Don't go for FPS games. For people who grew up with games they're simple, but for people who didn't they're terrible. My dad used to play shooters when I was younger (Wolfenstein, Blake Stone, Rise of the Triad, etc), but when I tried playing Halo with him once he spent two minutes trying to walk around with the camera aimed at the floor before giving up because he couldn't get the controls down.

Go with something like a puzzle game or a simple platformer.

Different for PC gaming. I played uncountable amount of FPS games before I played Halo 2 on the Xbox, I was looking at the floor and sky, and couldn't aim for the life of me, of course it only took about 10 minutes before I destroyed my friend at his own game, but I have about 13 years of gaming experience on him. The mouse is your friend.

The problem with Halo is that he is under the impression that all games are for the most part mindless shooty blow-upey games, or child's toys.
I have to show him games can be mature and tell a good story, as well as be fun.

Edit: Another bit of context/clarification: He expressed interest in the premise of Silent Hill 2, as well as the idea that in Silent Hill 2, killing is incidental to the game.
then definitly show him some rpg's, idk if you should go jrpg or wrpg with that one tho, depends on his tastes, definitly try a kotor on him tho because its not that hard especially on easy and the storytelling in it is great along with some decent strategy (if you play on a harder mode)

Tetris for sure. Then it'd really come down to what system he'd want to play or has access to. My breakdown would be something like this:

360 - Fable 2
ps3 - Heavy Rain
wii - New Super Mario Bros
nds - Cooking Mama or Rhythm Heaven
psp - God of War

For most of my choices I favored controls over quality of the game mainly because I think it's better that he learns the controls before getting into something really good. This is why I chose Fable 2 over BioShock because I think it'd be easier for him to grasp the controls in Fable2.

However, given what you are looking for him to play, I think I'd recommend Heavy Rain every time. Its got a great personal story (emphasis on personal, it'll feel like his own game), super easy controls, and good graphics.

Well, I wouldn't start him off with a FPS or an RPG. Those can scare off new gamers.

Instead, try a classic. Mario, anyone?

If you're making the argument that games aren't all shooty-killy, I'd definitely avoid FPSs (and also agree that they can be difficult for a new gamer). I'm assuming since you're even having this discussion, that he is at least somewhat familiar with games so my suggestions are a little off the wall.

First, an oldschool PC game called Black & White. It is one of Peter Molyneux's older franchises and is basically a God Game where you train a giant pet to be either good or evil. The gameplay is pretty good, but not awesome though and it might be hard to find.

Second, Thief 1 or 2. They involve some killing, but it can definitely be avoided in most situations. The games leak atmosphere out of every pore and the stories are simple, but not stupid. Problems are that it is first person and can be violent though.

Lastly, World of Warcraft. Combine the problems from the Thief games and x100, but as a Pally or Druid, he should be able to solo pretty well, enjoy the story of the questlines, and get addicted to loot (worked on my Dad). Like I said though, lots of mindless killing, which might be a turnoff.

I suggested all PC games because they have a lower barrier to entry than console games since most people are already familar with mouse and keyboard controls, which might be better than a cold start with a controller.

Good luck!

Something turn based, you don't want him dying all the time because he can't remember controls and getting turned of forever.

For FPS, here's a few tips:

When teaching him how to control, tell him right analog stick is for upper torso, left is for lower. Someone on this site said that but I don't remember who. For PC it would be easier.

Start with Co-op so you can help him out. Maybe with regenerating health so he doesn't get too punished for any mistake.
