In your opinion, what musicians have had a sudden decline in quality?

Project :wumpscut: did this.

First, he did this:

<youtube=QT8zdnaxyME>

French + English + German + shrieks = awesome

And then... this.

<youtube=4JbYRRakG9I>

POLE DANCERS!

What... what happened? It's not even terrible, it's just so bafflingly different from his old stuff... in a bad way.

Fucking Black Tide. They started REALLY promising by making songs like this

very awesome and heavy and just TRUE heavy metal.

then they did a tour with Bullet For My Valentine (those fucking poseurs...) then all of the sudden they decided they wanted to be part of the 12-year old fucking, pedophilia-infested scene that is Metalcore.

so fucking sad to see them jump from the side of the Metal fence that is Trv metal to the Poseur side, then have them stick their dicks through the fence all the time with their first album... Just like Trivium.

Green Day. The moment Billie Joe got on his Bush-hating their music went downhill.

And I'm not GW Bush fan but he took it to an asinine level.

Capcha: Get your goat

How does it do that?!
No, Green Day was on a slow slide downward since releasing Dookie. By Warning they had run out of artistic merit, and the anit-Bushism was more out of the need to jump on something hip to counteract their decay.

The latest Red Hot Chili Peppers album was a big pile of testicles. I guess that's what happens when you lose a musical genius like John Frusciante, but even then, a lot of Stadium Arcadium was a bit boring too.
I actually quite liked that album, I think Klinghoffer did real well, despite seeming too subtle. His backing vocals were great. I agree that Frusciante was a key member but at least Klignhoffer didn't try to rip him off at all. That would have been worse. The way I feel about this album is the same way I feel about Hitman Absolution; far from the best but enjoyable all the same.
I actually loved their latest album. It has some of my outright favourites on there, and I say this as someone who's been a massive Chilis fan for years.

I agree partially, but some of the mainstream still puts out good stuff. A$AP Rocky, Tyga, Yeezy, Eminem, Rick Ross, Wiz Khalifa, and Drake are putting out good content.
Throw some Kendrick Lamar on that list boy-o.

Arguably the best hip-hop artist of the past year or two.

I dunno. I think it's the egos of James and Lars (which Bob might actually be feeding). Did you check out that collaboration between Lou Reed? That's some fucking terrible music. They got a couple good riffs in that, but it's really hard to listen to James shout "I am the table!" and Lou's incessant rambling. Poor Kirk.
Yeah I'd imagine the egos had something to do with it but that's why you need a producer who's going to rein in the egos and have the balls to say "actually lads that sounds a bit shit" and I don't think Bob was that guy.

Never listened to that collaoration.Heard it was shite so I decided to give it a miss

The more interesting question, and tougher to answer, would be if you can name any musicians out there who get better over time.
I could name a few, but that's not the drive of this thread.
I think Amon Amarth have gotten much better since their first few albums and Symphony X put out my favourite albums more recently so there are a few out there but then they are still going so they will likely decline again. The only definite band I could name who got BETTER was At the Gates because Slaughter of the Soul is their masterpiece (to me at least.)

OT: I agree with those saying Metallica took a nosedive in quality after the Black Album. I also think 13, Megadeth's last album was really really weak compared to Endgame but they've been up and down their whole career anyway.

One of the best things about the band is how it can create debate even among its own fans, by creating albums that try different things. Mostly the debate with this one and One Hot Minute, though, as you know.

I've noticed that a lot of people on the 'Scapist aren't very fond of rap/hip-hop... But anyway.

The biggest one for me IMO is Jay-Z. I've hated every album of his starting from the Black Album.

Drake as well. He went from his Heartbreak Drake fire to his Take Care pop album. And he won a Grammy for that shit. And his new album seems to be more of the same from what I've heard so far.

Lupe Fiasco. Now this decline I understand. He had major problems with his label and they forced him to make shallow shit.

Kendrick Lamar. His music used to have a message (Section.80 stuff like Keisha's Song) and now he seems to be hiding behind this "movie" concept (that isn't very good) in an attempt to rap about the same stuff that the mainstream rappers rap about... He's still the best Freshman though. At least some cuts from the new album were pretty great.

J. Cole. Friday Night Lights was a freaking classic mixtape and then... I honestly don't know what happened in Cole World. Dude is an incredible producer though.

Leona Lewis. Glassheart was such a dissapointment for me. She went from being my favourite singer to me not being able to stand her voice.

Taylor Swift. I'm mainly saying this cos a lot of her old fans preferred her previous albums. I loved the shit outta Red though. Definitely my favourite singer at the moment. And so many people give me shit for saying that.

Don't forget Macklemore. Seriously, his stuff other than Thrift Shop is fantastic.

Have to agree about NIN being a far cry from what they were in the 90's. I will give him credit for being willing to admit that he is at least aware of his music not being as good. He attributed it to the fact that when he released his first few albums he was upset with life and angsty. His pain drove his creativity, but now his life is good and his music has suffered for it. Only thing i hold against him is manson. If not for trent almost no one would know who he is and the world would be a better place for it.

Also agree on Wumpscut. Rudy should have stopped after wreath of barbs. Its obvious he has been phoning it in for a long time now. I still remember him talking about how he created bone peeler from start to finish in 2 weeks. It showed. A shame since he did create some really awesome albums for a while.

Memphis May Fire. On their first ep and album they played a blend of southern rock and metalcore. But then they released their second album and sounded like every other metalcore band.

How do you go from this?:

To this:
When Rise Records strips you of your personality and forces you to sound like every other band on their label in order to sell your records to the same stupid fanbase. There's building an identity for your label to create customer loyalty, and then there's what Rise does. For what it's worth, though, I think their newest album is the best thing in the Risecore genre and is actually quite fun and listenable.

EDIT: Megadeth's new material is laughable, I even loved 13 but the stuff they've been releasing from their new album is a joke. I really think The Killers are just awful now, they were always fun and energetic and then they put out Battleborn, and it was just a snoozefest full of bad lyrics and crap songwriting. I've NEVER witness a band fall so far.

Really? I think Challenger is some of the worst they have to offer. Its so painfully average. Although I am glad Rise has been signing less core bands. I love some metalcore but a lot of the core bands Rise has to offer isn't that great. Although I love The Color Morale, I think they're the best core band on the label.

Definitely Macklemore. Same Love is one of the only songs from a hip-hip artist that can bring a tear to my eye.

That would imply that any of them were good in the first place <.<

Also, while I'm busy offending people, how about The Beatles? I've always thought their late stuff was just not that good, but everyone gave them a pass just because they were The Beatles.
