Tidus from FF 10
I don't see how he was incompetent...
Without him, Sin would never have ultimately been defeated for good, if he wasn't there, the cycle would haqve continued, he was the one who challenged Yunalesca and her Final Aeon bullshit and ultimately saved the world from Yu Yevon, Yuna (or the rest of the cast, bar Auron) would have tried to do anything remotely different to stop sin.

Love him or hate him (most hate his guts) he was the reason Yuna lived and the reason Spira was freed from Sin. I don't see how that is incompetent.

Not to mention his Sphere Grid makes him a fucking beast yo.
Yeah I always thought they did Tidus quite well all things considered - his was an interesting way of getting a character into the world who could question everything (thus allowing the player to gain knowledge about the world - Tidus wasn't from Spira, therefore he had a legitimate reason to ask about things that any child would know).

He was a whiny, annoying, effeminate prick, but it just wouldn't be final fantasy if the protagonist wasn't a whiny, annoying effeminate prick. I certainly wouldn't say he was incompetent.

Now, Harry Potter was a classic of incompetent protagonists. I actively despise the whole Harry Potter series (even insofar as I own every bloody book and have seen all the films) because Harry simply did not deserve to live.

Shinn Asuka from Gundam Seed Destiny, while Kira, the one from the first show is the Reluctant Warrior, and become a very well-rounded character, Shinn is just...Well, he is a red-blooded jerkass. Really, it's bad, and actually it kept getting worse.
I HATED that guy. My favourite scene from Gundam SEED Destiny is when Athron punches him in the face.

I have a particular dislike of Kratos from God of War 2 onward. In the first game, his problems and anger were legitimate. Yes, his vengeance against Ares was justified and the gods did kinda screw him over a bit at the end. But, the only lesson he learns from that is "revenge and violence solves everything!" In God of War 2 he becomes as bad, if not worse than, his predecessor and Zeus rightly punishes him for it. Now Kratos could have used this opportunity to reflect on how big of a dick he became, but nope its "RRRAGH! ZEUS MUST DIE!!!" Even when he has the ability to go back to any point in his life (including a few points that could have saved his family) he just goes back to kill Zeus. All he accomplishes is getting the one goddess who helped him killed and eventually causing the Apocalypse.

Okay, okay, it's been a while since I read it. A long while. But, uh... doesn't she shame a guy into suicide? A guy she knew full well was mentally and emotionally unstable? An act for which she shows zero remorse?

Oh, and doesn't she get people sent to shock therapy as punishment? (As opposed to, y'know, therapy.)

Of course, that's on top of being thoroughly unpleasant and abusing her power throughout.
it was the movie and mostly my first impressions....mabye I just didn't grasp subtlety and expected her to me some Umbridge esque ***** literally carrying an axe around or something

Oh my god...This is awesome, i mean...Really, thanks, just finished the first chapter and it looks like it's going to be a great read!

Just one thing about Shinji, the problem with him, is that he got a lot of potential, he does some really badass stuff in the show, but...He never develops as a character, he always returns to the status quo, and in the end he is the one who causes the apocalypse. So yeah, the entire thing ends in an Epic Fail. Shinji is made to be a deconstruction of the Mecha anime kid hero, the thing about the other heros, is that they usually mature in their shows, Shinji doesn't.

I loved how he lost to Athrum in the final fight, i mean, since the start of the second half he was acting really smug and arrogant. So it was awesome how the moment when Athrum decided to go all out he destroyed Shinn's Mecha that easily along with his pride.

Yes, watching Shin get his shit wrecked is truly a wonder to behold.

Walking Dead. Everyone but that redneck with the crossbow, he was pretty pragmatic.

To be fair, zombie shows kinda need the protagonists to be stupid, or else they would win, since zombies pose no real threat to someone thinking and not rotting. But geez, these guys are DUMB!
^This

Absolutely true. I watched the first season but couldn't watch any more because everyone was continuing to be complete morons with the prioritization skills of a two year old. I really tried to like it, too!

I'm with you on that red-neck crossbow guy as well(apparently his name is Daryl). I liked him, as he was the only character who seemed to show any caution, wisdom or skill. Beyond Rick, of course, with his uncanny ability to shoot accurately at the expense of EVERYTHING ELSE.

I especially hated Rick's wife. GOD DAMN I COULD NOT STAND HER! What a stuck-up entitled *****! Was she seriously talking down to the veterinarian about his medical qualifications, you know, the only medical professional they could ever find who just so happened to also be doing everything in his power to treat her son, for FREE? What gives her the right to do so, anyway? She is utterly useless, and I couldn't recall her ever helping anyone at any point with anything, ever!

The response said veterinarian gave to her probing was much more concise and polite than the response I would have given, I'll tell you that!

Tidus from FF 10

Vaan from FF12, although he is the most tolerable of the list.
Vaan and Penelo were both naff, but that's because they were shoehorned in at the last minute to be "relatable" characters, relatable to who I don't know. A character doesn't need to be relatable to make me interested in them, (and god knows Vaan wasn't relatable or interesting) I can't relate to Balthier or Bosch, but I would've much preferred them as the main characters as was the original plan.

I mean you'll notice that most of the cutscenes that arn't involving just Vaan and another random NPC or Penelo, him or Penelo don't do or say anything, just sit on boxes because their models were stuck in at the last minute and "Sush now, the adults are talking.". I suppose he is tolerable though, just because he doesn't do or say anything most of the time.

In defence of Tidus though, he's /supposed/ to be incompetent, he's completely out of time and place, serving as an audience surrogate so the characters arn't inexplicably explaining things they should know to each other. I know Tidus is really devisive, but regardless of whether or not you like him, he serves his purpose and his arc works and flows extremely well. In fact, his naievety is exactly what causes them to defeat Sin permanently in the first place, everyone else was just resigned to what was supposed to happen, happening because that's the way it's always been. Without Tidus it would've made no sense for the characters to rebel against the status quo otherwise.

I see from some previous posts that people mix up the word "incompetent" to mean "I don't like them". While some folks may be whiny emo-douchebags who seem incapable of realizing they're not useless tools, they are in fact not incompetent just dumbasses. If they were incompetent, they'd be useless baggage (like at least 1/3 of every JRPG's cast).

Incompetent means not having or showing the necessary skills to do something successfully. None of the previous sentence applies to personality, likability, or social skills (unless said social skills actually translate into putting the rest of the cast in a bad position or get someone important killed). Being an unlikable douchebag doesn't mean someone is useless, even douchebags can be useful and good at some task.

Tidus gets mistaken for incompetent when he's really just clueless, but he can still fight. Wakka would be more along the incompetent range as he's a failed BlitzBall player and useless party companion beyond the first few areas. Its not worth spending points on his sphere grid at all.
Agred with all except Wakka. Wakkas a boss, Attack reels destroy all! Kihmari was the worst party member, I mean yeah he had Blue Magic, but everyone else had something way more useful.

Lightning and Serah from the FF13 trilogy. Just...bleh. Although I thought Fang had some credibility, despite what SE did with her.

Main character in FF9, whatever his name was....

And Squall...fucking mopey emo kid.
Are we straying into "characters I don't like" or incompetence, because they're completely different things. "Incompetent Protagonists" is the thread title and the OP even describes Ash, a truely incompetent protagonist because he's bad and fails at everything he's set out to do.

Zidane, (the main character in FF9) was possibly the /most/ competent main character. And even though Squall is mopy, he was far from incompetent either.

Both are extremely competent, Zidane is master theif, who is also very good at fighting, doesn't set any bad things off through the course of the story, always pushes forward, never screws up, the only time there's a lapse, is with the whole mind control thing on Terra, which is understandable.

Squall is an extremely talented fighter, generally an icon amongst his fellow students for his prowess, an inspiring leader, and has been trained since a child to be a soldier. He literally knows nothing else except how to be a soldier. And again, he doesn't cock up in the story.

Showing my age here, but when I hear "incompetent protagonist" the first thing that jumps to mind is Inspector Gadget. If it weren't for Penny and Brain he'd be dead in practically every episode.

I think, as Dragon Ball continued and the characters? battle powers kept escalating, I found Goku less endearingly naïve and more idiotically selfish. He seems to repeatedly allow planet-destroying villains to escape, just so he can have a shot at fighting them again, but he?s always forgiven because he?s fucking Goku. He?s not incompetent at fighting, but he sure is incompetent at protecting the world.

The first thing that came to mind was Terra, from Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep. Sucker gets played by every single villain he meets. Every. Single. One. Does he ever think "Gee, last guy who talked to me like this ended up really ended up screwing me over... Maybe I shouldn't take his word for it." Nope. He'll happily go along with them.

Also, every protagonist from White Knight Cronicles. They were so frickin' stupid, it was painful to watch. They chase the villain all over the continent to save the princess, and when they find said villain, they just stand around and stare angrily at them, doing two major things to prevent the villain from getting away: Jack, and shit. And this happens at least thrice.
