I never got the whole roommate thing seems a bit weird, But anyway you could try telling him to stop, and if that does not work slap him in the back of the head every time he shouts, he won't have the guts to stab you.

Or inform who ever is in charge of these kinda things that he frequently carries a large knife around and keeps you up all night while he sharpens his knife and whispers about killing the unbelievers, im sure that would get him him moved out pretty quickly.

1. Make sure your roomie isn't an asshole. If he's not, then:
A. Convince him to not speak when you're sleeping. MW2 does not require a LOT of coordination, so the guy can probably go without voice input and still win matches, unless he only does it to vent gamer rage, in which case:
B. Convince him to either not yell, or if that isnt possible, stuff a rag into his mouth when he screams. No, really. I do this; it seems dumb but it helps both the stress and the noise level.

2. If your roomie refuses to cooperate, and you can't change rooms:
A. get earplugs. goo ones, so they conform to the shape of your ear and don't contort it while you sleep so you wake up with earaches.
B. sleep outside the dorm! who says you need THAT bed anyway? it's a college, there's probably a good couch somewhere.

Here's another thought: How good are YOU at MW2? You could try to train him, make him better. The better he is, the less he'll get angry when he loses.

I love you.
Thanks.

But I'd like to point out that this is no exaggeration. When he starts one of these rants the room gets really cold; and about 3 minutes later the religious person on our floor arives at the door, looking like he's ready to perform an exorcism.
from experience i'd say that the first thing you ought to do is talk to him about it. Make sure that you make it clear to him that he can't talk loudly while you're trying to sleep. If he ignores you, then I'd request a roommate transfer ASAP if possible.

Here's some solutions:

1) Hide his headset.

2) Hide his Xbox.

3) Talk to him when he's playing and tell him that you need to sleep to reduce stress. If he gets aggressive over it, show him your doctor's note, and tell him that from 10:30 to 6:30 it is quiet time. Do NOT try to cuss him out over this; just politely talk to him about it.

4) Talk to your RA about the situation (if you have one). He might be able to talk to your roommate if you are unable to do so.

5) Give your roommate laryngitis.

6) Buy a pair of earplugs.

7) Or find an alternate way to reduce stress. Do something that you find relaxing enough to make your mind wander away from whatever is stressing you out: drawing, sculpting, playing the accordion, whatever. Get a stress ball. Go for a jog. Pretend you are petting a very fluffy kitty.

8) If that all fails, try to get your roommate expelled from housing for carrying a weapon. Ruin his college career for sleep and your well-being.
RA seems like the best step. He's constantly swearing and carried around a huge knife. You're afraid to confront him about lack of sleep. Your RA can probably get you a changed room under those circumstances

I suggest just talking to him about it. Also if he ever puts his knife down one day and your too afraid to confront him, just hide it when given the chance. Also if the walls between rooms aren't too thick ask if others near your room also have a problem with the profanities and these people could help you get him moved to a different room.

I thought that this was an activision thread!
in all seriousness, I had a similar problem with a cousin of mine; he stayed over for about a month because he just came to england and was looking for a job, but thats not the point; I let him use my pc, and he did, but everyday and until 1am, I couldnt sleep a wink(Yes he was playing MW2 and headsets, but he shouted swearwords as well), so I know how it feels.

Just get some ear muffs or listen to calming songs while going to sleep.

your best bet at this point is to move off campus from my perspective

I know your pain, my roommate in college was exactly the same, he had zero to no volume control on his voice, and he would be up screaming at his TV from midnight til 4:30, almost every night. Add to it that our rooms were adjacent and the walls were thin enough to hear each other breathe, and I didn't get a whole lot of slepp either.

Wish I had a solution, but all I did was move out when the lease was up.
