Sorry, I accidently hit enter.
games are fictional
A man can always dream.
How do we know we aren't fictional? Come to think of it, how would video game worlds feel if they knew they were in a fake world? Even in WWII games, this year is 2008 and soon to be 2009. They're stuck in the past. Sorry, what was I talking about?

The humble master of the crying freezer would like to point out that despite being quoted four times, noone's yet corrected "grammer" to "grammar". Thanks for your time.

Finally, someone noticed. I was busy trying to figure out if it was a European variant or something.

I think you have the wrong definition of "inconsistant". You're describing realism, not inconsistencies. Either way, who cares about realism? Name to me one game that has every single thing about it that's real.

Too late, we're here now. Come along lads - someone has somehow misspelled the term "what". How can this be?

Plus, grammar is spelled with an 'a'.

Gaming is bound to be full of inconsistencies - after all, it is gaming. As in, fictional. What did you expect? Mario : Now with Havok!
Funny story- Super Smash Bros. Brawl uses Havok.

I know what you mean though, I'm currently playing through Super Mario World and it bugs me how you can drop from huge distances and land, and be unscathed yet one touch from an enemy and you take damage. I don't get it. That's a pretty tame example, there are some blatant inconsistencies out there.

It doesen't stick in sequels though, although most games are self contained and I always reset after a death but it still happens.

Right? Yeah, that's not inconsistency. Using my uber awesome FF7 self-quote as reference here, at no point are you supposed to be under the impression that the towns are actually that small, they're merely icons on an interactive world/map that allow you to go from the 'world' into the 'town' and know that you did it. This isn't inconsistency, it's a mechanic.
Or is it an inconsistency cleverly disguised as a game mechanic!?

Wow. That's him told. Video games sure are serious business.

The biggest inconsistency in a JRPG is Sephiroth's Supernova. It's a long ass spell that, as I recall, causes the fucking sun to swallow the earth and everything on it. It does about 2000 damage.

Wait, something about fiction not needing to be logical?

Blasphemy! That's, "fiction needs not be realistic." All fiction should be logical. Otherwise we couldn't relate to it at all. For example, what about a world where flanking your enemy is a bad idea? Or what if being hurt actually made you healthier? All fiction needs logic. It's the realism that can be logically eschewed.

Of course, I like realism, too, but, that's an opinion.

As for inconsistencies in games... I don't know. I can't think of anything that doesn't make sense for the game.

Oh wait! Battlefield 2. All NPCs will always switch to their knives if they get close to an enemy. I don't really see how that fits with the concept of the game. (And it pisses me the hell off, because when a person gets a knife out, they're usually right next to you, so unless you want to be in a knife-duel, you have to walk backward and try to shoot them (and they constantly try to be to the side of your view, so you can't shoot them).)

I'm pretty sure it just makes your characters go critical (yellow HP). I remember Yuffie had like 600HP and it missed her.

Repeatedly....

He cast it like 6 times before I killed him the first time I played the game. I had none of the awesome materia. No mime, no KotR, no lvl4 limits. I was shocked when Cloud got his first lvl 4 break in that end "battle" with Sephiroth. The whole end-game was over an hour for me. I made sure to fix that on my second play through.

One amusing inconsistency I had was in Guild Wars. I was constantly skipping missions and just doing random exploring when I talked to an NPC and they said a main character NPC had died. Oops, spoilers. It was funny because I could go play the mission then and finally see him die.

Yeah, it always bugs me something fierce when games aren't internally consistent, as when you have dramatic character deaths in games where bringing people back from the dead is a common occurrence. Clashes between the "physics" of the game and the plot are the most horrible and noticeable to me. You can write any physics you want, but don't go and suddenly decide they don't apply for your stupidly contrived plot.
