My biggest issue with Dragonforce is that they are lousy live.

Just goes to show how much they edit with computers on their CD's...

and two, you have "fans" who only know Through the Fire and the Flames, which really ticks me off too.
If it makes you feel better, this is the only one of their songs I own, and I had it BEFORE GH3 came out. (I have it through pure luck and an insane cousin.)
True, however I doubt you would call yourself a true FAN based one one song, right?

I don't like Dragonforce at all. Me and some buddies borrowed one of my brother's Dragonforce CD's (I can't remember which one, I think it might have been their first album) and tried to listen to it from start to finish, and at some point I thought that I was just listening to one long song, and I got a headache listening to them. In short, I couldn't get through one album because about half way through we got so bored of listening to them that I switched CD's and we listened to "Boo hoo" by Voltaire. Each to their own, everyone has differing musical tastes but Dragonforce are not among mine.

Because everybody always brags about them like they are the representation of THE FASTEST PLAYING EVAH and power metal, but they are not, they are fucking poor and unoriginal, and just because they put solos and very fast leads every 10 seconds doesn't make their music any more awesome, in fact it just makes it more obnoxious.

IMO their only good and original contribution to power metal was their debut album, everything else after that is just rubbish.

I mean, sure, their song lyrics are ridiculous, but it's fantasy (D&D) metal, and for that they're brilliant. Also, the guitar solos are epic.
Seconded. I never knew them, I don't do music, but had a few of their songs handed to me by a friend. To understand just what is important, this friend of mine doesn't like more then 'cutesy' music and hence this style is faaar from his norm. Yet he is a fantasy geek as well and this bands music has a strange way of resonance with us. So personally, I liked the band. Cause yes, I am a fantasy geek also.

PS: It wasn't till long after GH3 that I found out it was the same band. Again, not someone who listens to much music so I was a bit dense there. Never listened to them enough to get the 'blending together' effect others have described though I don't find it to hard to picture given what I have heard of their stuff.

I like what I hear, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go to their concert, no.

The trick to enjoying Dragonforce albums is to put them on shuffle with a bunch of other albums from different genres - usually I'm the type to advocate listening to albums from start to finish to preserve the musicians "artistic vision" and all that rot, but there is really no reason to do that with Dragonforce.

This is part of the reason that, while I certainly wouldn't describe myself as a fan, I still enjoy them well enough - I don't hear their music often enough to become overexposed to it.

GTFO. It's watered down power metal at best, go listen to Iced Earth, Dragonland or Therion.
Oh come on. I listened to a lot of power metal back in the day. Please, elitism isn't good in music, I had to learn that lesson here. It's less heavy than what you consider to be the norm, but it meets all the criteria.
The beauty of being into power metal is that you are expected to be elitist since its fans are usually the elitist metal head type such as myself.

Despite being obviously fast-forwarded in the studios, the songs are entertaining to listen to and just sound okay. Hear them live, and it's hilariously awful.

the best thing about dragonforce is their album titled Ultra Beatdown. I just love that name. It's obviously not the best album title ever but it stuck with me for ages.

In related news-best song name STFUppercut by The Blackout

The band is complete crap. I just can't stand all of that show-off junk.

Personally when it comes to metal, I'm a big fan of the old stuff. I used to like DF, but it really DOES get boring after a while. As you might see, my favorite metal band is Iron Maiden. Mainly because they can not only make fast songs that sound good, but they are great at slow metal as well. Good examples of a mix of slow and fast from them are "Children of the Damned," "No Prayer For The Dying," "Dream of Mirrors," "Revelations," and some of their stuff like that. Good slow period songs include "Coming Home," "Blood Brothers," "Wasted Years (which is not slow but it's not too fast)," and so on. Slow metal just has some great quality to it, I don't know what it is, it just sounds awesome. That's just my thoughts though, you can like what you like and I can like what I like and neither of us can do jack $h!t about it.

Also, I lost the game.

Because most of their songs sound exactly the same, and aren't very interesting to listen to. Just because you can play fast doesn't mean that your music is good; as a guitarist myself I respect their musicianship and technical ability (although I have heard that they are terrible live) but I don't like their music. Granted, I haven't heard too much of them, or of power metal in general, but I view bands like Symphony X as being far better at interesting songwriting than Dragonforce, which doesn't have much to justify it's song lengths besides ridiculous videogamey-sounding solos.

But if you like them, OP, more power to you. I won't say that you have horrible taste in music for liking Dragonforce or anything. I just think there's much, much better stuff out there, and if you like Dragonforce then I'm sure some people on here can point you in the way of some good power metal.

Wow, I didn't know the hate existed.

I started listening to them around the release of their first album, which was crazy awesome and really hard to acquire. Then Sonic Firestorm came out and I was like "Oh my... that is insane... and it's rapidly taking me to nostalgia land". Fury of the Storm was incredible and I spent many hours listening and learning it.

I guess I haven't been paying much attention after Rampage was released. Weird.

People hate Dragonforce because of all the hype, every 16 year-old thinking that fast solos automatically equate to good music, and proclaiming to Herman to be an unrivaled God of guitar ability, even though hundreds of other guitarists out there that can pull off even the fastest and most complicated solos in their discography in their sleep.

Also, the drumming is boring and generic, the lyrics are terrible, they're disgraceful live, and they have little to no musical evolution and even less creativity. If your defining musical trait as a band are your nonsensical wank-heavy guitar solos, you are in VERY deep trouble.

EDIT: I just noticed I posted in this thread months ago.

I've started to take guitar lessons and practice quite a bit on the instrument itself. One of my favorite guitarists/references is dragonforce's herman li.
I checked out the band, started listening to their songs and watching their live performances @ utube and other websites streaming and my issue is, why the hating?
I personally think they are a great band, cool musics and that "superfast guitar playing" factor.
Dunno why they are so hated and trashtalked tbh so.. why?
Keep up the guitar playing - just holding a guitar properly makes your sexier, and being able to play, sexier still.

As for Dragonforce, I like them. Not exactly deep or interesting, but they're fun. They make great battle music for a D&D game. ^^

They do have a couple good songs, there best being "Soldiers of the Wasteland", but when you get down to it:

1: Their lyrics are uninspired and feel lackluster at best
2: Their singer isn't the best.
3: The Drummer has no creativity (Though I don't blame him for that)
4: THE SONGS ARE ALL WAY TO FREAKIN' FAST!
5: All the songs seem to similar to one another.

Also, aren't there like 3 guitarists in that band? Cause I was thinking that's how they could do those crazy long/fast solo's: 3 Guitarists switching on parts of the Solo so that it flows correctly.
