Minecraft came out twice. Once in 2004 and once in 2005. They were called blockland and roblox.
Notch has said clearly that Minecraft is based on Infiniminer. No one claimed that it was the first game of its kind.

In terms of gameplay.. what gameplay? Build equipment so you can find diamonds which will help you find diamonds to find more diamonds while you're finding diamonds with a diamond cache of diamond furniture and diamond walls and diamond diamonds?
Or you could... You know, build things, explore, teraform etc. Diamonds are the only thing to do if you make them the only thing to do. It's like if I did nothing but alchemy in Skyrim and then claimed that the only thing to do was alchemy.
Hell, last time I played Minecraft I built the Imperial City (1 to 1 scale) from Oblivion. My friend also built a cathedral and we created a redstone minecart track which went through a dwarven city we created inside two connecting Ravines.

The NPCs were just a small feature to the game to make it easier for people to make maps with NPCs. Before they were introduced, people were forced to just make it implied that an NPC is there.

The graphics might as well be placeholders that were accidentally left in.
Minecraft is a game which was made by a single
non artist who later went to create a company. Graphics and aesthetics don't even affect this kind of game in the least. If you think they do, then you do know that this game has pretty big texture pack support? You can easily download a texture pack in about 5 seconds...

Minecraft also has worse multiplayer because it's slightly harder to connect to servers, since it doesn't have a server browser.
I've had no problem connecting to people in Minecraft. And I'd rather not have a server browser for a game like this. It's so much easier just being able to connect to the exact server you want without having to look through all the crap. Lack of server browser also allows people to create semi open communities without the use of passwords. Griefing is also a big thing to avoid in Minecraft.
For example, let's say the Escapist hosts a Minecraft server. Without a server browser only people from the Escapist play on the server. However, if there's a server browser then ANYONE can play on the server.
