How about Braid [http://store.steampowered.com/app/26800/]?
It has a demo which is always a bonus.

Also, it's not out yet on Steam (though it's on XBLA and PSN) but Limbo [http://store.steampowered.com/app/48000/] but will be in a little over a week. I played the demo on my PS3 and it seems to be pretty good, if a little jarring when the little guy gets killed in horrific ways.

Gotta go with Braid too. Best indie game I've played in ages.
But I suppose there are more gems out there.

Capsized [http://store.steampowered.com/app/95300/] is also nice.
Same but different (Flash and for free): Zombotron [http://armorgames.com/play/12000/zombotron].
Something VERY interesting is in the make here: Project Zomboid [http://projectzomboid.com/blog/] - Zombie Apocalypse Sandbox. It's like Minecraft in the way that you invest in the development. Currently it's not even alpha but the immersion and depth I got from playing the "pre-alpha test demo" ...TripleA titles struggle to match this.

Sanctum http://store.steampowered.com/app/91600/. It's a FPS Tower Defence game, the gameplay is unique as it's an interesting concept and it's quite well made, well worth checking out. However, I bought it during a Steam sale...

I read about that I think on the Control Alt Delete Website. He did a plug-in for them in one of his daily comments/blog I think. But from what Tim Buckley said about it, it sounded quit awsome.

Recettear if you enjoy the art style of anime and keeping up your store and going for adventures with you companions, but the game can be a bit hard from time to time just like last week, I was just casually playing it for the third time and what do I see, there was never a high price on anything that I tried to sell, everything was always on sale and I couldn't manage to pay the third weeks debt.

Best indie game on Steam, imho.
YES THIS, that and what sold it for me (In fact when i bought it, it was for this only reason) was that Anamanaguchi had Blackout City on it =D.

If you like RPG's see if the Breath of Dead and Cuthulu saves the world double pack is still 2.50

Blade Kitten isn't to bad, I didn't play it much yet but Hydro Phobia looks good and reminds me of a old point and click game I played a while back, Nimbus is a good rocket shooting game thing, Who's that flying is good now that my gamepad works for it, Zeit^2 is like a R-Type meets Sands of Time, Super Meat Boy is hard and fun :D, Beat Hazard (with the DLC) is one of my favorite steam games, Torchlight is a good Diablo Clone (and you don't have to click as much as yahtzee made it out to seem you can click and hold to move and attack), and Magicka is a great game for magic fans (not that card game mind you)

EDIT: THIS is for steam indies.

Jamestown. Imo its the best shmup on steam, plus it has a good difficulty curve, its imo the best intrduction into shmups that noobs can play as the devs has designed the game so that it gives gamers a taste of whats so good about Japanese styled shmups without throwing them into the deep end like other shmups. (It might be lacking online co-op but its still a fantastic game)

Start out in normal mode (very easy) and work your way up to legendary (normal) difficulty. Then move onto gauntlet mode and aim for the 1 Credit Clear, also the challenge mode is worth doing inbetween the main game modes. (Just dont play with a mouse FFS)

Beat Hazard Ultra, I fantastic way to listen to your music

Aquaria, A fantastic mix of Echo the dophin, Odin Shpere and Metroidvania.

Recettear, If you dont like the cutesy Japanese art, then try to get past it because there is a really fantasic video game underneath it. Try out the demo.

VVVVVV I played this a couple of weeks ago, really fun and addictive platformer (try to beat Vendi Vechi) MUST BUY!

Amnesia, A horror FPS done right

Magicka and Torchlight, good diablo clones

Serious Sam HD Gold edition, while not an indie if you like PC FPS games the series (both the new and old versions) are a must buy

Also, Trine, Bittrip series, Crayon Physics, Zeno Clash, Darwinia, ARES, Shatter, Zombie Driver, Shadowgrounds, Mr Robot, Bullet Candy, Everyday Shooter, Killing Floor, Arma 2.

Plus keep your eye out on Carpe Fulgur (Reccetear) and Rockin Andriod as their localisations will be coming to steam soon, the localisations are from the doujin scene and there are some really fantastic 2D games that most western gamers dont have a clue about, make sure you buy those.

NONE Steam indies, Cave story, Splunky, Noitu Love 2, Hydorah, Blue Wish Resurrection, I wanna be the guy, Vanguard Princess, Gun Girl 2, all games by Kento Cho, Witch-bot Meglilo
