It's yet another game I've wanted to try but not necessarily buy like Until Dawn, and once again it'll be a PS+ game next month.

I was a pretty big fan of the first one, and while I also liked the second, it felt like too much of a rehash. I liked the Festival of Blood DLC more.

For those who've played Second Son, how did you like it? If you've played the other games was it as good/worse/better?

I've always thought the core gameplay was fun enough to carry me through at least one play through.

I liked it. I never played any of the earlier ones. The gameplay changes completely as you gain different powers which provides good variety. This is one of those games with an open world that makes me wonder why they bothered, since there isn't that much to find as you explore. Skyrim was my first open world, and almost every non-Bethesda open world since has been severely lacking. The writing and dialogue in the early game are so bad I considered quitting but both got more bearable as you progress. I HATED the commentary of the citizens of Seattle, but YMMV.

All in all, there really no reason not to play. As I said, the gameplay gets better as you progress.

Disclaimer: I only played a little bit of the first game since I never owned a PS3 though what I did play I enjoyed a lot.

That being said, Second Son is one of my favorite games on the PS4. Some of the complaints were legit (such as the main character being a bit of a smarmy dick and the story was a bit formulaic) but it was the first PS4 game I played that I was really blown away by graphically. I think it's a gorgeous game and I really enjoyed playing it.

I feel like if you liked the first one, Second Son won't disappoint.

One of my favorite things to do in the earlier ones was climb the highest points and just power dive to the ground. If you move your face closer or further from the screen it almost gives a vertigo effect haha.

If nothing else these games are fun to mess around in and wreak havoc with the powers. Also of note would be that the silky smooth traversal mechanics imo have only recently been surpassed by Horizon: Zero Dawn.

I only ever played like five hours of the first one and I never really played the second one. Second Son is more interesting to me, because I think it has a much better movement system. The combat system is also pretty fun, but I think there is a legitimate complaint that most of the different powers aren't actually all that different. Also, this isn't really a knock on the game, but the best thing about it to me is hands-down the soundtrack.

One of my favorite video game soundtracks.

I would say that Second Son is a fine game with some fun game mechanics, such as smoking through vents to climb buildings or running really fast and leaving neon trails everywhere. But after the emotional gut punches pulled in Infamous 1+2, the story doesn't really match up which is a shame. Plus the game is pretty easy and really short. But if you care, its an easy platinum.

Second Son's a fun playthrough.

Variety is a little lacking. Outside of a few sparse boss fights, you spend the entire time fighting the Concrete power dudes. Which was an odd step back from the previous series titles that tended to have 3-5 enemy conduit types. The concrete guys do have a few more variants then older games did, but it feels a little samey nonetheless.

This pops up in Delsin's powers too. All 3 powers have a ground pound, all 3 have a melee, all 3 have a rocket-attack, aside from the GFX, all 3 have the same Ultimate move. Smoke probably gets the best of it, having a more unique feel to its mobility, and projectiles.

It's pretty good. Never played the first, only a bit of the second. But as an original superhero sandbox story, it's worth the time. I don't know what the 'bad' playthrough is like because I just try and make decisions that are sensical at the time, but the charcters, story and overall mood are all quite enjoyable. If it's free, you got no excuse not to. ;)

It's not very good.

It lacks the power creativity of the previous games. They changed it from electricty to smoke, since electro stuff was ofcourse Cole's thing, but it shows how well that power was implemented into the gameworld's structure. There was electricity everywhere due to it being a city so there were loads of points to draw power from. In Second Son smoke just isn't as well distributed and doesn't have as easily recognizible points to draw from.

The powercable traveral is also gone now, because no electro powers. In the previous games these were placed perfectly to allow you to string them together, and it felt great jumping from cable to cable and using the speed boost to jump/glide to the next one. In Second Son you have chimneys that boost you up in the air, followed by you having to spam the soar button to reach the next one. It just lacks the sense of speed and it's pretty boring.

The variety of powers is dramatically reduced. You no longer have telekinesis to hurl cars and dumpsters around, no ice launch to rocket yourself up into the air and arcoss rooftops. It's now just a combination of regular shootbangs, grenades, and a big overdrive explosion power. You get three other different powers next to smoke, but they might as well be palette swaps.

Enemy variety also sucks. It's militia dudes and hooligans, that's it. And they're all just regular humanoids -- there's no big monster fights or giant brawls of monsters vs. humans vs. choppers.

Overall pretty mediocre and disappointing. Stick to the first two games.
