordor and Dragon Age: Inquisition.

I am pretty sure there won't be enough "killer apps" for me to buy either one of those consoles this generation for I have a PC that runs games fairly well and I can't see anything else coming out this generation to be of that much more demanding and it seems the indie front is strong for the PC so I have access to those games over console exclusives which tend to feel like other games.

As others have said, the Wii U's got a handful now, but I think for the more discerning gamer not interested in this year's instalment of Assassin's Creed, Call Of Duty or FIFA, Bloodborne will be the first one to be released on the 'proper' next-gen consoles (PS4/XBone).
