In Fire Emblem (2003), there's one mission where you have to rout the enemy while defending a certain unit. The awesome twist is that said unit you need to defend will literally rout the map himself given the time. You have to race to rescue him before he claims all the exp. and dropped weapons, especially because a certain side quest is only available if you receive at least a certain amount of exp. in that mission.
I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing...
Good that the unit will do the work for you, bad that he'll take all the goodies and you need to race him before he does. It basically turns an escort mission into a timed mission... I guess that's Fire Emblem for you, inventing new ways to frustrate people.
It's a timed escort mission :)

If you're unlucky said unit will get himself killed (he's only NIGH-invincible).
In some ways the mission more of a skill gauger. If you're not that great, you'll still get to kill some of the units, but you'll miss out on some stuff. If you play more aggressively, you can rescue the "escort" unit and claim all the shit for yourself.

Also, said escort unit and his awesome wife join you two chapters later, if it's any reconciliation.

On the topic of Fire Emblem, that also makes me think of another mechanic I don't care for. Permadeath.
It's especially bad in Fire Emblem because the characters aren't just pawns, they have children and back story. It's also sometimes a requirement to use a certain character to recruit another character, and if you went and got that person killed well...

Good news! The latest two Fire Emblem games (one of which is having a 2013 international release and the other just had a complete fan translation released like 5 days ago) both have a "casual mode" which removes the permadeath feature. Casual mode can be played on all difficulties, too. removing some of the sting from the horror of Lunatic mode and the jp-only difficulties.

Worst Level Theme: Modern. Seriously, it's fucking boring looking at generic brown and grey structures all the time. Mirror's Edge proved that not only can you make an awesome first person game with really bright colours, but that you can use a very minimal colour palette to brilliant effect. I ask whatever assheads are making CoD these days to take note.

Worst Mission: Anything with an NPC whose actions have an impact on the outcome.

Aren't you the sworn enemies of the Brovengers as well?? o_O' ... -_-

OT: Ehm...

Theme - probably caves... I'm blind enough as it is without needing shitty lighting to make it worse... and with the terrain textures as they are, finding collectibles means I spend a shitlong time in 'em.

Level - I'll probably be labelled a pussy for this, but any level in which it's purely 'kill everyone in sight apart from your allies'. I'm colour blind as well, so the number of times the level's restarted because I TK'd is ridiculous... and guess how long it took for me to play CoD:BO?! -_-

When we (The Mighty Brovengers) can be bothered to fight them. :p

OT - Escort Missions.
Fuck that noise. I'm fine with failing because I fucked up, but not when an NPC is being retarded.

I think it has something to do with buildings being easier to mass model than organic things, also buildings are just boring, *looks out window* yep, boring. Unless it's some game that takes place in a city known for it's awesomeness (like Venice). As for custom color palette, didn't you know, brown is the "realistic" and hip thing to do these days?

Although I never understood what's so realistic about brown filters, it's no more realistic than vivid color.

[sub][sub][sub]filthy Injustice league...[/sub][/sub][/sub]

Most hated level theme is definitely water/snow. It's the best way to make your level as boring as humanly possible for me >.>
Wandering around the northern end of skyrim is one of the most dull experiences I've had in a game.

As for level type, same as everyone else. Either timed/escort. Double points if your level has both. Triple points if it's also a water/snow level. The horror! D:

Vile villans, the sworn enemy of the Brovengers. They think they have the upper hand, but soon our glorious lead Daysatr Clarion will lead the assault that will crush the Injustice League once and for all!

You can't crush us, we're like cockroaches, the tiny ones, that are REALLY hard to get rid of...

The permadeath aspect to fire emblem to me is its greatest appeal. There's actual CONSEQUENCES. And when you think about it how much sense does it make for a group of 20 armed soldiers not having ONE single fatality while the enemy has 100% in every single battle they fight in? It's as boring as watching power rangers was for me when I was a kid. Why bother when you already know the outcome? power rangers kill monster, solve a petty life problem. Every episode. No thanks for every game being like that! I'm going to buy a 3ds simply because fire emblem is actually coming over to us, and you can bet I am keeping permadeath on. I love that unpredictable feeling!

Worst Level Theme: Labyrinths, specially when there is no map. It kills the pace of the game in its tracks...
Worst Mission Type: Automatic failable missions, which means any mission where restrictions apply that are not part of the core gameplay, don't have tools to do it properly and if the restrictions are not met its an automatic fail. Examples include escort missions, protect missions, and forced stealth missions

I know that it's not realistic to have no fatalities in a war scenario. I just find myself getting too attached to the Fire Emblem characters because they're actually characters instead of "nameless paladin 1". When I go into battles, I'll do everything I can to keep all my characters alive, to the point in which if a character dies when the battle is almost over (and I've been playing that map for a half hour or longer), I'll restart the save file from the beginning of the battle and lose all that progress. After a few times of doing this, I get very frustrated.

Labyrinths are more tolerable in games that have "make as you move" maps. Even if the game doesn't provide me with a map, if I can map it myself, I don't mind as much, then it's just exploring, with limited resources, and depending on the game, the potential to die at any moment.
