Now, I know we get these music threads on a very regular basis, so if you're just going to yell about this being a repeat thread, do it somewhere else please. I get tired of that sort of person very easily, and my finger loves buttons and the colour red...

Anyway, this is a thread in two parts. I've recently really started getting into new music, mostly indie/alternative rock and folk. Not sure why I've had this sudden phase of listening to tons of new groups and artists, but I have. In particular, I'm suddenly really into Metric and Rose Elinor Dougall (formerly of The Pipettes), and somewhat getting into Warpaint, Two Door Cinema Club, and Broken Social Scene:

So, what I want to know is, what music have you guys recently heard that you couldn't stop listening to, that was totally new to you (new songs, new artists, whatever)? And what indie/alt rock/folk artists and bands would you recommend in this thread?

First some clarifications are in order: I am not by any stretch of the imagination an "indie lover". Nor would I ever wish to be described as such, even if my enjoyment of the (actually quite meaningless descriptor) 'indie' genre would make such a description an accurate one, thanks to the stigma attached to all the other people who really love indie. Let us just say that we do not see eye to eye, and leave that be.

Okay, with that out of the way, I do enjoy a fair bit of music that would be classified as indie, though I haven't really encountered any bands lately that I felt compelled to listen to ad infinitum. I do have a couple of names to toss out though!

Far Beyond Frail [http://www.farbeyondfrail.com/] - quite pleasant indie rock/pop outfit I encountered via Pandora some time back - the link goes to their website, where if you poke around you can find all their albums/EPs available for whatever price you care to name, which I thought was nice of them.

The Inner Banks [http://www.myspace.com/theinnerbanks] - a husband and wife + eclectic variety of collaborators. A track from their self-titled album showed up on my Pandora station one day, and I liked it enough to go look up the album it came from, only to discover there was literally no information about the band on Amazon and nobody had reviewed the album. I bought it anyway! The music itself (on that album at least) is mostly instrumental, with a very tranquil feel to it, albeit with more depth and complexity than I typically expect from an indie band.

This was one of the best indie tracks I heard in a while. Got me into researching the genre and led me to a lot more of the music and I thank it for showing me such a magical place :D

Mumford and sons, Frank Turner, and the little known Frightened Rabbit are three of my favourite acts ever. And my usual music tends to be the kind of stuff you hear in clubs. :)

I wouldn't class Frank Turner as Indie...i mean he supported Gaslight Anthem when i first saw him. More folk than anything else.
OT-I wouldnt call myself an Indie Lover but i do love a good indie song if you can have a bit of a dance to it :).

He stated that he was just beginning to get into Indie and Folk, hence why I picked frank and Mumford, I also saw him with Gaslight Anthem :). Although I think by the time the concert came around he was on par with Gaslight in terms of popularity!

Oh yeah, these guys are good too, I got into them the same way I did Metric and Broken Social Scene (so anyone from this forum can probably guess from those three bands how I got into them... :p).

Well, I was already into indie and folk, have been for a few years (since I first heard the soundtrack to Garden State and started reading NME Magazine...). Absolutely love Mumford and Sons, not heard of Frank Turner though, so I'll have to give him a listen sometime :).

He's my favourite lyricist ever. Truly outstanding story telling in his music.

Also don't forget to listen to frightened rabbit! They need more fame than they're getting at the moment. Really underrated band, although they did open for snow patrol at Hampden Park.
