I am personally open to all kinds of music. It mostly depends on the sonic imprint of the band, and the overall sound.

I like a balance between chaos and harmony. I don't enjoy poppy, mainstream music, but I don't want my music to be unintelligible mud.

Classical music is music.
Jazz is music.
Rock is music.
Metal is music.
Everything beyond that requires talent is music.

Rhyming, talking about the same endless subject without justification, and the notion to only climb higher in society...is NOT music.

Call it an opinion of mine, which it is, however I believe there is greater justification to this than the average child these days now wishes to claim.

Edit - Don't get me wrong though, I love the fact that it exists. It keeps the idiots away from MY music. It's like a bright bug zapper.
I fully support this opinion.

To add to it, I hate it when people think they are "hardcore" when they listen to grindcore, metal, etc.

You like almost every band I like...I salute you...Anyway,tell your friends that they can fuck off if they don't want to listen, One thing that I like to tell my non metal friends is that it is the only music that I can listen to that isn't boring as shit, and that it actually takes talent to play. Headbangers FTW!

I would like to preface this post by saying that I am a musician. Have been studying the world of music seriously for the past ten years both as a Guitarist and Producer. I also have an intense interest in the musicology field and have been studying that particular facet for the past 2 years of my post-secondary education. I am not stating this to somehow boost my statements into some sort of intellectual superiority, but I felt it necessary before someone took me to task on the source of the following opinions.

In Rap music the ideal creator is not an instrumentalist, but rather a skilled producer. To take and sample pre-made beats to produce multifaceted and original compositions takes years of learning and experience. You don't just stick a mic up to the speaker grille hit record and hope you get luck. An advanced DJ/Producer must have an ear and mind for what makes quality music. Furthermore, please do not assume that because some one plays an instrument, their ideas are completely original and that their art is now elevated beyond a DJ.

Now, granted the music we hear on the radio is soulless garbage, but this applies to all genres that are presented in the top 40 fm format from Pop to Alternative. If a person took the time to look outside of the mainstream they would be rewarded with well thought out music that speaks to whatever they are looking for.

To the subject at hand, I also enjoy Industrial (Skinny Puppy, :wumpscut:, Front Line Assembly) and Metal (Suffocation, Ephel Duath, the Crown, Frantic Bleep).

On the topic of rap and music...

Talent is not the core of music. Sound is the core of music. I accept all forms of music as long as there is something, at least one thing interesting about it. I do not care even slightly about messages, emotional effect, talent, skill, or anything like that. Because when it comes down to it, I cannot dance/headbang/bob my head to any of the things I mentioned there. Why? They. Are. Not. The. Music. Judging music purely from that is like judging food purely off of the taste of its dipping sauce. I do not care that mainstream rap's lyrical content is crude or lewd. The beat feels good on my ears and the vocal delivery has an interesting rhythm and tone. I don't care that Slipknot is popular with teenage angry boys and they scream alot. It sounds interesting when they do it! So I will headbang to it. If a boyband makes an awesome song, I will dance to it. It's that simple. I wish there were more people like me in the respect that they don't obsessively hold their cups of tea at an obscenely high level and spit on everything that doesn't taste like it. It bothers me alot. It seems every time people mention music, someone is always going "RAP SUCKS" "I HATE SCREAMING MUSIC" "EMO SUCKS" "NEW METALLICA SUCKS" every single time. And it's endless.

It is not easy work to make a good rap song. A rap song that consists of repeating the name of a dance move repeatedly isn't easy either. Ask Soulja Boy on the topic of his new album. He would know. It's gotta be catchy.

I've grown to appreciate tons of music because I learned to ask myself "Do I love/hate this because of how it sounds or how it makes me feel?" Maybe others should try that too. Because even though it makes people look smart and cool when they go "MAINSTREAM = SUCK I H8 RADIO", there are gems everywhere. Even in cultures and class levels that aren't yours.

When it comes to Industrial, I listen to it in short bursts. Usually Nine Inch Nails (Year Zero especially) or Skinny Puppy.

Good point, many people (including myself) fall into the trap of overthinking things.

Hmmm... A couple of those I'm right in between. I might need to haggle with my boss for days off soon. >_>;;

Thanks!

EDIT- I had no fucking idea KMFDM still toured! True, in a different continent, but still worth knowing.

Throbbing Gristle and Skinny Puppy are great Industrial Bands. None of the stuff you listed is realy industrial though.

This music is not strange to like but i myself am proud of the fact not many people i know listen to the same music as me.

Most industrial musicians or industrial music collectors tend to get pretty agitated about what is or isn't "industrial". Most especially seek to distance themselves and their beloved genre from anything to do with Marilyn Manson and also for many, Nine Inch Nails.
that's because Manson isn't industrial and NiN is becoming less so

ppl get picky because ppl label things wrong, such as try telling a car guy the Challenger is a Ford car and see what happens, for some reason they are kinda picky about what models are made by what companies

I like the response to this thread, and it's true that while i prefer this genre of music, i don't despise those who don't. If a certain type of music doesn't appeal to someone then no amount of nagging is going to change their opinions.

R&B and Rap is useless though. I could never get into that. And like somebody (i forget who) said that Nine inch nails is becoming less industrial it's true. A lot of bands find a sound that works then try and modify it and make it better but end up losing a lot of fans who liked the original.

My music tastes lie in the likes of Marilyn Manson, KoRn, System of a Down, Slipknot, Rob Zombie, Manowar and others along these lines, but when i mention this to my friends they all recoil in pain at the mention of such music. They complain it hurts their ears and they are incapable of listening to this type of music without suffering spontaneous combustion of the eardrums. I can't stand the boy/girl bands their so called music, singing about boyfriends and whatnot. In my opinion Scuzz is now the only decent music channel remaining.

Are there any fellow moshers within the ranks of the escapist or am i alone in the world?
None of those are Industrial though, or even closely related to industrial for that matter, and this is coming from someone whose music collection is approximately 1/3 Industrial...

Meh, I'll listen to anything, the more extreme the better, sometimes.
Marilyn Manson is industrial/alternative rock.
No he isn't. He's Rock.

I'm gunna assume you're at most 13.

There are no good music chanelles, afew decent radio stations, that's about it. Last FM is probaly your best bet if you wanna try and discover new music you'll like.

Oh, and if your friends don't listen to System of a Down, that's their own loss.

I have some CombiChrist and I know of VNV Nation.

I listen to everything, I personally don't care about what everyone else likes or dislikes. My iTunes is full of stuff I want to listen too.
How it should be.
