X3 Terran Conflict.

I could post an image, but then the entire game could be counted as one continuous vista.

Oh wait, theres videos for that.

In War for Cybertron, Autobot campaign. You're in an elevator as Optimus/Ratchet/Bumblebee, and you see a vista of Iacon City. All golden, shining, but on fire and under attack. Gorgeous.

At the start of Mass Effect 2 were you step out into the exposed part of the Normandy. Seeing space, the explosions and the planet above was awesome. It was very well done and beautiful.

Halo takes the cake for me. The following are from Reach.

All are in-game. Not bad for a generic FPS, eh?

Get bigger versions of the screenshots from these [http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=31199] two [http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=31126] news posts. Just scroll down, and click the images to be taken to a place to download them.
I see your epic vistas and raise you The Long Night of Solace.

For scale, it is estimated to be around 27 km in length.

Flotsam from The Witcher 2. Just... wow. The rays of sunlight, the shadows cast by gigantic trees, the window-lighting effects. Seriously, I just keep wandering around looking at the place :p

Get your ass to the Shiverpeaks and take some screens from Beacon's Perch. Gorgeous view.

Pretty much the entire Witcher 2.

Check out my album of screens from just the first 1/5 or so of the game.

Here's some excerpts:

Also, the latest Fallout games:

Dive Rock in Oblivion. It was in the far northeast corner of the map, unmarked IIRC. There's also an invisible 500hp monster guarding it. But if you manage to make it to the peak, you get one of the best views in gaming IMHO. With increased draw distance you can even see the Imperial City, but even without that this video demonstrates it nicely:

Say what you like about World of Warcraft, it's gameplay or graphical quality (personally I think it's a boring and life-sapping game), it had some damn nice scenery and artistic direction.

And Mirror's Edge has easily some of my favourite urban vistas.

Oh wow there are a lot of games I can think of...

Fallout 3 and New Vegas are both amazing - considering it's a post-apocalyptic world...it's beautiful.
Guild Wars had many stunning shops. I captured a few of them but sadly that was on my old computer.
The Final Fantasy series - even the older ones - have some amazing sights. And fault FFXIII all you want, but some of the areas on that game, especially on Pulse, are stunning.
Hell even GTA: San Andreas had some fantastic views, notably Mount Chilliad, or in the desert.

I will have to say Crysis as well. But Guild Wars has some awesome vistas as well. Here's a vista I captured.

It's at the overlook in Grenditch Courthouse, a very empty place. I like it like that though. It's incredibly peaceful.

Even though there wasn't much detail, I still always thought that Tribes 2 had some great views.

There are many areas in the .Hack GU games that made me stop and stare. Like this one for instance.

and someone already mentioned Mass Effect 2's Illium.

personally, if i could pick a favorite developer when it comes entirely to creating beautiful vistas, i would have to choose Bungie. Halo's scenery has always been spectacular. i really hope they do the same thing with their next project. i heard a rumor that it may be a Steampunk-type universe, so that would definitely make for some interesting scenery.

IN FPS, the original Unreal game pioneered the whole 'beautiful outdoors' thing (the various gamemodes in UT2k4 had many beautiful maps too (some of the DM maps were claustrophobic though), and in UT Classic there was Facing Worlds and Hall of Giants.

Anyone who's played the Halo games (especially the classic Halo) would remember stunning moments like getting out of that pod in chapter 2 to be greeted by the most beautiful alien world in a game. Some of the MP maps like the classic Blood Gulch offered scenery porn too. I'm glad Bungie didn't go for the boring brown shooter look for Halo 3, like Epic Games did for their games.

That Crysis game looked like real life, but the Halo series yielded the most incredible and most vibrant gaming vistas in FPS history.

I liked Just Cause 2's map; Panau is amazing.
